Urgent question I need answering...

Hi guys,

I've got an affiliate mailout scheduled next week to a friend's list of 250k. I'm currently on the HostGator Baby Plan. I've worked out each page view from my site serves up about 161KB.

Will my hosting plan be able to cope with this or do I need to upgrade? I've been on Livechat with Hostgator for about 30 minutes and they couldn't or wouldn't give me any kind of straight answer.

Say I get a 20% click thru of 50,000 visitors is that gonna crash my server/site?

Any recommendations?

can't you do the mailout in 2 halves?

Yeah I guess so, I'm just not even sure if 25,000 visitors is too much. I'm not sure where the threshold is. Is it 20,000 visitors, 100,000 visitors? etc

    Any ideas?

i dont know for sure but i would not risk it - it probably would knock the server out.

i would split it in half and do it over 2 days

I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Does anybody have any direct experience with this?

I would talk to the support guys at HostGator. They would be able to tell you their tipping point better than anybody here could. The server won't crash, but they may shut you down for taking up too many resources on the box. Only they know what that point is and whether or not you will be ok.

Thanks E. I tried but couldn't get a straight answer. They just said that there were too many variables to be able to work out any limits. I can't understand why not, surely they could give some kind of ball park figure?

Best of luck with your Paypal case by the way!

Anybody else actually had a Hostgator hosted site crash on them due to visitor load?

I'm not with Hostgator, but I regularly broadcast to quite a few mailing lists. I have no problem as long as I throttle down the sendings over a period of time. Any good hosting will do as long as you can control the rate going out in the script settings itself.

Thanks Bernard, that's put my mind at ease...and thanks Matt, I'll get them to split the mail out in 2 parts.

    Thanks guys!

I'm also on the HostGator Baby Plan and last year I had an internal launch after building a targeted list with Adwords of about 60,000 subscribers. Never run into any problems what so ever with Hostgator.

Now regarding your friend's list of 250k. The 20 % CTR is for those subs clicking on the title of the email. That's indeed 50,000 people opening the message your JV will send out, but from those at most 40% will click thru to your site, so that comes down to about 20,000 visitors.

      Hope this helps,
      Dan.

Thanks Dan, that's really helpful and reassuring. I've just arranged for the mail out to be done in two halves as well, so I'm sure everything will be fine.

How do you know that the list will be responsive at all? Is it a similar market?

Given that I think that the clear message is "break it down", I think I would go a bit further and break it down, into, say 5 x 50k batches, and then I would be able to get open rate information, which I could then consider and possibly tweak the title if I considered that open rate could be improved. Then if server crashes with first one, you will know, won't you?

Not to be a smartie-pants but do you have any idea how much your mailer will pull? Have you worked out the metrics or is this the first drop? You may be getting yourself worked up for nothing (no offense).

I've no idea how much it'll pull. Could be great numbers, could be awful. This is my first mailing with him. I'm hoping that from a list of 250k, I'll get a half decent amount. My list is only 3,000 strong at the moment, so any amount will help!

Hey, you're worried about your server crashing because of too many visitors... the gurus sometimes 'crash' their server on purpose during big launches, so it looks like everyone is just runnnning for their product.

And you're here legitimately concerned. Go with the gurus and let it crash!

Just kidding... but as others said it should be fine, the baby plan can handle pretty well in my experience. You also have the option of upgrading your plan to something beefier if you think it would be that big of an issue.

Also, don't forget that no matter what amount of people open the e-mail and click through, it's not likely that they would all do it at the SAME time. It would naturally get dispersed because people check their e-mails all at different times, most are usually not sitting & waiting for a marketer to e-mail them so they can jump right on it (though sadly probably some are). So yes, you'll get that initial surge but it will cool down and steady out over the next few hours/days and even later sometimes.

Good luck with your mailing, hope you make millions.

Haha! Thanks man, I hope I make millions too. Then I can swoop back over to WF with my new exclusive WSO all about "How you can make a million on autopilot with just one email."

I'll promise to make it affordable...ya know around the $2,000 mark ;-)
