The Real Secret to Building a Successful Business

Would you like to know the real secret to building a successful business?

Are you sure you can handle it?

I'll spill it in just a minute here. First, I'm putting myself on the line here, because there are a lot of "big names" that don't want you to know this secret. They never want you to find out! Because, the moment you do, you will stop buying their products.

Mind you, that's not all the big names. Some of them genuinely want you to succeed. So, they will happily disclose this secret. In fact, many do quite regularly.

The problem is that people just don't listen.

Well, okay, they do listen. They do hear it. They just don't believe it.

Because, when it comes down to it, they don't want to believe it.

They are certain that people are holding out on them.

They are sure that there's more to it.

They just know that if they can figure out this one thing, all the success they desire will be there for the taking.

I know what you're thinking...

You are thinking that I'm going to tell you there is no secret.

Wrong!

People have told you there's no secret.

I've probably told you there's no secret--but I was wrong!

You may even tell yourself there's no secret.

You may think you believe there is no secret.

But, that's not true. If it were, you wouldn't be reading this.

You're reading this because, deep down, you really think there is a secret--and you want to know what it is!

You may be thinking, oh, no, you just wanted to read this post so you could debunk the secret. But, you're only lying to yourself. If you thought there was no secret, you wouldn't waste your time on this post. You'd leave it for the poor rubes who believed in that sort of "nonsense." You'd be too busy building your successful business to come here to debunk whatever secret I revealed.

So, you think there's a secret.

You want to know the secret.

Fine then. I've pulled you in far enough.

So, here's the secret: Stop looking for secrets!

Seriously. There is no secret, but the secret isn't knowing that there isn't a secret. The secret is in not chasing after secrets that aren't there.

Building a successful business takes time and work and effort. You can't do the things necessary to build a successful business if you're chasing after secrets.

You may tell yourself you don't think there's a secret, but until you really accept and believe that, you're going to keep chasing after that elusive secret instead of spending your time actually building your business.

Don't.

There is no secret. Accept it. Move on. Stop looking for it. Stop buying stuff claiming to reveal the secret. Stop wasting time watching sales pitches claiming to reveal the secret. Just stop.

There you go. The cat's out of the bag!

    Truth...

There is a secret, but it has never been a secret...

Every person on the planet has heard it before...

They just don't want to believe...

They doubt the obvious, even when every fiber of their being says that it must be the truth...

The not-so-secret secret is that that we must work hard to provide real value to others...

It is so simple that people want to doubt it, and they doubt it in droves...

Instead of accepting the truth of the matter, they spend their days chasing the secrets, while in denial about the obvious truth...

    Go figure...

Bill, I think that deep down, the majority of people know this fact, it's just that compelling sales copy has done such a great job of appealing to their inner greed and innate laziness - people desperately want to believe there is a short cut that eliminates all the work and effort involved, and will cling to anything that offers even a shred of hope about this obviously false paradigm.

Paul: Deep down, I know you are right.

I keep telling myself that I should make products for that marketplace, with a no refund policy to lazy people, but if I did that, I am not sure that I could sleep well during the day or night.

Exactly. Not only would you not sleep well at night, the constant harassment via email/IM/etc. from disgruntled purchasers (always a given when marketing to this crowd) would be sufficient to drive you insane during the day - and you never know what kind of psychopath may start stalking you on the internet and even offline because of this.

It's like one of those "find the object" puzzles. You stare at the picture for a long time, going over it pixel by pixel.

Suddenly, you spot the object. And once you spot the object, it's obvious.

You can't look at the picture and not see the object.

          Great post!

One of the biggest lessons i have learned in the pass three years was to be more action orientated. Looking back some of the projects that took me 6 months to complete could be done in just 2!

I say research and education should consist max of 20% of your time. The rest of the time should be spent doing, or even experimenting if you have that luxury.

And the people over on THAT said are saying "No it isn't! It's impossible!"

You have to sit down, shut up, take a deep breath... and look where we're pointing. You won't see it at first. But then, like a flash, you'll see it - and you can't unsee it.

In think and Grow Rich, Mr. Hill tells a true story of a Gold Miner.

If I remember the story correctly, the guy finds a little gold vein. He goes out, gets tons of investment money from all of his family and get's to work with big fancy machines to dig up the gold.

It doesn't take very long for the gold to dry up. And he becomes discouraged and quits.

Well apparently, a geologist who knows something about how gold works finds out this story.

He buy's this mans equipment - all of it - because the man was desperate to get out of it, thinking he lost.

The geologist gets to digging and finds a HUGE gold vein only 6 inches from where the first guy stopped.

His specialized knowledge allowed him to see what the other guy didn't. That's lesson #1 (Gain more knowledge into WHY something isn't working)

Lesson #2 - perseverance wins the day.

I make and have made lots of money outside the IM niche. It is possible, gold is out there - you are only 6 inches from it.

But the dream of making money fast on the internet is what got alot of us in here in the first place. I probably would not have spent month trying to learn internet marketing if I did not believe that I would be rich on the way. Now a few years later I have realized that this is a job. A pretty exhausting job but I still like it and am doing better for each week.

I simply think we have to accept that people want the easy way, and in order to make money we should provide an easy way. They can learn along the way that what we showed them in the 30 minutes presentation was just a sneak peak into the world that they need to understand to actually make a living of it

Your second paragraph answers your first.

It's not exactly a secret, but the dream merchants won't point it out for you, either.

Sh-, uh, stuff happens. Sometimes things don't work and you have to start over again. Anyone that tells you they never failed either is lying, hasn't tried much, or has a deal with the devil.

Learn what you can from the failures, dust yourself off, and keep on plugging. Success is the best revenge...

Dear Dan, I confess that I almost gave up reading what you wrote because it was too long and quite repetitive. I totally disagree with you, and I’m going to justify my position.

There are Many secrets to building a successful business online. When an internet user as ignorant as I was in 2006 (when my adventures online begun) reads about so many success stories online, this person will tend to believe that it is really very simple to make money online. Everything seems to be very simple. It really is quite simpler to work online than offline with physical objects that you have to keep, carry, send, etc. The internet reduced many costs, and a lot of trouble.

Nobody explained me that Without Traffic your site is dead, and that in order to get traffic you have to work a lot, or pay a lot (or both). The competition online is more than fierce. You may be a genius trying to sell diamonds for pennies but you’ll never manage to sell anything if you don’t know how to get traffic, and mainly how to convert this traffic into customers that will purchase your products.

So, today that I know how everything works online, I tell everyone that making money online is very complicated, time consuming and tiring. Everything becomes simple only when you have the indispensable knowledge. Without knowledge, you’ll never manage to make money in a very complex and dangerous system like the internet.

There are too many dangers online. You can very easily lose your money, your work, income, etc, because there are many hackers, liars, unexpected Google rules, crazy internet users, etc.

The secret number 1 to building a successful business online is acquiring the indispensable knowledge in order to lead with this very complex and dangerous system.

Now, here are the next secrets:

2- You have to sell only products that are in demand, and never waste your time trying to sell something without first of all finding buyers who regularly purchase the products you intend to promote.

3- You need a business plan. If you work without knowing what you are doing, you’ll only spend your money, without building anything.

4- You have to learn many smart business strategies, and copywriting techniques.

5- You cannot stop studying, evolving and improving your web pages because the internet keeps changing.

6- You have to work very hard, and make many calculations. Everything you do must have the right keywords. Finding the keywords that will attract search engine traffic and incite the public curiosity is a daily challenge for all business owners.

    7- Etc.

But, none of those are secrets. It's all knowledge. And, all that knowledge is accessible. It's not hidden away. It's not sealed in a vault somewhere that you can only get into if you know the right people, know the right handshake and pay a $1,000 membership fee.

I submit that there is a difference between not knowing something because you haven't learned it yet and not knowing something because it's deliberately kept hidden and out of your reach.
