Mobile Websites - Worth it?

Does it make sense to create a .mobi for our Hotel Client? Is it true that most Websites convert the .com/are easily viewable on vast majority of phones, iphones, I-Pads, etc.?

I would say that most websites look and function rather poorly on mobile phones, even smart phones with decent web browsers, because everything is still so small and difficult to navigate easily. Unless you're using something like wordpress that uses a mobile theme for mobile users or use separate system for a special mobile version of a website - a standard website is going to look pretty rough on any mobile device.

Does is make sense for your client? Considering the low cost to develop a basic mobile site they'd probably only need a couple of clients to book with them to make their money back and then some, I'd say so - but only your client can look at their numbers and say for sure.

.mobi isn't any different than a .com, .net, .org etc... they are just TLD extensions.

With that said, having a mobile friendly version of your site is a good thing.

It doesn't necessarily have to be on it's own domain. I have a nifty little plugin that detects mobile browsers and calls up a separate WP theme for those guys. Why double the work?

If you're using Wordpress, there is a plugin called WPMS Mobile Edition that will automatically convert your site.

It's free. I've used it, and I haven't had any probelms with it. Just make sure to double check your work after completion and you should be set.

The simpler the better for mobile sites...

Users don't have to remember your .mobi site. They only need to know your
main site, which can easily be set up to detect if someone is visiting on a mobile
phone and then automatically direct them to the mobile optimised version.

Users don't have to remember your .mobi site. They only need to know your
    main site,
They don't even have to know your site if you
    offer them a QR Code.
