what % of traffic goes to serp 1 through 10?

I have searched but can't find a post that listed the percentage of traffic that will hit sites 1-10 on page one of serps. Does anyone know about this?

I thought it could be used to determine realistic traffic expectations.

Thanks in advance.

    Try looking on Marketing Sherpa.com.

I've got a memory that they did a study on this - if I remember correctly I think Position 1 got about 44% of the traffic. Position 2 was in the 20s....don't remember the rest.

      Here's some interesting stuff.

      I just searched "Google Heatmap"

That was fast you guys! Thank you Paul and Richard.

Kinda puts things in a realistic perspective doesn't it. My thought was to apply those percentages to the results of whatever traffic tool you might use.

It's odd that position 7 has the lowest % of traffic. All this time I thought 7 was a lucky number.

RB, I'm glad you asked that question because I came here tonight to see if anyone had updated stats on this.

    Thanks, Paul and Richard.

Follow up question: Anyone know the age of these numbers?

    Thanks!

Remember never to rank your site in position #7!

It's kind of like pulling numbers out of a hat isn't it?

Somewhere on page one is worth a little, but
slots one to three are the money slots. after that ... shrug. (have seen stats to support but can't put my fingers on them just now)

I don't know if I am an average surfer, but I very rarely go to the bottom of the page and even less llikey to page two.

It's sick how much of the percentage the top spot gets. It can either make you try harder to get it, or give up. Hopefully you keep trying.

Yes, that heatmap is a generalization, but remember it also depends on many other variables guys.

If the subject is a "research'ish" type of subject, then people are going to come back to Google and run down 1,2,3,4,5 etc.

If it's something that I type in once, click the first page and get what I want... no further action required, then positions 2-down are out of luck.

Obviously that's just one way to look at it and there are variables to the variables, but you know what I mean.
