WSO idea - WP tutorial

Hey Warriors. It would really be nice if a warrior with wordpress expertise could make a how to use wordpress video that takes a non-techie person and teaches them how to build a non blog looking website from step one to finish.

Now, before you guys start sending me "go look at you tube" post, i have done that and for the life of me i could not find one video where a wordpress guru shows you the exact steps to where a fifth grader could understand.

I have come across many newbies that can't figure wordpress out as far as changing css or php codes that will:

1. remove sidebar
2. remove comments
3.remove everything that makes it look like a blog

I think it would be great and a good WSO if someone can take ONE theme say twenty ten theme and start from step one and don't finish until you have a five page website that looks like a site and not a blog. I know I would pay for it.

Too many newbies have to settle on a very easy to edit blogger blog to do marketing with. As you know you have no control over the blogger blog. So if any of you expert wordpress warriors would like to do this i would be your first customer. If you know of a video tutorial that teaches this step by step (like a fifth grader) then please point me into the right direction. Just remember, a lot of people in this forum are regular folks that don't have the basic techie knowledge to build a site from scratch. Please keep that in mind. Thanks

All those things can usually be done very easily within WP with most themes.

If you create a page then select a different layput to the default you'll usually be able to select one that doesn't have a sidebar.

    Then turn off comments .

Not sure why you would want a blog not to look like a blog... It's like asking for steak that looks like chicken instead of ordering chicken

Find a theme that does what you want rather than trying to mess with one that doesn't

I may be mistaken, and haven't seen them myself, but I think Istvan Horvath has a range of products, including video, maybe including a WSO, that covers all that and more. You certainly won't easily find a more authoritative expert on "Wordpress", either.

As much as I know, there are several FREE plug-ins that can remove those things you want to remove.

All you have to do is to sit down and take a close look at how WordPress and its plug-ins work.

Istvan has answered every single WP question I've had for him with the exception of one...

To be fair, it WAS a kind of odd one.

      Here's his WF page too:

The problem with what you are asking is: The visual appearance of your site is dependent on the theme you are using.

Coverting a theme that was designed for a typical blog layout into something new requires more work that some css here and php there.

I can make wordpress look like anything and do just about anything but I'm not tweeking the twentyten theme to reach my goals. Every site I build is built from scratch with a goal in mind.

Also, a non blog looking website, is very vague. A lot of wordpress sites look nothing like blogs but they also don't look anything alike either. Do you have an example of what you are looking for?

In short, you're way oversimplifying the work involved to design a solid wordpress theme, especially if that theme breaks away from the typical blog layout. Go take a look over at themeforest, the top designers spend a month or more on each theme.

      Hey Jason

What I am looking for is a theme that could easily be edited to look more like a regular site instead of a blog. I guess the twenty-ten was not a good example. I just want my sites to not have that blogging type feel with multiple post on one page or the sidebar.

I want to be able to add an article to each page with affiliate links or adsense if I choose. I have read so much about how simple wordpress is but I have not had that experience. I just want to put up simple websites with great content so I can start make money. Then I can have someone build me a better site. Until then it's either find some good wordpress tutorials or use blogger which is easy as hell to make look good. Thanks

I suspect you will have to buy a theme in order to do that easily. And buying something like Thesis or Headway or Flexsqueeze which allows you to click a few buttons or add some custom css code.

That will probably be easier than coding one from scratch. I think learning how to do it wouild be a skill which could help you earn some money doing that for other people, but if what you want is a site today, you might do well to get a premium theme.

If you mean that you want your wordpress site to not look like it is a blog by only having one post per page, then your problem can easily be solved no matter what theme you are using.

Go go your Admin Panel ->Settings -> Reading. Set "Blog pages show at most" to 1. That way every post you make will be on its own page.

Everything in the sidebar can be moved, removed or added to with the Widgets. Go to Appearance ->Widgets. Play around with them and refresh your site every time you do to see what the changes are to get used to which widget does what.

If there is anything else, let me know.

You'll definitely want a premium theme like Flexx or Thesis, which allows you to make changes to the layout within the WP control panel instead of having to meddle with the CSS and HTML.

The requirements you've stated above are quite easily met by any number of premium themes. You definitely want something that has configurable sidebars, so that you can switch column formats at will.

Well, the appearance of your wordpress site is based on the theme you are using so hit up some of the bigger theme sellers.

Themeforest, woo themes, elegant themes, studiopress. They all sell themes that don't fit the typical blog layout and might have something that suits your needs. Themeforest is probably the cheapest option if you are concerned about price. They typically run about $35.

There are also many free themes available. You often get what you pay for but that doesn't mean their aren't good free WP themes available. There are several threads here on the topic to help you get started. Check out the free themes available at smashingmagazine.com

I'll send you a WP salespage theme if you want it.

This is a straight forward one page template that you can use to create simple websites and sales pages. It looks nice and uses efficient HTML and CSS coding.
I have the rights so you're free to use it. PM or email me.

It seems to me that what you want to create is a static type of site. Basically it is just on setting up the pages and picking the right theme that you will need for it not to look like a blog.

I agree that you are going about things the wrong way. There are so many themes out there that already do what you need; many can be picked up relatively cheap. Why bother taking a standard theme and modifying it all day long until it fits your needs? Just go and get a theme that does exactly what you want straight out of the box.

Here are a few resources for Wordpress themes:

    - ThemeForest
    - WooThemes

This website is using Twenty-Ten theme, who would guess if that site uses Wordpress Twenty Ten theme? and it looks great like a website, follow this tutorial how to use wordpress for creating website.

The best is installing wordpress on your PC or Mac locally and play around with it to get familiar with wordpress, before starting it online.

    Good luck!

    hastings,

where is the problem? This is as simple as removing all "blog like" widgets from your theme...and using a static front page. And yes, you can do that from within WP. And of course appearance might also depend on the theme.

Any theme can be modified to look something different than the "blog-like" layout... however:
    - you need a solid understanding of XHTML and CSS (+some WP template tags)
    - not sure it's worth to do it with every theme

Don't get misled by the easiness of installing and publishing with WP! Modifying a theme requires as much design knowledge as any other website's layout. People tend to forget this...

There is no way you can take a "non-techie" person and instruct him/her with a video to become an XHTML/CSS expert designer after watching a half hour video.

As for using a complicated theme that lets you do all the modifications from within the admin/options page... it's the same as with plugins: the more you have the heavier your blog gets. If a theme has 98 different options that you can mess with - all those will be stored in your database and when displaying any and every page that will send a lot of queries to the database.

And they never tell you that when they sell you a theme that "lets you customize everything from within the admin panel"!

    Just my $0.02 (CAD)

p.s. No, my videos linked above are NOT for teaching you anything about design and layout.

Actually, according to Paypal (and their banking partner, Wells Fargo?) the loonie is worth more than the USD... so lately I get less Canadian dollars when I withdraw USD money to my bank account.

Of course, this is just one of the anomalies of PP: at my Canadian bank I have - legally - a Canadian $ account + a US $ account, among others.
As so many others I also set my prices in USD, however I can NOT withdraw directly USDollars to my USD account... because I am Canadian, says Paypal Canada. Which means the only way to get my money is to let them convert the USD amount into CAD amount (exchange rate at their discretion!) and wait until it arrives to my CAD account.
(And if tormorrow my wife wants to go shopping to US... then I will have to buy US dollars with my recently converted Canadian dollars :rolleyes

Absolutely, and the thing is that if you go mucking around in your html or css code without knowing what you are doing and you screw up 1 little thing, it could totally mess up your blog AND unless you have the necessary debugging skills you probably won't be able to figure out what went wrong because a lot of times the place where it looks broken is not where the actual bad code is.

It's happened to quite a few clients of mine and trying to get a designer to fix it is costly.

Better off just to find a theme that looks like what you want in the first place IMHO.
