Email marketer promise

So I was setting up my GetResponse email marketing account, and In my follow up message I told them what they could expect from me and my emails. Heres what I put:

I just want to clear some things up.You might have subscribed to mailing
lists in the past that have constantly sent you links to join OTHER mailing
lists. You probably have joined lists that constant sent and resent
useless affiliate links over and over. While I might send you affiliate
offers from time to time they will be offers that I have used myself
and they will be relevant, interesting, and above all useful. I will not
pester you with emails, offers, and links. I will try to send only
useful or interesting information. And above all, I will never send spam or
unwanted email.

What do you think? Do you do something similar?

I think it sounds good, in theory, but there were a few things that would set off alarm bells in my head.

This is my gut reaction, and I share it only in the hope that it will help you.

I just want to clear some things up.You might have subscribed to mailing
lists in the past that have constantly sent you links to join OTHER mailing
    lists.
"Oh boy, here we go! Let the excuses begin."

You probably have joined lists that constant sent and resent
useless affiliate links over and over.
"Yep, here it is. Sounds like this is going to be another one of THOSE lists."

While I might send you affiliate offers from time to time
"I bet my definition of 'from time to time' is different than his."

they will be offers that I have used myself and they will be relevant, interesting, and above all useful.
"I assumed as much, but methinks he doth protest too much."

I will not pester you with emails, offers, and links.
"Of course you will. How do you know what I will consider as pestering?"

I will try to send only useful or interesting information.
    "Try???"

And above all, I will never send spam or unwanted email.
"There's no way he can make and live up to that promise because there are a lot of reasons why I may not want a particular email at any given moment."

Okay, like I said, those were my gut reactions, the " " represent the thoughts that would be in my head if I received such a welcome message. I believe you mean well, and some people may take it the right way. But the way I see it, even though you are saying you WON'T do these negative things, you're bringing negative things to your subscriber's attention. Things they may not have been thinking of at all.

Again, I'm trying to help, and have a hunch this tactic could potentially backfire.

    All the best,
    Michael

Those were my thoughts as well. It's like dropping off your car and the valet tells you, "I'm totally not going to key your car and drive it around town on a joyride. Your car is safe with me."

I don't even put the usual, "i will never sell your email address, blah blah" below opt in boxes. Don't want to put negative thoughts in my prospect's head.

Why draw attention to the fact that they have subscribed to anything? They know that they did. Why harp on it? When an email comes in from me, I want them to say, "Cool, Brian sent me an email" and not, "Oh man, another automated message".

Thanks for the tips. I just do not know what to put for my first autoresponder message. I want it to be more of a newsletter, but I don't really know how to set them up or what to put in them. Do you guys have any tips or pointers about content?

The first email can simply thank them for subscribing, and then give them some ideas of what they can expect in upcoming messages.

If they get any bonuses, then you can tell them how to get those bonuses.

I agree with the others. You do not want to plant negative seeds where none may currently exist. Using the wording you did here only dredges up ill will and memories of past mistreatment. And since you brought it up, they'll associate you with those negative experiences.

That's why I never even use those innocuous "we hate spam as much as you do" blurbs. If they're ready to opt into one of my lists, the last thing I want them associating it with is spam.

You could try something a little lighter, like...

"Thanks for hopping on for the ride. Glad to have you aboard. First off, about that [whatever] I promised you. Here's the link where you can download it:

        [link]

You might be wondering what comes next. Well, (describe the kind of content you plan to send). Oh, and sometimes I might send you links to stuff I use and think you might get some use out of.

Remember to download [whatever] at [link].

        One more thing...

If I do something you don't like, let me know. We all make mistakes sometimes. And if I don't know, I can't fix things, right?

And if I do something really well, tell me about that, too - and tell your friends (wink, wink)..."
