Does URL shortening With tinyurl.com & others lose link juice

URL shortening by sites such as tinyurl & bit.ly are common and I can understand why affiliate links may want to be masked. However if you use them for shortening back links with anchor text do you lose the benefit in the search engine?

If the link anchor text is shortened to anchor text will google still find & 'credit' the link and anchor text to the site, thus still moving up the results pages?

I ask because of the character limits on resource boxes from services like UAW, which is causing me slight irritation at present, as I have a few long domain names and inner page titles.
