Can you do video marketing if you are.....not attractive?

by ShayB
86 replies
I know, I know - my avatar pic makes me look like a hottie with the body of an Amazon. I know.

But I don't look so hot in video. And my accent is kindly described as a Southern drawl....or is it a twang?

Now, don't get me wrong - I can do the sexy-answer-the-phone voice for a while, but I am not sure if I can manage to do it for a whole video.

Hubby says my smile will make up for my accent. (He is from Kansas - no accent.)

So, can I still do video/You tube marketing? Or should I stick to other methods?

No way Shay! First of all, I'm sure you look fine on video. We usually see the worst in ourselves, especially in a video that we hope thousands of people view.

Second, just give good info. That's all you have to worry about. Seriously.

When you think about doing porn videos, you can worry about what you look like. Other than that, go for it! LOL

    Exactly!

Give good info and everything else will fall into place.

Remember, its the imperfections in all of us that make everything seem genuine. If I was watching something and it all just seemed too perfect id be LESS inclined to believe what I was hearing.

I'm from the midwest, no accent but been told I have a northern accent while visiting Florida WTF?

From my experience any accent foreign to me including "southern twang" is sex-ay!

The only way to know is by trying it. Make a few videos, create a YouTube channel and find out the response. It does not cost you any thing except your hardwork and time. But unless you do it, you will never know.

lol, Shay, you asked the question that's been bothering me for a while. I look okay in person but am *not* photogenic or videogenic. (I just made that word up), and so I worry about doing videos.

My accent isn't just "Southern" - it's a "Charlestonian" accent.

I guess you will all know what that is when the videos come out.

Shay, take a look at the Food Network and watch anything from Paula Deen. A Savannah gal with an accent as thick as the sauce in her mac and cheese, and she seems to have done alright for herself.

Without proper lighting and makeup, a lot of the pros on TV don't look so hot. Use good, natural light. And maybe take the makeup artist from your local news program to lunch for some pointers on professional on-camera paint and spackle...

I'm originally from Minnesota (you betcha), and spent 17 years living in Nebraska. I'd much rather hear a lady's southern drawl than a Jayhawk rasp. Even native midwesterners have accents, for sure, they're just not as distinct.

Oh Shayshay don't u worry, u can't be talkin bout yourself!

Everyone has an accent. Even ur hubby has an accent, but since ur American you can't tell but someone from another country could.

If you're worried about your accent, try to do a French accent lol. Just give yourself a French accent for your videos. And you look like you're always happy from your avatar. Anyway there is no rule you have to be some anorexic super model to make an IM video. And if you're so worried about that, you can use a puppet lol A puppet with a French accent. That would be funny.

I'd like to offer an alternative to video - at least to start - that worked for me - I used camtasia to produce powerpoint slides with just audio - that kept the visual aspect out of the way... once I mastered the voice and felt comfortable with what I sound like - then I moved on to presenting sexy ole me OK. so I'm just a bump on the log ... big deal... when I'm on stage I'm Winston Churhill... or James Belushi from "The Principal" as he's stolling through the halls with his chest out in the air strutting his stuff with a baseball bat... the point is, just visualize who you want to be... and you will be the star of the show delivering the most awsome content on the internet

To rephrase: is makeup considered more "professional"?
Shay, that's why I suggested taking a makeup artist that works in TV out to lunch. When they do their voodoo properly, when the bright lights come on, you look like you, only moreso.

For this type of video, shot in natural light, it may just be a layer of pancake to eliminate shine, or a little color to avoid washing out if you have pale skin. And surprisingly enough, the 'professional' preparation of applying the stuff can give your confidence a boost as well.

I'm looking forward to the premier...

I'm sure you'll do fine in the video, but if you're really that self-conscious couldn't you just ask your husband to star in the video, while you record? That would probably take a lot of the pressure off of you.

The whole was stunned by his research and publisher translated it in more then 100 languages. I think if you can go out there with something genuine , people will love you.

I got indian accent . Last year i posted a simple video , how to register on myspace. It was meant for my lil sister. After a year , i saw over 9 thousand of views and lots of good comments. You know indian accent sucks , lol . But people were happy with the solution. If you want you can search with keyword "how to register on myspace " and you will see my youtube video. Lol, if you have some confidence issue. Go watch that video right now.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned: your videos don't have to have people in them at all. They should be about the product, not you. Whether it makes sense to be in the video depends on what the product is- is it something that can be demonstrated?

You're actually very pretty and photogenic.

That aside, it's WHAT you say that truly counts.

More important than your appearance in video is if you
come across as sincere and likeable.

Aim the camera down at you a little so we aren't looking
up your nose... which is what happens with straight-on
    shots.

Remember to smile and make eye contact. Don't look away
because it makes you look shifty... like you are lying.

Try to get a level of warm enthusiasm.

People like to be entertained by video too. So work out a
delivery that is YOU focused from the start - tell your viewers
    how you will help them.

I've used a teleprompter software sometimes but I think it's
probably better to just practice your script a lot and get it
    down.

The title of this thread made me laugh! I just had to come see the responses.

I am a complete boring doofus and get tripped up on turning my thoughts into words on video... but I still use it a lot.

No matter what you look like, I think it really helps to build a positive relationship with your market/list/whatever.

I have never seen someone's video and thought "Damn he/she is ugly... I will not buy anything from them!" We just focus on the content that is being delivered and the character of the person delivering it.

    Eric has your answer.

A genuine, sincere, endearing, compelling and believable message is what matters.

However, image and dialect can have a negative impact if what you are trying to communicate is lost in perceptions of lack of qualification, experience, or knowledge.

Its all about the message, your ability to communicate and influence and how you present it. If you get that right looks and drawl won't matter.

    Shay,

My first video is the one in the free WSO below. After I recorded it and played it back, it seemed like there were way too many um's. I started to redo it, but decided that the message is way more important than the delivery.

I just did a simple screen capture with voice-over. I'm sure at some point I'll do a "real" video, but I understand how that can be a big step.

If you really worry about how you'll look and sound on video, just remember two words...

    Shay,

Your personality and your positive nature is infectious. Don't let self-consciousness get in your way.

I promise you, people will be enthralled by "getting to know YOU" through your videos.

The internet is largely faceless. When you connect with your audience via video, you break down an invisible wall that separates you from them.

Your customers begin to feel like they KNOW you better, even though they don't. They begin to feel like they can TRUST you more, because they know you.

I hope J-MO chimes in because, even though he's a good looking guy, his videos are very "real" and not polished productions at all and he KILLS it.

I think you are being too hard on yourself. Video marketing is so huge these days too so it really makes sens to take the plunge and create your first video. As mentioned previously YOU do not have to feature in the video physically and I am sure that once you are honest and deliver value in the video, nobody is going to care about your accent and some may even like it.

I have not done any videos where I feature either but have done many and I have a very distinctive accent as well. I speak English properly and am easy to understand so feel that these are key to any video. Good luck.

      There are two rules:
-Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder
      -You cant please everyone
So, just go ahead and make the video with confidence. Some people will think you are attractive, some people will think you are not. You shouldn't care as long as you are doing the right thing and giving something of value.

To be honest, i believe in the IM niche, no one cares about appearance, but its normal to be a little bit self-conscious

I think YOU should be in the videos. A good example of someone with that southern drawl and average looks is Paula Dean of the Cooking Channel.

She just does her thing and flat out doesn't care what people think. And it works.

When that is your attitude, it works wonders. I can talk to anyone, anyplace, and make a friend instantly. People will warm to you in your videos when you project this philosophy. They will pick up on it, be comfortable with you and want to know more about you and your message.

Just have fun with it. Be willing to laugh at yourself. If you make a mistake in the video, I'd consider leaving it in. Folks love bloopers, and it just makes you appear more human. (People like people who are like themselves.)

You know, I was considering doing some YouTube vids for recipies (cooking) while in drag. Put on a wig and a dress. Become "Rebecca Kenzington" (playing my own aunt)...an eccentric old "broad" that would be a cross between Julia Child and and an ex-beauty queen who is past her prime. (trust me, my looks aren't anything special, but it would get laughs and maybe I'd become an internet/YouTube sensation! )

My point is, don't be afraid to embarrass yourself...yea, we may be laughing at you, but with love in our hearts

My vote is Go For It! We want you!

Let us know when/where we can see your video masterpieces.

          Later,

Well, now that you got all their attention here, everyone will be watching and listening like a hawk. lol

Maybe do something like you on the video, with your husband or somebody else doing the voice, or vice versa. That sort of thing might come off bigger than just the usual video.

But really, I wouldn't worry about it. Like somebody already said, everybody sees themselves different, usually worse than others see them. Even other people see different. As a hobby, I write songs and record them. For a long time I was afraid to sing them. After I started posting them, many people actually liked the singing. Surprise! lol And I got all kinds of different opinions on who I sound like.

I do not normally wear makeup. (See avatar pic. :rolleyes

Better to look the way I usually do, or put some paint on the barn so I don't scare small children that might see the video?

      Hi babe!

I think that when you are trying to brand yourself, you take what you have, put a magnifier and go out there.

Do you have an accent? make it stronger!

you look like a sweet mom, the crazy aunty, the trusted neighbor, a hot chick? ok, dress it up completely.

Find the angle from where you are going to communicate, and use the main characteristics as your anchor. Then build from there.

It has to feel right and you have to have fun. To have fun, the building of a character where you are laughing of yourself first, makes all the difference.

Form there you communicate and make sure the message goes through... because you are comfortable in your skin.

Make up... I would use it. But it is up to you... depends on the character.

I love accents...so I would listen to you forever (being from UK). A lot of the time I am quite surprised how people talk after only seeing their picture.

Also I don't usually care what someone looks like...as long as they sound intelligent and don't say "like" every sentence they can

Shay - who's to decide what is "attractive" and what is not?
... these are all notions that people make up for themselves and they don't really count for anything.

Also, I couldn't care less on how the person looks if that person is giving out value...

    Eric's got it right:
"Regular looking people, that can display genuine kindness and honesty, will be able to sell as good as anyone else."

Part of effective marketing is making people say, "If he/she can do it, I CAN TOO!" List your most positive qualities, then work to enhance those as you communicate.

    I'm no pro, but...

No makeup is better than bad makeup.

Example: Who are you more likely to make a negative comment on. Someone who wears no makeup or someone who looks like an Oompa Loompa?

If you can apply it and still look natural, then go ahead.

    Hey Shay,

Play to your strengths! If you have a southern accent (which I love), play it up. Go "Minnie Pearl" on us..."Howdeeee!" You could get a following because of your uniqueness.

Be different. Stand out in the crowd. We all love that.

Go on, talk Twangy for me.

You need a good "Tag Line" or expression that is all yours...

    I know, how about this?...

I'll keep workin' on that one.

Wow! I can imagine what you are speaking of, but I was referencing a southern dish, "Hush Puppies", which are little fried balls of dough/bread (did I say "balls"?) They usually have onion and seasonings in them...and legend has it, that when folks were gathered around their camp fires (in days of yore), they would make these little bread treats to throw to the dogs, and as they gave them the treats, they'd yell "Hush Puppies!" to quiet them down.

Funny how words have different meanings in different countries.

When I was in high school we had a "Foreign Exchange Student" from Australia. We became friends. I took him to a baseball game. While we were sitting in the bleechers, I asked him "Who are you Routing for?" He about choked! Apparently, routing means something totally different back home than it did where I came from. (In USA, routing means "cheering for".) You'll have to ask the Aussie's on here what it means to them. I ain't touching that one!

  • Are you serious? Firstly, attractiveness is totally subjective (or is that objective?) - everyone sees something different. What is attractive to one person is not to the next.

But ask yourself, do you only respond to videos done by those people who you would consider attractive? Surely honesty & authenticity are far more important!

No. You can't. If you go look at page 774 paragraph 3 line 4 of the rules of the internet you will be able to read "Do not publish internet video unless you are as good as or better looking than Brad Pitt (if you're a male) and Angelina Jolie (if you're a female). If you do you're website will be invaded by turkish hackers for eternity." I am much better looking than Brad Pitt, and I have been doing video online for years and all my sites are free from Turkish hackers. Hope this helps.
