Pictures Enclosed Do Not Bend

This is a very common tactic used by savvy direct mailers. Not sure why you are calling them spammers though. However, dude should of put some kind of photo in there to stay congruent with the writing on the envelope.

I would imagine that the open rate of that piece of junk mail was extremely high. Well played, paper spammer. Well played.

From a marketing standpoint, I love hearing about new ideas.

Can I ask what type of envelope it was? Was it a regular business envelope? A photo mailer?

Yes. The first key to direct mail is to get them to open it.

Actually, that is the second key. The first is to get them to NOT throw it away.

I have to say that's a very clever tactic - I've nearly forgotten about snail mail all together over the last couple years, everything is digital now!

Might have to go dust off my mailbox and see if I have any goodies from our local "spammers"

Having passed his course, I'm actually wondering what he didn't do in Vegas.

I had similar experience sometime ago and mine wasn't direct mail. It came straight to my cell phone with a number I could hardly reach. So I waved it off..

I used that technique for some 20 years in the photo business. My mailing pieces included a printed-on-Kodak photo in a style I would be advertising in the mailer. On the outside was stamped, Photo Enclosed - Do Not Bend.

This seems so normal to me that it had not occurred to me other marketers would not know it.

I also would sometimes add other "stuff" to make it true lumpy mail. The success rate was phenomenal. I would often get a 20:1 sales to total mailing cost ratio on these mailings.

That's standard practice for savvy direct mailers - it should ensure pretty high open rates. It also goes to show that direct mail is far from dead, no matter how beleaguered the USPS might seem to us.
