... when we read the news that Google is retrenching staff.

If that ever happens.

Aren't we glad that we are in Internet Marketing industry?

It seems like many of us have actually made MORE money in light of all of the economic bad news.

Why that is, I do not know

I think otherwise. We have huge opportunity out there! We should be performance based instead of fixed rate!

    Retrenching

    1. To cut down; reduce.
    2. To remove, delete, or omit.
    v.intr.
    To curtail expenses; economize.

This is what clearly Google is doing now. The funny thing is that it only took 45 days from Joseph's extremely confident opening post for this to happen!

    Google is not IM, it's a portal/search engine/company.

We, IM still have bright future!

The brighter the future, the tougher the competition.
At least it's better than not having anything to do (retrenchment)

Exactly! What I am trying to say is that the link is very tenuous indeed indeed. In fact, the worse Google is affected, the better it may be for some IMers as advertising costs go down as well.

My impression is that so far, IMers with products seem to be doing rather well, whereas those who depend on Adsense and other types of advertising revenue not as well.

I really feel sorry for anyone working in banking, autos and retail. They must go to work every day wondering if "today is the day they announce job cuts". Businesses previously regarded as bullet proof are going under, I've never seen anything like this before in MY life. How can anyone make plans for the future in a regular job if their skills aren't easily transferred and/or the industry they are in is in decline.

Car styling and design houses are even going under. I think Pininfarina was sold off the other day as well, and they were behind one of my favorite cars of all time.

Hope things improve for everyone sooner rather than later. Everyone should at least be able to work for a living if they want to.
