Easy First Steps for Potential New Internet Marketers

This place is an amazing resource!
As a brand-new student (7 days today) of the Internet Marketing profession, I'm really excited and encouraged by what I read here on the Warrior Forum (WF). Ironically enough, I came across a Yahoo! Answers questions about working from home. Someone very casually mentioned WF. The moment I got here, I was hooked.

So, what's my purpose with this thread?
I want learn from those who have more experience and help other green IMer's like myself.

I've heard that action is everything in this business, so here's what I've done in my first 7 days.
  1. Setup Publisher accounts at ClickBank, Commission Junction (CJ), and CPALead.
  2. Setup Facebook and Google PPC accounts.
  3. Found 3 ClickBank offers to promote and am attempting to profit from the 7 or so ads I've setup in 2 different campaigns (1 product category I tried to work wasn't accepted by Facebook).
  4. I found a high-traffic, low-competition niche in the craft industry and created a WordPress based, SEO-optimized website where I'll build my list by offering a 100% unique eBook. Content is limited at this point as article writing takes me time.
  5. I created a CPA landing page that utilizes a content unlocker from CPALeads to give away an eBook in an online gaming niche after survey/download completion.
  6. I began article writing for the Yahoo! Contributor Network, Demand Studios (eHow), and Break Studios all in an effort to earn part-time income, and more importantly, learn how to write SEO articles.
  7. I've placed Commission Junction banner ads relating to web hosting on my business website and a banner ad on a customer's website.
  8. I've contacted about 5 sites about possible small media buys.
So, the results from all of this?
  • For my first campaign (a direct-linked Facebook ad campaign promoting ClickBank's CityVille Secrets guide by T-Dub), I was able to get 497 hops in 6 days, but neither of the 2 order form submits converted. I stopped the ads after spending about $60. This was a good learning experience.
  • Campaign number 2: Same style as above for a different vertical, and have generated about 20 hops for about $5. I had 1 order form submit not go through. This is still active.
  • No traffic to my craft niche site- this is to be expected with only 2 articles currently on there.
  • In about 3 hours, I generated more than 30 unique visitors to my gaming niche landing page. None of the 5 surveys/download that were attempted actually fully converted.
  • My writing has gone well; I've had 4 articles accepted and my hourly rate for those is averaging about $8-9/hour.
  • None of the CJ ads have done anything as these websites get very little traffic. But hey, it's a start.
Conclusions...
All in all, I've learned a TON in these 7 days. There is more to read on this subject than I can take in. My process seems to be: I read or listen to something exciting, and go and try it... or at least think about trying it. Then, I get distracted by another skills/resource/SEO method, etc.

To date, I'm out $60 and about 70 hours or so, but hey, at least I'm moving forward right? And, thank you SO much to those pro's out there that have posted step-by-step guides on how to do stuff- they have been extremely valuable to me.

Questions for the masses...
Suggestions for where to go from here?

What do you think are the top 5 skills a newbie needs to develop to be successful at IM? (SEO, article writing, writing in general, niche research, etc.)

Are there any other brand new folks like me who want to motivate each other?

Are there any actual profits to be made outside of the IM to IM market? (I see everyone on here selling their "expertise" to new people)

Thanks for your time and the advice!

First I want to say GREAT JOB!!!! NONE of this is failure, it is success , you are learning and LIGHT YEARS ahead of everyone else. After only 7 days in the incredibly addicting IM world and you are already doing this I fully expect you to be making $1000k a month within 60 days easy . Although there are lots of tips to give out, what you need to do is simply work what your doing until its making you at least a $100 a week combined. DO NOT GIVE UP!! Work it until it works . The reason 98% of IMers fail is because they give up and switch to the next "thing". Your doing great

Your doing great! You seem very methodical in your approach. I expect that you will definitely see profits from your work so long as you do not get discouraged if the rewards do not roll in as quickly as you would like. Stay with it until you see it happen. You will do well!

        Day 8 Update
        • No successful conversions at all on the ClickBank products via Facebook ads: close to 800 hops and nothing...
        • I tried my Facebook product on AdWords and Google suspended my AdWords account before a single impression was served for either my CPALead deal, or my CB product.
        • I read a post about making money with Amazon and jumped on board. I bought a domain and have to start writing articles.
        New Final Thoughts
        • I've now spent about $110 on FB ads for not a single successful conversion. Wrong product? No landing page affecting me THAT much?
        • Getting slapped by Google for what I assume to be my CPALead offer sucks. Now I know...
        • At the end of the day, I've learned a few things that I should have received better through reading on the forums here:
...I need to develop relationships with my website visitors, which takes time- this is real work, and it takes a lot of time.
Did I come to the right conclusion?

I hate to spend money on PPC, and I've heard that Facebook ads are expensive and not bringing in the corresponding revenue.

Why don't you use article marketing? Yes, it will mean writing articles and submitting them, but when you pay for an ad, it will only remain active, as long as you keep paying for it. If you write and submit an article, it will remain active forever, and keep sending you traffic.

Action is not everything, by the way. Action + persistence is.

You're saying article marketing focused around either my Amazon-product niche or my craft-niche?

      And, thanks for the input!

Combine all aspects to be successful however if you're new, I recommend to stay away from PPC. You'll spend tons of money and probably get 0 results because it's based off trial and error. Use article marketing and organic traffic as your main resource. Find niches that have low and easy competition that you can actually out rank your competitors. You need to put in the work to do research before you jump in trying to affiliate a product or you will be wondering why you haven't made a dime. 800 hops with 0 conversions just means you're not targeting the right leads and you're trying to do some cold selling. Here are some recommended steps:

Do research, find a niche/product you know something about. Look for easy competition so you can out rank competitors. If you do not know how to do this, then learn how to do keyword research using Market Samurai. (check sig)
Write articles, do article marketing to get some traffic generated while targeting warmer leads.
Stay away from PPC, especially if you're new. You're money will be eatin up.
If all else fails, check out WSO's, pick 1 and just follow the method. There are tons of methods on WF, but people like to do things their own way. If your way isn't working, try a different approach. Hope this helps, good luck!
