Google Roller Coaster Ride

Hi,

I have a 5 month review site that got on Google page 2 in its 2nd month for a relatively hot keyword phrase. After a little more on-page optimization, I managed to get to rank 1. After about 3 weeks of increasing traffic, my site got dropped off and nowhere to be found. Well, I knew it could be temporary thing.

Presto, 3 days later, it came back to position 5. Then after about a week, it vanished again to appear at position 1 five days later. To cut a long story short, today is its 4th time disappearing.

I have not been doing much SEO work on the site since it got on rank 1 the first time. So I am puzzled why this is happening? I observed other similar sites and they tend to stick to their relative positions. And if my site quality is not that good, then why every time it reappeared the site has never dropped beyond position 5?

Anyone encountered such an issue? Any advise how to make my site stick? As long as it stick, then I can do something about it.. otherwise, it seems like I can only accept to enjoy the Google Roller Coaster ride.

    It is just the google shuffle of the term. Just keep building your links and it will be back up there again in no time. They actually did the same exact thing to one of my sites. I held the number one spot for 3 months then vanished. I found my site on page 12 then a few days later on page 4 and soon will be back up to the number one spot again. Just keep building your links and it will be fine.

    I had a site do the same exact thing for about six months then one day it stuck at #1 and has been that way since June.

    I have another site that seems to be following the same path.

    Not sure why it happens or what it means but if they eventually stick at #1, it's not such a bad thing!

      Google isn't sure where you fit in yet, so they will bounce you around, if you keeping adding good content and links they will have to put you in the number 1 position and keep you there for a while. At which point you can slack off a little, but always do some maintenance work.

        I'm in a similar situation with two sites bouncing around for just over a month, now. I've started to add new content and will backlink, and hopefully they will settle down soon.

    Some people call this the "Google dance", and it is normal for your site to exhibit this erratic behavior while Google is apparently figuring out what position your site should rank.

    You have mentioned doing some on-page SEO in your post, and it is good to hear that you're continually tweaking and improving it over time. Are you building any backlinks to it though? You didn't make any mention of that - you should be continually building links to your site over the first few months at least, and you need to ensure that your site has more incoming backlinks than the majority of your competition on the first page of Google. This way you maximize your chances of ranking high on the first page, and staying there permanently.

    I have a couple of sites doing the 'Google Dance' - very frustrating but I just hope that eventually they will hit a good spot and stick there.

    A lot of people report similar effect in the forums. It is normal when Google evaluates a new site.

    There is a rumor that Google tends to give a new site some good rankings for a while, and see if it "sticks", in terms of growing link popularity. So the key is to continue building links at a stable or accelerating pace, then Google will know your website is here to stay.

    Otherwise, it is obvious that the links you collected are the results of a one-off promotion campaign or a stroke of luck, and that results in your rankings returning to a lower level.

      I was going to post something similar to this- but yeah. Once you've got Google ranking you in the first place, just focus on continually publishing content to the website to keep things fresh, and slowly building QUALITY backlinks. You probably don't need more directory submissions or social bookmarks or things like that. You want relevant, quality backlinks.
