A question on competitor.

A noob question here:

How do you guys find out / determine who is your top competitor ? that is milking the most in your given niche, keyword (s), etc?
How do you benchmark it?

I've searched around, maybe I missed it, but mostly is about "1st determine who is your competitor, etc". I know, but how?
is there like a free tool or something where you type in your keyword and the top sit comes out...or anything?

Thanks.

I normally work out the top competitor by seeing who's claiming the top spots in Google for the top keywords. You can then use sites like compete.com to how much traffic the site is getting plus other analytics to see how they're doing.

That's normally how I do it in a niche I'm unfamiliar with.

Your top competitors will be the guys you see in as many traffic channles as possible. What I mean by that is, if you see a competitor both in the SEO results pages and running paid ads, and if you can determine they have been in those positions for a fair amount of time, odds are they're a top competitor.

One the whole the more targeted places you see your competitor over time the more weight I'd give them. Also if you can pull up their sales/home pages from archive.org and see that they have been continually split testing and trying to improve their conversion thats another great indicator of a strong competitor.

In general your looking for competitors who look like they know what they're doing and actively trying to improve their sales & conversions.

        Hi Scooby,

The easiest way is to type in the keywords you want to rank for into Google and other major search engines such as Bing. The top ten results from each SE are your competition. You don't need to concern yourself with anybody beyond page 1.

You then have to determine what got these sites onto page 1 and consider how strong their position is. Some sites may be very strong to compete against, others will be easy peasy.

        Hope this helps.
