Email Unsubscribes - numbers

I happened upon a report by Marlon Sanders the other day (one of my "originals" who got me into this medium over 10 years ago) and I he had screenshots from one of his aweber accounts right there for all to see.

He had numbers like 1000 subscribers and 500 unsubscribed.

I thought this would be very helpful for people because they like to see a benchmark that they can compare themselves with.

I'll bet many people who have lower unsubscribe percentages get worried and think they are being too pushy so they back off and I'll bet sales suffer because of it.

So take that to heart, for every 2 people who opted in, 1 unsubscribed.

What r your numbers?

My unsubscribes are low, practically zero, and I intend to keep them that way, though I will admit i do not do heavy promotion. But in a bricks and mortar business would you consider it a success if you drove away every other lead instead of keeping them as a customer? I don't know the answer to that, but it doesn't seem like the right way to treat people...

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

My unsubscribes are also very low - about 2-4%. What I do anyway is if they don't make any purchses after 6 months, they automatically get dumped. Quote often these may be useless or abandoned emails.

Wow, those numbers actually seem pretty high.

Mine are lower like in the 2% to 5% range.

It's always harder and more expensive to get a customer than to keep a customer.

So why not try to hold on to each subscriber like they're your best friends?

Unsubscribe rates are going to vary depending on the marketer and just because an unsubscribe rate seems a bit high, it doesn't mean that you are doing something wrong.

A good marketer will put a lot of his own personality into his emails. That personality may rub some people the wrong way, prompting them to unsubscribe, but that personality might make others laugh or just be a breath of fresh air to some.

Let's say that Howard Stern started IMing and put up a generic looking squeezepage that didn't really show his true personality. Without a doubt, he would eventually offend a lot of people with his emails and have a large unsubscribe rate. But, on the other hand, Howard would most likely have a core group of loyal people that would pine for his next mailing and buy whatever he tells them to buy.

Don't get owned by your unsubscribe rates. You will never please all of the people all of the time.

It isn't a number I'm too concerned about unless it is excessive, I know the Prospect Lifetime Value (PLV) of subscribers in the markets I'm in.

The most important thing with lists is bringing new people on board on a regular basis.

Either to maintain, or grow your lists.

Do nothing and your list(s) will be finished eventually, you've got to keep adding new people.

I get less than 1% of unsubscribe per mailing and I mail at least 3 times a week....

As long as my subscription rate is higher than my unsubscribe rate, I am happy.
