How do I get an avalanche of traffic?

I have a new site which is a bit slow getting going.

How do you build the momentum to get the sort of traffic I am after. Is it only a case of slowly does it? or is it actually possible to get droves of traffic in a short period of time?

It just seems that even if you have free sites, it's still a difficult job to even get people to look at them.

What do you think of Traffic Exchanges in getting traffic?

You could commit a major crime while wearing a t-shirt with your domain name on the front and back.

Actually, that idea sparked one that you could actually do. Pay someone however much it takes to get them to jump onto the field/court at a major sporting event wearing ONLY the t-shirt I mentioned above. That should get a pretty decent amount of traffic.

Creating an avalanche of quality traffic could be done with adwords or ppv. Free traffic will take awhile.

I think I will pass on this idea. But it's very creative. Thanks for your reply.

Well, if it is a free website, then just keep building back links, have good content, do some article marketing and press releases. Publishing great content will keep people coming back to you.

What are your goals? What do you want the traffic for? Building lists? AdSense? Affiliate links? Selling a product?

Depending upon what you are looking to achieve will likely have an impact on what type of advice you get.

It takes time. Try everything but WATCH OUT for any type of fast traffic scheme.

Traffic exchanges will typically get you lots of spam and very low-quality visitors.

There are no shortcuts, or at least none that will sustain high traffic levels over an extended period of time.

BTW, Google employs outside freelancers to surf the web and buy all kinds of traffic products, networks, etc. Google has been doing this for at least fours years now. So don't think you're going to fool them with some quickie lots-of-traffic product or service.

My goal is to get the traffic. It's all a numbers game I think. Once the traffic is there then I am hoping to generate sales from them.

I think you are off base here. My most profitable sites have often been the ones with the least amount of traffic.

When I was selling medical supplies, PPC traffic was extremely expensive and there was not a huge amount of people searching for my products, but those that did search were highly targeted and were there to buy.

On the other hand, I have had sites that generated more traffic than most people dream of, but converted horribly.

You are at the all too familiar point of "let's throw some spaghetti against the wall and see what sticks". That is a bad place to be.

        You should focus on focusing.

Pick one way that you want to make money online and stick to it. Research it as you go. When you master that, you can start diversifying.

You could focus on list building, product selling, or even marketing other people's products. Just pick a way, act on it, and keep at it.

        Focus on focusing!

Yes, I can see your point. Thanks for the input.

I have just been looking around for some good list building software. I think a list might be a good start too.

Had I started list building when I first started marketing online, my life would be much different. Don't set yourself up for mind torture years down the road. Start building a list the day you start marketing online.

I agree that traffic exchanges are basically garbage traffic. If you are looking for quick traffic I would go with Adswaps, solo ads, and PPC.

Ezine advertising could work for you as well.

Anyway, if you want low converting traffic that is not very quality or targeted, then go for the traffic exchanges. However, if you want good and targeted traffic you could use article marketing. Another way to go would be pay per click advertising.

Well, we I started on the Internet, I learnt how to dominate the search engines, it wasn't hard to do back then. My site Sydney Hotels Accommodation - Discount cheap Hotels in Sydney dominated, google, infoseek, hotbot, yahoo, dmoz, and a number of other engines for the keywords "Sydney hotels, accommodation".

Also I was in a totally different area of work. Marketing wasn't really all that important. I just created the sites and then the search engines bought me 400+ visitors a day. That was plenty to help me generate $1.5 million in turnover a year. I did that from 1993 until 2005 when I had a burn out from working 18 hours a day making bookings.

Now my site is lucky to generate $100 a month, because I just haven't done anything about getting it back up there in the search engines again.

Now I have to do things differently. I need to automate everything. I don't need another period of illness from working too hard on the net.

My advice would be to outsource the tasks that are taking up so much of your time. Nobody should would 18 hour days, that is just insane. You could probably outsource and get it down to 8 or less hours a day if you are willing to spend a little cash to have someone else do the work for you.

These kind of posts are very interesting to me.

I don't want avalanches of traffic to my web sites. I am happy with one or two visitors a day, provided they are highly qualified visitors who are looking to pay money for the solution to a problem.

Find out what your potential customer will be looking for through brainstorming and keyword research. Then tailor your content and backlinks around what they are looking for.

Lots of work, I never complain about the traffic I get, but I get your point. If you just started out, it can and will take some time to gain popularity.

What troubles me most is that newbies start up with SEO which is not a good idea. There are many traffic exchanges out there to start building up momentum in traffic. Maybe not the best targetted traffic but they still yield great results in large quantity.

I compiled a list of the 46 best Traffic exchanges among about 300. PM me if you want list.

If you write one really good, targeted article per day and send it out to the top 10 article directories - you'll quickly start getting some targeted traffic. Then, start capturing that traffic on your site and turning it into your list.

I personally don't like using squeeze pages, but I do use very obvious offer boxes with a nice little report or other listbait. If the market you are in has a need, and you are offering a free solution, you'll get signups.

Then, turn those signups into buyers by sending them great information with sales pitches sprinkled in. Just be sure to use those sales pitches like salt. A little goes a long way - if you find someone craving salty potato chips, you can increase the amount a bit. But, overdo it and your list will taste awful.

There are dozens of ways to get traffic, but the best one will depend on three things:

    * Where does your target market hang out?
    * How do they seek information?
    * What do you like to do?

If you hate the method you choose, you'll have trouble being consistent.

Make a fan page in facebook! Its where the people are nowadays. I dont think you should be missing up on this as this is where the avalanche of traffic is.

Oh, one more thing. You are capturing this traffic in a list, right? Cause it could really be something as simple as the fact that people are being careful with money right now. If you have the ever-vaunted list - you have a chance to catch them on the second, third, fourth email instead of counting on one shot from the CB hop.

Google adwords is a quick way to get loads of traffic for a specific time. Although for a long term, i believe you may utilize the following methods:

1- Article Marketing by posting in article directories
2- Blog Posting on different blogs sites
3- Blog Posting in different social networking sites such as facebook, myspace
4- Social bookmarking of your links
    5-Feed submission in RSS directories
    6- Video Marketing
    7- Web Directory submissions
    8- Forum posting
    9- Press release submission
    10- Posting Classified ads
    11- Blog commenting

This is definitely the way to go- especially if you don't have money to spend on advertising.

Getting a list is great, but how do you build a list if you have no traffic!?

Create article content using well-researched keywords and with your target audience in mind. Once you get your traffic with keywords, quality content will get them on your list.

It's all about value- create value for your audience.

It sounds like you are (or at least were at one time) pretty knowledgeable at SEO.

Why not just do that again to get your site ranking for well-researched KWs? If it takes too much of your time, outsource some of it.

Besides SEO, some of the more scalable ways to get traffic consistently streaming to your site include article marketing, video marketing and also social media. This will take time and effort to get things going, but the good thing is that all this can be pretty much outsourced later on down the road, if you wish.

You say it's slow to get going but have you sized up your competition? Are you competing against sites that may have been indexed for years? If so, you could be looking at a very long slog to get ranked highly. However, getting thousands of backlinks is pretty easy if you take a look at some of the links packages that people on this forum can offer.
