Can Facebook steal your page?

Hi,

I read somewhere that if your page gets popular enough FB will "adopt" it and then you can no longer control the content?

If that's true, how many "likes" does it have to have before that happens?

Thanks in advance.

    1,984.

That's the year Mark Zuckerberg was born so once a page gets that many fans, he thinks it should be his.

No they can take control even if your page is above board.

Here's what it says "If it becomes very popular (attracting thousands of fans), it will be adopted and maintained by the Facebook community."

What I'm trying to determine is how many fans will result in adoption.

Any SERIOUS help would be appreciated.

Alright, there's no hard and fast answer to this question. Reading through FB's terms reveals not much. There's the usual reasons a page would be shut-down; such as some mentioned above (illegal, inappropriate), etc.

My understanding is that if your page title and content does not contain something "official"... such as company/product names, trademarks, etc... then you shouldn't have much to worry about. As long as the title is a "general" title, which doesn't apply specifically to a particular entity, then you're in the clear.

That doesn't mean that FB won't just take your page and do with it what they please. But, at the same time, don't let that keep you from spreading your wings. Fly!

If you get to 100k fans and they "steal" it... it's all good, now you know what to do, and you will get to capitalize on those fans before it's taken away (IF it's taken away). It'll be a lesson learned. But if you keep chasing these 'worries', you're not gonna get anywhere (not you specifically but this is the kind of stuff that holds people back).

I'm pretty sure that that's just really bad wording explaining that once the page gets to a certain critical mass it will have enough activity that it will grow on its own.

          But I could be wrong.

          Wrong. Here's the deal.

Facebook fan pages were designed for one purpose and one purpose only. So legitimate celebrities, products and services can create an official page and communicate with those who like the page.

If you have an official product, service, or website, then you are entitled to create a Facebook fan page ONLY if you are an official representative for that thing.

When your fan page reaches an amount of fans (I think it's around 10,000) you will be asked by Facebook to verify you are indeed an official representative of that company, product, service, website, whatever. They will give you a few options to do this, the easiest of which is adding a fan page widget for your fanpage to your website.

Once you have verified you are the correct owners you will be fine to grow to as many fans as you like - you will notice some pages for well known brands have in excess of a million fans.

You will also notice a lot of fan pages based around stupid things like funny quotes, funny pictures, whatever. You may notice some of these fan pages have hundreds of thousands of fans but what you will also notice is that the owners of these pages are no longer able to post any content on the page because when the approval process came about, Facebook see the page is not representing an official company, product or service, and will strip the admin of their publishing rights.

In the case that they come across a fan page that is not specific to a company, product, service, something like 'Cake Decorating', they will turn those sort of pages into a community page. The reason being no one owns cake decorating and so no one person should be allowed to admin that page.

If you want to start a fan page called something general like 'Cake Decorating' then the best way to get around this is to call it something like 'Cake Decorating Tips by Your Name'. Then register a domain that has those words in it and put up a simple blog. Then put the fan page widget on your blog. Once you've done that post the url in the information section of your fan page.

That way when you reach 10,000 members and you need to verify your page, Facebook will see the url on your page, take a look and see the fan page widget, and approve you as the admin of that page.

I hope that all makes sense.

There’s a possibility that the concept of stealing your page is because of the creation of community pages. I read in one entry about the possibility of community pages stealing your network.

I’m also managing a page with lots of likes and I still have the admin rights of the so far.

If you go straight from 1983 LIKES to 1985+ LIKES.. in other words, if you get lucky and "skip" 1984, then and only then Mark Zuckerberg does not take over your page.

So, as soon as you hit 1983, you HAVE to make sure that more than 1 person will hit the LIKE button at the SAME EXACT SECOND. This way, you skip 1984 and you're safe. Otherwise... umm good luck.

No, its not bad wording. You will actually lose admin control of your page and it will then be controlled by the Facebook "community."

Bad thinking, except for them, but doubtful it's bad wording.

      Pretty brazen control freak move.

Ol' Dano was right on the money with the 1984 comment.

SW better watch out, I think it's in the WF TOS that once you get
to 20,000 posts the WF community takes over your account. lol

Exactly right. That's why he doesn't post as often here. He's trying to pace himself so his account won't be taken over until he retires.
