I have no hard data to back this up, but I'm confident...

You'll Make More $$$ On This Forum If You...

Put up a real picture of yourself.

Now I know not everyone has the hot looks of Eric Louviere, but I'm willing to bet adding a happy pic to your avatar will do wonders for you.

Why?

1. People will remember you easier
2. People will trust you more
3. People will associate you face with something or someone they recognize
4. They may have the hots for you
5. They will be able to pick you out at a seminar.

I could keep going and going.

The internet is changing very fast, and those who are not afraid of transparency stand to make a lot more cash then those who are hiding behind the scenes and afraid to show their face.

Anyhow, it's just my opinion. I could be wrong, but I highly doubt it.

J-Mo

PS: Allen, thanks for giving the forum a more personal feel. I like it way better, and have already been able to use the pics of people to remember a lot more users.

Yep, you're probably right about that.
They also say that your pic on your site, blog, sales letter, etc.
is better for conversions than not having one.

I'm gonna test it out an put up a pic on the WF.
I'll let you know what happens...

I'm reasonably sure my real face would not increase sales. It'll just frighten people away.

You'll have to settle for the cartoon me, which looks like me, except for being two-dimensional. Of course, some people think I'm two-dimensional, so, really, it works.

It isn't just selling on this forum Jason. The contacts you make on this forum is priceless and worth far more than what you can make selling products on this forum. IMO, that is where the real money is made. Personally, I owe a lot to this forum just from the people I have been introduced to.

I do think it will be easier to form friendships with people here by using your own pictures just like Jason said in the OP.

Yep, I agree - so far anyhow.

I just have a photo of my best friend instead and he gets alot more compliments than I ever would with my ugly mug.

He's the ultimate babe magnet riding hanging out the window riding around with me. To bad I didn't have him 10 years ago when I was single, I wouldn't have had to try as hard to meet attractive women since he now does it for me just by being a dog, in the true sense of the word.

I don't have any solid data to back this up either but I have some anecdotal evidence...and tend to agree with you.

When I put my face on one or two of my consulting/pitch sites I started to get more consulting inquiries...not sure if it was from the image addition or the increase in hits from various locations. I know it didn't hurt...well I hope not anyways...my wife says I'm not that much of a horrible looking chud. ;-)

It just makes good business sense.

People like to do business with people they know, like and trust.

Putting yourself "out there" with your picture lets others know you're not afraid to let them into your world and makes them feel more comfortable with the possibility of inviting you into their world too.

                Totally agree and loving it!

I know that everyone is not here to sell stuff.

Heck, I seldom sell stuff either.

But I think most will agree it makes a better forum experience when we can see who we are dealing with.

I think this will become a much nicer and tight nit community with more transparency available. In fact, I think a lot of the pessimism will naturally be reduced by us being so open.

Anyhow, cool to see lot's of you agree with me.

And hey, even if you think you're not hot like Eric, it could be worse. You could look like Harlan. Or even worse, a 2006 Harlan!

Yep. He looks like my former boss Tony who is originally from Ireland. (No accent, though...I suspect he's been here for years.)

I had my assistant manager convinced one March 17 that it was a sacred holiday for Tony and he'd better be respectful. It worked, too...until Tony told him that St. Patrick's Day was to the Irish what Cinco de Mayo is to the Mexican citizens; it's more of an AMERICAN holiday than anything.

              J-MO's gotta point.

I think that this whole new format at the WF is helping me remember more people. And the simple fact we can have our avatars next to our posts makes everything really personal.

Well, I would think that showing the real you is what matters most in building relationships and making $$$. I would be dissapointed if I learnt that the person is using a false photo. I see no problem with age.

I also think there is no one who is ugly. there will always be something that will attract people to you.. may be some think that they are also ugly so you can form your click. But it is true. Personal photos are very important. I should go and upload mine.

Do you realize that your own verbiage is subtly hypnotizing you to be horrible at memorization. Every time you say such a thing you get worse and worse.

You'd be better off to brag about being the best name rememberer in the entire planet. Even if it wasn't true, it would help you to get better.

Words are things, and I'm amazed at how many people say... "I suck at remembering names".

It's no wonder they suck at it so bad. They've been repeating it for eons like a mantra.

Good point that I use in everything else I do...I always tell myself how kickass I am at programming lol.

OK...I will remember that I am the best name rememberer on the planet from now on.

                      What was your name again?

It is a real valid point though that you make Jason...anytime you tell yourself you can't do something you are giving yourself bad feedback that will sooner or later stick and become true.

EDIT: Muhahaha...I just thought of something. Wait til I tell my wife how kickass I am in bed...Because she doesn't seem to remember....

Jason, I agree with you 100%.

Since I've started doing videos and people have gotten to see my handsome
face, my sales have increased. Heck, I'm going to break all my previous sales
                records this year.

Putting my pic up an an avatar is child's play.

Just don't want any of the ladies here to come after me. I'm a happily
                married man.

Zerofill, I agree - I remember faces not names. Names sometimes, faces always. I actually just lost track of where I put my pic. Didn't even realize I didn't have it here!

Welcome to the Board Victoria. You're very beautiful so I re-sized your avatar for you if you'd like to use the biggest size allowable (80x80 pixels).

                      Attachment 265

If you decide to use it, simply right-click the image, then click 'save-as'. Save it to you computer and then re-do what you did with your original photo to upload it to your profile.

PS - Hope you do not mind my doing this.
PPS - Now, if only we could get Jason to make his smaller.

[EDIT] After posting this... I see you re-sized it on your own.
(mine is a little more square... so still feel free)... or not.

                            1. People will remember you easier
                            2. People will trust you more
                            3. People will associate you face with something or someone they recognize
                            4. They may have the hots for you
                            5. They will be able to pick you out at a seminar.

I could keep going and going.

The internet is changing very fast, and those who are not afraid of transparency stand to make a lot more cash then those who are hiding behind the scenes and afraid to show their face.
I believe that it's also very important to pick up the phone or get on Skype and actually TALK to people instead of just sending email.
It's amazing how much closer my connections with other people in this biz
get just from a phone call.
Creating videos of yourself and going to live seminars/trainings should also be on your list of things to do.

                            Cheers,

Personally, I think it is nothing short of Insane to be putting your Name and picture sprawled out all over the Internet like this.

You might say it makes you look more ethical and trustworthy. It may well be but the Risk/Reward ratio is NOT good enough for me. What I mean is the chance you take with ALL the identity theft and stalking from crazy people who lurk on the NET is just NOT worth it for me !!

I am sorry I know many of you may disagree but I think you can be very succesful without revealing too much.

Bottom Line : ITS Just NOT worth it to post your picture ,name etc..just because you think it builds stronger and more personal relationships with your Customers and Colleagues. Frankly,I dont care how much more money it makes you. Not when you could potentially jeopardize the welfare and safety of you and your Family !!

I agree that a picture is a much better selling point, not to mention for us females it also lays to rest the question of our gender. ( Although of course, they could be fake.)

Being that IM is mostly male dominated I would like to hope that all the boys would rather buy their products from us pretty ladies. Or it could go the opposite way and become an ego smasher

Either way, I like being able to add more of me to my online presence. When someone searches for me, they can even see the way I look. Or if I ever escape my 5 kids to go to a seminar, they will know me by appearance.

                              Just my two cents.

Blimey, I'm gonna disagree (always one isn't there? )

Frankly I'm astonished at the naivete of you guys. All you guys can think about is "ooh it might make me more money if people can see who I am" (might also lose it if you have shifty eyes and look untrustworthy :p).

This is the INTERNET. Hello?? Is everyone very stoned?

You put your picture up there and anyone can take it. They needn't bother grabbing a stock image, they might think your image fits the bill for their sales page. But that's only a tiny risk as this is an incestuous little world. Outside of IM is where the problems lie, because IM doesn't exist in a vacuum.

If you frequent non-IM forums look at all the avatars people have. Most don't create them from their own picture, they nick them from other peoples avatars. If it's a 'person' it doesn't mean it's them, they could have got it from anywhere. It might even be yours! You better hope if someone is using your photo as their avatar they have similar views to yourself!

Then there are the people having cyber sex. They need to swap photos and I doubt they'd be dumb enough to use their own and risk their spouses catching them. So they'll need to use someone elses. These threads are all indexed, and probably the images too. Bit of time spent on Google Images and they might get lucky and find your pic to use.

As for the women using their pics. Again, dumb. There was a famous female blogger who recently had horrendous problems because of this. It was a political blog, involved making money too (but not IM). Someone got annoyed with her and because she'd made the mistake of having her photo and real name out there, others decided to photoshop it in obscene and sadomasochistic ways. Once they've got your real name, it isn't that hard for a determined person who knows what they are doing to get your phone number. There was a particular site that did nothing but express violent sexual fantasies about her and she was bombarded with nasty emails and phone calls. She had to quit, and almost had a breakdown. These weren't kids either, they were grown men, some of whom she'd met at blogging seminars. The Law didn't do much. They were just "having a laugh" and she was being too sensitive and a "silly woman".

(Oh and even back in the days of the Telnet BBS's men were pretending to be women, so just because someone has a female avatar it ain't necessarily so. :rolleyes

I assume you guys still get Direct Mail sent to you? How many of them have a picture of themselves on the salesletter? The rare times they do, how often do you think they are genuine? Do you think the Direct Mail industry suffers because they don't have their image on the mailshots? I doubt it.

Agreed. Basic security & common sense. But maybe I'm more sensitive because I was 'stalked' after presenting at a seminar and completely freaked out when people found me at my 'real' job (in a different field of study no less) a few days later with questions about the seminar I gave. This was in NYC, and believe me, it was scary and not flattering and I couldn't get rid of them--actually had to have all my work phone calls monitored and building security shut down my wing of the office.

I also have to stay out of sight professionally in non-professional areas. I own offline businesses that would be negatively impacted if non-topic searches and social sites find 'stuff' in a search under my name. That's the reality.

On the other hand, in this forum, most PM's, all WSO's, business transactions, and product reviews, private emails, etc, all get my 'real identity' and location, it's not a secret, it's a common sense precaution.

I agree with a few above who have stated it.

We all subconsciously judge other people for one reason or another. Not saying we do it intentionally. But at least think about it before you rush to put your picture up.

Even if you are not trying to selling anything here. Think about it.

Reminds me of the test mentioned in Blink and I am sure many other books.

The picture is a really cool thing. Personally, when we switched to the new forum, I got to know so many more people due to associating a face with a forum name. Pretty cool how this made a difference.

Transparency is really an interesting development online. I just bought a product from someone who has answered tons of my emails and sends free gifts my way. He's a person, not an email address. This definitely made a difference on why I bought his product.

I second the changes to the forum. I learn something new every day and this new functionality has really increased the "networking" potential here!

    Cheers,

    Brad Spencer

I hate to admit it, but I agree there is some truth to being able to relate to the seller.
Because, after you build your list, then your work hard to establish TRUST with the people on your list. And with the feeling of TRUST, they then feel confident to buy from you!

    Hey Jason,

I completely agree. A real photo of yourself is a key factor in branding yourself. People want to know who they are talking to AND that you are a real person.

In addition, it is important to include contact information. I cannot tell you how many people have joined various teams with me because they knew how to contact me and I was not just a vague person on the other side of a computer.

I am a real person and people love that personal touch in this day of the internet.

    Thanks a bunch!

    Many blessings.

IMO I have to reply to this! I personally to do all the time and always start by saying ...

"Yes that's me in the picture you see there, noting special to look at but you see you don't have to be anybody special to make it in this business!"

It gets people smiling and makes you a likable kind of guy.

        -Alex Kaplo
Alex, that's a great attitude and a great approach!

Jason, for the most part I think you are right. Although a really bad photo (not "bad" so much as in the person is not attractive, but "bad" as in the person looks angry, or bizarre, or sinister for example) ...can actually have the opposite affect on sales. Also, if you want someone to take you and your product seriously and your photo conveys a different message (such as it's too seductive, or too goofy) or your appearance clashes with your target market (for example, you have a lot of tattoos and piercings and your target market is senior citizens) that can be detrimental. Appearance can play a significant role in sales. (Btw, nothing wrong with tattoos and piercings!)

People tend to prefer to buy from someone they feel comfortable with...someone they feel they can trust... someone who looks open and friendly in their photo, which generally means smiling. Also, there has been tons of research that shows that the more attractive and/or likable a person is, the more positive qualities people will initially associate with that person, such as intelligence, trustworthiness, kindness, etc (part of the "halo effect"). It's unfair, but true. Unfortunately, appearances can be deceiving, as we all well know, and some have used that to their benefit (like Ted Bundy did so well...)

It has been really nice on this new forum to see people's pictures....it makes everyone more real and personable. It is funny how some people look entirely different than I imagined them!

Transparency matters big time in this business.

It is impossible to work behind the scenes without exposing yourself on some level. People DO want to know who they are buying form. People by people after all.

There are obviously some exceptions to this rule (blackhat techniques, adsense farms, etc) but if you want to run a business that actually adds value to peoples lives, start adding videos, pics

Thank you Jason, that was all Excellent advice so I have added a recent photo.

I am really enjoying this forum. I have learned more in the last 2 days reading through these posts than I have from many of the ebooks about IM. Keep up the good work. Look for future posts from me that provide valuable content to the community.

What if I have no intention of making money on this forum? Is using a mugshot still advisable?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[478735].message }}
  • Yes Putting your real photo on this forum and your real name will allow
everyone to build trust with you. I certainly would be wiry of somebody
selling a product but hasn't got there real photo or name on here.
    But that's just me

its just good business to do these things

    Go do it.

    Jason,

Thanks for the heads up, I just added mine. I also like to see who I'm talking to so it only makes sense, regardless of the extra money it can make.

    Good Call,

I actually agree to what you said. Transparency though may not be a big factor for earning but is surely one factor.

At least you know whom you are communicating to.

What up Big Jay. Edit your avatar in the User CP. It's separate from the profile pic.

That's really good idea, now I just have to look for a "happy" picture of myself..

      Hey Jason,

Good point...looking to buy or not I think people need to feel comfortable in who they're dealing with even if it's just basic "net conversation".

On the other hand, some people are a pain in the a** and having a face to associate with the name could work against them in a way.

You likely have my name embedded in your melon! "Ahhhhhh, Mike Murphy...AGAIN......what now dude?"

Who am I kidding? You dig me. ;-)

Does anyone have an idea why I may not be able to see it?
