I'm amazed, Google is helping the competition..

Didn't really know what to make of this.

I just bought a new lap top and when I downloaded
Google Chrome, the first thing I saw was this..

I just thought it was a bit strange that on Google's own browser
as a company that makes the majority of their money from their
search engine they would give their users the option to to use
someone elses, namely Yahoo!

I doubt Yahoo would be so kind to return the favour.

What are Google thinking?

Will

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Haha Nicely Said. Google really didn't add an option for Bing...

Google is not that hung up on competition. They are the number 1 search engine in more than 60 countries. Second, you need competitors to drive business, technology, and a demand for services or product.

Search engines do not use the same algorithms to create search results so most of the time the top 10 in Google will not be the same as they are in the others. The search engine business although competitive is not a dog eat dog world. Most search engines are more worried about attracting new loyal users than stealing them from someone else, it take too much time and energy to fight a company then it does to make yours better.

As a search engine developer I am not worried about 5 or 6 other major search engines out there, my site has features they don't, they have things I can't afford, but I will still have a loyal following because I offer some things they don't that people enjoy.

  • You can learn a lot from the practice of sharing as google is doing.

When you are the company that initiates sharing, everyone goes to you to get to those other companies as well.

Microsoft was forced to do this because of Anti Competition lawsuits.

I doubt Google is being charitable. They are doing it to comply with legal precedent.

Actually Google is using this option to avoid legal restrictions as previously faced by Microsoft. MS use to set IE as default browser for its operating systems which resulted into legal complications for Microsoft in many European countries. Under some rules you cannot restrict your buyers to your other products as well.

    Amitywill,
I'm going way out on a limb...with nothing more than my assumptions and past experience as a guide.

But my opinion is that Google gathers quite a bit of data from Google Chrome users and would rather have you "feeling comfortable" about your perceived power to choose so that they can keep you starting their browser up when you surf.

Again, pure opinion...but I wouldn't be surprised if a curious programmer could back this up.

It is not just Google...it is any user friendly software you add to your computer that connects to the internet. Do you really think they give you a free product and get nothing in return?

Have you ever been shopping around online for a new stove and 2 days later you get ads from Home Depot, Sears, Lowes, and Walmart because they have the best deal on stoves?

This is nothing new with internet technology and it is only going to get worse. That is why we are developing a search engine that lets you be you, no tracking, no targeted ads (unless you search a keyword) no IP sniffing, no $50 a click pay per click, just type...click....go...NO BS.

        That's the spirit ,

        seriously.

I'm always happy to see the John Conners of this world fighting the Terminators.

Well on a similar note actually, Yahoo is allowing you to sign in to their answers page (and probably other services) using your Google account!

All interesting replies! I was thinking maybe there's a partnership
going on or something. Maybe it's early days.

Also I never knew about this legal deal. Surely if they were
being made to do it by law they would have Bing up there
      and not Ask though right?

Because don't Google control the ads on Ask.com so they
would only be benefiting themselves there really.

I chose Google as I expect most people will. It would be interesting actually
      to see the percentages.
