Major Browsers To Make Permanent Cookie Opt-Out Much Easier

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the article that affiliate.com put out recently in which they state that:

"Google announced a new initiative called Keep My Opt-Outs which allows internet users to opt-out permanently from all ad tracking cookies. It is already available as a downloadable extension for Google's Chrome browser. All companies that participate in the Digital Advertising Alliance's self regulatory program (which includes the Interactive Advertising Bureau as well has other major industry groups) will work with Google's opt-out tool.

In the announcement, Google also said the company was working on making the Keep My Opt-Outs feature available for other browsers, as well as making the code available on an open-source basis to outside developers to help them identify bugs and enhance its capabilities.

What this means for online marketers is that Do-Not-Track isn't an issue that you can just ignore and expect to go away. If anything it has picked up momentum since December, with three of the biggest browsers already offering or planning to offer enhanced opt-out capabilities in the very near future."

I think too many people still really heavily rely on their cookies to just one-click-void-all-forever and it will be a while before there is any real regulation to any of it, and or course there will always be a way to still get-around it or serve cookies differently or _________ unexplored methods arise and or who knows maybe a new standard is eventually implemented to enable sales with less 'identifiable' tracking info being shared to please users privacy and the economy harmoniously.
Hey, you're ruining my plans for my "Death Of Affiliate Marketing" report.

How does it affect cookies that aren't used for ad tracking? Not all cookies are "bad."

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

OK. My understanding *so far* (I could be completely wrong) is that it automatically opts people out of all of the participating companies that are registered for each browser:

Opt Out From Online Behavioral Advertising By Participating Companies (BETA)

"Exercise Your Choice: You can now visit the beta version of the Program's Consumer Opt Out Page, which allows users to conveniently opt-out from online behavioral ads served by some or all of our participating companies."

Again, I'm still reading through it.

Honestly, this could have a pretty bad effect, especially short term. But I think the advertisers that heavily rely on referral traffic will figure out a way around this. If there is a will, someone will find a way when it comes to the internet.

      As anyone who's lived through prohibition knows...where there's a will there's a way.

Either way, it's another reason why not to rely on cookies and focus on getting visitors from point A to point B. Visit site, grab credit card, buy now. None of these I'll think about it shenanigans.
