Warriors, Go and Get a Real Job!

I just need to get this out of my head. Every family reunion ends pretty much the same. They keep questioning my internet marketing activities and I have to defend my source of income.

You will think that after so much time, they will stop doubting about what you do for a living... But, it is not happening.

I could understand their point of view when I was struggling to make an income online. However, my situation today is very different. I am making a very nice income from my online activities and I do not need a 9 to 5 job anymore.

I am tired of having to answer this question: When are you getting a real job? Damn, I do not need it. I already have one. Having an online business does not count?

I really want to know if you, Warriors, have been in the position of having to defend your Internet activities?

If so, what do you do about it? How do you convince those around you?

Maybe it's just better to keep going and ignore them...

lol I get the same thing:
"when are you going to stop playing those video games and get a real job"

I must admit this is time consuming but I make my own hours and the opportunity to make large sums is there

Yes, I know. Isn't it beautiful to work your own hours, making something you like and making money on top of that?

But, still family can be so frustrating sometimes.

The only way to get people to shut up about it is to make so money that it is obvious your doing something, and once you do that get into an online business that people can halfway wrap there heads around like selling physical goods. Tell people all of your money comes from that business even if it is only a small percent. Most people will never understand "marketing".

I have a Bachelors Degree in marketing and I remember when I told some of my family I was majoring in marketing they just didn't understand and that is real world marketing. Most people absolutely can't understand internet marketing.

Two things you need to become legit in peoples eyes:

        1. Make a ton of money (a significant amount more than them) Buying a much nicer house then them will do the trick. This is how most average people measure stuff. Nice house, nice cars, makes you legit. I promise if you buy some huge nice house people will quit asking when you are going to get a real job and they will start looking at you like a genius. I CAN GUARANTEE YOU THIS 100%.

        2. Do something they understand

Yea true, you COULD do all of that...or you could be a lot smarter with your money. Don't go blowing your hard earned cash just to prove you have worth, if you are making millions, sure..go ahead and buy a ridiculous house with a ferrari in the driveway....if you arent (which ill just assume), save that s#!%...use it for things like vacations, things that people who have money can afford as a luxury, but dont go crazy...that'll just make you broke and then everyone will have been right...be smart people

People who have no ambition and can't wrap their tunnel visioned minds around how to make something like this work will never stop giving you crap. I honestly feel SO bad for people who pretend that they are happy slaving away for someone else in a job that (whether they admit it or not) they hate...I'd rather be making 40k/year from something of my own creation than working for someone else for 100k+/year ...I'll stick with the IM

I would answer - because a "REAL" job doing what someone else tells me to does not make me $xxxx a week!

I used to get this question all the time.

Slowly but surely I started buying all my toys while they couldn't. My house was filling up with toys costing many thousands of dollars.

When asked I would simply answer with "if I had a real job like yours I wouldn't have been able to afford all these toys you see" and the next sentence I would question them with something like "when are you going to give up your day job and make some real money so you could buy that camera you're holding in your hands of mine".

Another good comeback I've used "I'm going on holidays Monday for the next two or three weeks. I'll think about you slaving away while I'm up at the cottage watching the world go by".

Now I just get asked how business is going.

While I understand your point, I'm inclined to believe that, in many cases, online work is not considered a "real job" for a few potentially good reasons. For example, I'm sure there are many IMers who feel that their online enterprises are solid. However, when you look closer, do those same IMers carry adequate health/medical/life insurance, etc? Are they factoring in taxes they must pay on what they make?

Questions like these are sometimes not considered by some segment of IMers. On the surface, an IMer making $4000 per month sounds impressive. However, when you factor in losing 30% to the govt and another $300 or so per month toward medical insurance, another $100 in other "deductions", and additional costs related to the business, $4000 no longer seems so impressive.

I think these are the issues others are thinking about when they ask an IMer when he is going to get a "real job".

I don't think those with an employee mentality have the
slightest clue about any of those issues. If you're losing
30% of your income to taxes you need a better tax advisor.

You don't have a job and an online business does not count as a job. Why would you ever want to have a job again, when your business makes you the money that you want.

It is ever so much better to be an entrepreneur and be in charge of your own life.

I don't get asked these questions very often anymore, but I have fielded my fair share of them. The last time I was asked that question I answered it something like this.

"Why don't you get a real job?"
I opened my mouth as if to say something, and then paused. I waited for a few seconds while they stared. There was about 5 people waiting for my answer. I turned to the person that asked the question and looked them in the eyes and said, "It would be impossible for me to take that kind of a paycut at my age." The best part was that they all just sat there thinking about it for a couple of minutes.

I don't have a huge house or super nice cars or anything. Me and my wife love to travel. We have taken our kids all over the place. In fact we are headed for Disneyland in 2 weeks for a week of r and r. We are going on a cruise in November, and a road trip that will last a month or longer this summer. We are talking about going to London for a year while I do a graduate program.

I think some of the other guys have answered this pretty well. You get fewer questions the more successful you become.

I am not making money right now since I just started but you can say something like

----what do you do as a "job"?
me: I have an online business and work with companies like clickbank.(if they do not know what that is) or you can say. I have an online business and work with other companies online (and you can make the companies sound big to make it sound more impressive).

------how come you arent going out tonight?
me: I have to watch my business webinar online, please dont bother me

-------You dont even know what a job is, all you do is stay on the computer all day long.
me: you dont even know how to work with online companies. All you do is work for you boss

wow there's some hot air and ego wafting around this thread

look, family members will rarely understand what it is you actually do, but to put things in perspective, why not state that you are an online sales agent, who creates opportunities for himself by means of writing and promoting other people's goods. it's a fairly straightforward and self explanatory answer.

don't fall into the ego trap of "oh i roll out of bed at 11am and then sit around all day playing with toys". you won't have any friends to even question you before long!

I have tried this approach. I have even show them some of my sites and try to explain how it works... I think what bothers them is me working at home and without a regular schedule... It seems that if you don't take the car to go to the office at 7:30 AM, you are not working.

I don't see any. What I see in this thread is real world success via IM.

You're beginning to sound jealous actually, but whatever.

Anyway, it's not about having your family perceive that you "roll out of bed at 11am" or that you sit around playing with toys all day.

I actually get out of bed at 5:30am to go to the gym. I said I eat breakfast at 10am, not roll out of bed at 11am. And I didn't say I sit around playing with toys. I said I can afford my toys. I work very hard and I play hard too, when I can.

I once had the smallest house in my family. Now I have the largest. No, I don't own a mansion, but I do have a nice home with plenty of room. No fancy cars here. I used to be an auto mechanic years ago. I've seen and had my share of nice cars. Now to me they're all the same. My minivan gets me from point A to B reliably and that's all that matters to me.

When your family sees the toys and the lifestyle, believe me, it shuts them up.

Many times I've been in that position. Just ask them if they'd take a pay cut at their job, then tell them that you can no longer afford to work at a conventional job because it would mean a big pay cut for you.

Keep going. They're probably just jealous that they have to be subservient to someone else while you're sitting at home "playing on the computer."

I love when people ask me now, "So, what do you actually...do?" I still don't have a good way to explain it, so I usually just tell them that I own websites and make money off advertising, which most people seem to get. However, since I seem to be paying the bills, I have very few people who tell me to go get a real job! Glad I haven't really had to defend myself like the OP!

If people are really telling you to get a real job, you're probably describing your "business" as kinda fly-by-night. Nobody tells a guy that owns a web design business to "Go out and get a job".

But anyways, I always think its funny when people decide to start IM and then go out and tell everyone and their brother. Then they come here and complain that nobody is supportive. HELLO!!!! What do you expect people to say? Go out and make some money and then start talking.

When are you going to get a real job?
      Never

Why don't you have a real job?
      Don't want one - don't need one.

Laugh it off - the more you try to argue, the more defensive you seem. It's not necessary for others to agree with what you do - if you are supporting yourself and you are happy with your lifestyle.

I have never describe my online business in a way that seem a fly-by-night experiment. I am not the kind of marketer that goes for the easy money. First of all, I consider myself an entrepreneur, and I am building a solid business online. I work hard and I am making a very nice income online.

I am not a showy person who likes to go out there and tell everybody about what I am doing or not, and how much money I make.

Family is a different thing. They want to know what you do but they do not understand your activities. It is not about the money you make or how much you make.

The main point is that you want them to realize that an online business has many similarities to an offline business. That you are working without having to go to the office or without having a regular schedule.

Try to explain to your mother the whole thing when she has never use Internet or a computer to begin with.

I have not start this thread to complain. I have started this threat to discuss something that I think it is not so uncommon among people working online.

Read first what people is actually saying, and please do not assume that you know me because you do not.

    well,

If you own a home, drive a nice car and aren't struggling for money... they aren't going to ask those questions.

If you're living with mom, driving an 92 corolla and money is tight... they have a legitimate concern.

Nobody cares what you do as long as you are successful and more importantly, making money.

I'm not IM, but my former income streams were equally hard to explain and understand by those not in industry and got the "why don't you get a real job?" quite often.

Even after things really took off... nice home, nice car, not a financial worry in the world, I still got comments and questions on "a real job".

Then I officially retired and there was still disbelief questions and comments. Oddly enough most were from "concerned" family and close friends.

Some people just want to jam you into their perception of what someone at a particular age or stange in life should be doing. They won't even bother with a quick "well done" or even a "I'd also like to drink beer and play recreational sports on weekdays while not worrying about the bills. Can you show me how you did that?"

I figure, if you have something going that pays well and you're fortunate to love what you do, don't ever sacrifice just to make someone else more comfortable with their narrowmindedness. Because at a very high cost to you, that's all you'll be doing.

It's real easy...Don't go to the reunions if you feel hassled and if you must go, tell them to mind their own business if they are saying this to you!

You can also tell them that it must suck for them having to get up and go to work everyday...you knew how that was, but you now don't have to worry about that!

The point is, you don't have to defend anything to them. It's pretty simple.

I know how you feel. When I used to "work" I was the shop supervisor. I was leaving to go home on a Friday. I'm in the washroom getting my hands all washed up from grease when the owner comes in and says "oh, you're leaving?" to which I replied I already had 72 hours in that week and still planned to come back in Saturday. He looks at me and says "only 72 hours you lazy $*&#@".

It was at that moment I decided I had enough of "work" and I left shortly after. It was either that or sit in a cell for 25 years

Are you doing something illegal, immoral or unethical? If not, then it's none of their business what your business is.

If they are asking for the sake of making small talk, then no problem.

If they are asking so they can be judgmental, then don't answer them at all.

The "need" you feel to defend yourself comes from within. I have never felt the need to defend myself. I may offer a simple explanation, but not so I can defend what I do to earn a living.

in my case working at home is definitely different from working any where else. The best office and working place would be at home.

But in some cases the place that you work will change because of the type of work and the people around you. You enjoy hanging out with your friends and working together.

You have a point. Family wants to know what you're doing and how you do it but just don't understand.

And my mom... haha... I just set her up with a computer for the very first time last week. She would always come inside my studio and look at everything and wonder what I do with it. She never did quite get it.

Okay, I've played enough this afternoon. Now I have some work to do... or maybe I'll just go play with some toys now because I can.

If that doesn't get it. Try hosting the reunion pool side at your beach house. (The second option may require few more years of successful IMing.

I would have to expand this to any endeavor that people don't either understand or can't share with you....Whether it is an online or offline business or losing a lot of weight or spending time on a time-consuming hobby that you're passionate about, it's always best to keep it to yourself.

Of course, if people ask, answer them as honestly as you can but keep it as short as possible.

As soon as you throw it out in the open any endeavor that you are embarking on, 95% of the people will try and rain on your parade or slow your momentum because most people are not willing to go out of their comfort zone like you, so they want to bring you down to their level.

I made it a point this year to lose weight and yet I don't share it with anyone among my personal sphere (except with you guys..ha ha!) because people will always add their 2 cents on how to do it or how not to do it. I've done well because I know that all the results come from my efforts with no one weighing in or directing me....How stifling that would be!

My positive reinforcement comes from within. The ultimate goal of any endeavor is fulfillment, security or happiness so why let others weigh in on something that's personal to you.

I am tired of having to answer this question: When are you getting a real job?
I've only been asked that question a couple of times but . . .

When one of my relatives asked that question I said something like this:

"You work at the (bank, bar, hardware store, factory, etc.) correct? Well, asking me that question would be the same as you going to work tomorrow morning, walking into the owner's office and asking him/her when they were going to get a real job.

I formed my company in 2007. So, I'm the Chairman, President, CEO, Owner, or whatever I want to call myself. How is that different from being the owner of that company you work for?"

As others have said, much of your families questioning may spawn from a lack of understanding or confusion about what exactly it is you do - especially if they are hearing second or third hand from other family members who are equally ignorant/confused.

I had a similar problem when I tried explaining internet marketing and what I was getting into to my mother a few years back. I can't recall exactly what I said to make it finally click for her, though it had to do with a common link. I explained it in comparison to something she DID know and understood very well. If you are able to help them with that association, they will more than likely start to come to a better understanding of your situation. Then again I don't know your family, they could just be giving you a hard time because they secretly wish they were in the same boat as you, or for kicks, who knows.

On another note and to address some earlier comments in the thread, I don't think the idea of a "job" job is as evil and horrid as some have said... I have a 9-5 (more like 8-7 lately...) day job and bust my ass every day at it - however I love it. I'm young, and starting along the path to my ideal career, doing something I'm passionate about. Regardless as to how successful I am with my online ventures, this isn't something I would be able to accomplish or achieve without working for somebody, as an employee, doing the 9-5.

I've worked a number of other day/night jobs and although they weren't what I would call enjoyable - I learned some very important life lessons and gained experience which I value to this day. You learn through experience - not freedom.

    My 2 cents.

Trying to explain internet marketing to some people can be a hard task. Especially if they have no idea about marketing or the tasks you can do and accomplish working online.

You are right about making an association with something they know and can understand. I also think that it is the best way to go. For example, they get that by selling products as an affiliate you receive a commission if someone buys through your link. This is similar to working as a sales person for an offline business. They can make a connection.

There are other things, however, that they cannot fully understand. Maybe it is because they have never use this technology, and they have always had more traditional jobs. It can be also the fact that I am the only entrepreneur in the family, and this alone makes them nervous.

      Another factor is the following:
I consider my sites an asset. I can profit from them today and in the long term. I can also sell them and make money. But they do not perceive the value a digital asset has, or can have, the same way they perceive value in physical assets, like buying and selling cars or houses or whatever.

And for the job 9-5, I do not believe is such an horrible thing. You are making a good point here that could be use as a new thread. You can have a 9-5 job and enjoy it, and yes you gain experience in some cases. Sometimes it is necessary to have a job like this. But, there is this general (wrong) idea that job equals doing something you do not like. It has a negative connotation.

Defending yourself won't accomplish much. In fact, quite often it fuels the other person's fire, so to speak, and they'll keep pushing the issue.

Next time someone asks you that question, just calmy (and confidently) respond with something like, "I appreciate your concern, thank you." (Don't say it sarcastically - but say it with a tone of genuine appreciation, even if you're annoyed.) And just smile and move on to the next subject.

Once you firmly set those boundaries (ie, that this topic - your "internet job" - is not up for discussion or debate) then they'll stop asking. But if you take the bait, it will continue.

If they're genuinely interested in what you do, then go ahead and talk about what you do. But if they're asking that question, that's not their motive.

      You are so right!
I was in a similar situation once. Even though my tax form showed that I was making more than enough money to pay for the loan I was asking for, the bank manager said something like "I know you can pay it now, but the nature of your job cannot guarantee that you will be able to pay it next year".
My conclusion: If you are out of the comfort-zone people around you get nervous.

That sounds odd. I've bought three houses in the last 5 years. I haven't had a "regular job" for 12 years. If you've got good credit and proof of income it shouldn't be a problem.

If you got people, family or not, asking you questions like that, you are obviously doing something either terribly right financially in your own life, or they are doing something terribly wrong in their own life

They obviously envy you. I have been know for making wise remarks, but then again I don't get approached the way you have by my family.

They may not understand it but when I help them make money also I am a genius in their eyes.

How many people have they came in contact with that can sit down to a computer and make money come out month after month after month.

    1 person.....ME

In their eyes I'm a genius. I don't consider myself one though. I just say I don't give up easy. They have and hold a job because they didn't give up when looking for a job, and they obviously haven't given up working on that job.

It makes them money. What I do makes me money. So when it comes to convincing there is no need to.

No need to explain anything either. You work for someone to make money and I work for someone to make money. That someone happens to be me

    End of discussion.

I was able to quit my offline job about 1.5 yrs ago. I earn about 3-4 times the amount I did back then and work maybe 10 hours a week on my SEO business. I find that many of my friends admire me and say mostly positive things about it. However, sometimes I get this attitude like my job is "easy" and I have no worries because I have an online job. "At least YOU can work at home, you've got it made". So, my life is perfect because I work online. Or I didn't earn it, it just "happened". Oh man I earned this job baby!

Well, I will admit that it's very sweet to outsource 95% of my work and earn 75% of the money. Yep, that's coo. I truly do appreciate the Internet and what it has allowed me to do. But, well, there are still stress factors and there are down times and while most jobs offline today are very insecure, sometimes it's scary to know that at any moment I could lose my clients due to "their" having money issues etc...

We all live on the same planet with the same worries. Stress does not leave us no matter what we do. We all work hard to get where we are. I spent over 10 years to develop the skills to be able to get paid 75% of what I make today. I'm not spoiled, I'm enjoying the fruits of my laybor. I've been scammed over $5,000 and I've probably paid well over 20k to learn what I know.

I think it was good you started this thread. It's good to express our frustrations with others who understand us and appreciate what we do. For those that don't appreciate it, you'll need to either tell them off, or figure out a way to cope. Perhaps remind yourself that they are missing out on one of the best ways to make money available today. They are the ones who need pitty, not you.

Wishing you and all of us Warriors more great success,

This could be another reason why some people question our job. They might think that being all day long in front of the computer (at home) doing something they do not understand is like being playing.

I get that a lot too and there are many people I have talked to recently who get it also. I just interviewed a bunch of professional women who work online full-time. Even they still get the question! People who do not have an entrepreneurial mindset just cannot see the huge businesses that are being built online. My Dad still calls me once a week and asks if I am looking for a job. I don't know how he thinks I pay my mortgage and other bills. He thinks the Internet stuff has to be a scam, I guess.....

I still have a so called "real job" but I have more truble explaining why I want to invest money in coaching and jv manager and launch managers. But when I do that there afther I will be able to hit it big and then they won't ask anything anymore.

Any want to sponsor $4997? No just kidding I will make my own ends meet.

But I am looking forward to the day they will ask me when I get a real job.

This seem to be a norm for me as an entrepreneur.

Most people understand trade time for money, which I used to do that.

But I decide to stop it.

How I overcome this "Go and get a real job" suggestion?

I am lucky to have a supportive family who is willing to give me some time to work on my business.

I made a commitment to them and then I deliver the result.

Yes it is challenging and but no turning back

Affiliate marketing is a real job. In fact it's the most efficient job to have and you pretty much set your own salary(that is if you're experienced and dedicate a lot of time).

I am student and a lot of my friends also ask when are you going to get a real job? I simply answer - I probably make more money while I am sleeping than you do in your 8 hour work day.

    Misery loves company.

Keep doing what you're doing. Being able to make more than you need while doing something you enjoy is something most people will never experience. And most of them can't comprehend that it's possible.

Just try to be cordial in your responses. What they think has no real bearing on you unless you let it.

Wow, I feel so lucky to have a family that supports me. The only thing I get asked is whether I can fix their computer (most of the time) and how to buy and sell stuff online (once in a while).

As for my friends - they just think its cool that I can go on Facebook any time that I want to. lol Except for one who thinks that I'm a "lady of leisure". Hmm... one day, perhaps.

I have to laugh at family and friends that say "get a real job," when, with our economy, the way it is, there is no real jobs available.

Even if there are jobs out there, you could be let go at a moment's notice. I live in a state that is an "at will" employment state, and any company can release your for any reason. With the uncertainty of working for any corporation, you call that a "real job?"

I've been self employed since 1993 and would never go back to a "real job." Ever since I left the corporate world, I've never been sick, have little to no stress, more productive than ever, and truly enjoy my life.

And the best part is, when I apply myself more in self employment, there is no limit to how much income I can make

    Hey Wechito,

I have not had the privilege of generating any income online for now. I have told of my ambition to make a living online and get nothing but blank stares from my family. I talk about things that I have learned and they condescendingly look at me and say "Oh...that's awesome. So anyway...Are you gonna go back to school?"

If I were you, I'd just ask your family members (And whomever else bugs you about what you do) about themselves. People love to talk about themselves. That is their favorite subject. It will take the focus off of you. As far as what you are doing, be proud of yourself. You are doing something most people can't even fathom and you have found success. Who cares if they don't understand it.

You don't need to explain yourself to anyone. I wish I was in that position because I still have to work a crappy office job just to pay bills. Hopefully that will change in the next 3 months or so...

Ok I have to admit my online income doesn't suffice yet to live from it but I can say one thing: When I'm able to earn my own money with a legal job (which it is) and if I can pay my bills and live on my own I don't care what other people are saying about my job. I mean you are self employed and you are not dependent on anyone else. So I know it's hard when the own familiy critizes you but if this is really the job you want then stick to it. If they don't like you because for who you are then that's their problem; not yours.

Haha, so glad I found this thread.

I just went through this conversation with my Dad even though I make more than him. XD

I can see where he is coming from though because it is not every day some kid runs his own successful business from his computer. But then again look at Mark Zuckerberg. My dad is actually about to watch the Social Network so maybe that will give him the insight he needs to trust me on this. Lol

Most IMers work harder than the 9 to 5ers as a matter of fact. I've read about people on here working 14-16 hour days. LOL!
It's never truly freedom. To create your business, to maintain it and to expand it...it takes a lot of work...consistent work! But it can be enjoyable too when you see the benefits. And it does indeed beat working for a boss.

I remember a couple years back at an old design job when I created an entire T-Shirt line from scratch. I not only developed the concept/idea but I designed the graphics fully and put them on paper and handed them to the Boss along with the graphics print files on a CD. Zellers loved the designs and developed and sold the shirts to great success. Meanwhile, I continued making $18.65 an hour. LOL!
I've had my designs sold to Canada's Wonderland, HMV and countless other places. If the world was fair, I'd be a millionaire right now. LOL!!!

I wonder if they realize there would be no "real jobs" if everyone did what they suggest. Where do they think their "real jobs" come from? How many "real job" Microsoft employees would there be if Bill Gates had only gotten a "real job" instead?

I've simply learned a few things..

    1. There will be times when having a real job is tough
    2. There will be times when working for yourself is tough too
    3. Love people, just don't allow yourself to care what they might say or think about you. In other words, let their opinion be "their" opinion.
    4. Support their dreams, help them when you can
    5. The only "real" approval you'll ever need is your own
    6. Any time someone tries to bully you into thinking the way they think, keep doing what you are doing. Then do it more.

People don't ask me this question because I have a day job and most people don't know or care that I work IM. But, if I didn't have a day job and just worked IM and someone asked me why don't I get a day job, I would answer with this, "Anybody can work for someone else. It takes a lot more responsibility and dedication to work for yourself."

"I work my day job to provide insurance for my husband and I.

I work IM now so that when I retire I will have my business well established and making good money. My husband and I will be more free to live a life on our terms and schedule.

With more time and money, I will then be able to start helping the people I love to help themselves. When I am gone, they will have a legacy to fall back on. I have a problem just handing people money, but if I can show and help them along the way to help themselves, that gives me a great sense of pride and feeling of acomplishment. I also really want to help other people that are not just in my family to succeed. Being able to help others to me is the greatest acomplishment of all!
