Pictures Enclosed Do Not Bend

I just went to the mailbox and grabbed my mail. As I was going through it, I saw an envelope that had "Pictures Enclosed Do Not Bend" stamped on it.

The address seemed to be hand written and there was no return address.

My first thoughts were that somebody had taken pictures during my last trip to Vegas and I was being blackmailed.

Inside, there was a flier for something or another. No pictures, other than the ones on the flier.

I would imagine that the open rate of that piece of junk mail was extremely high. Well played, paper spammer. Well played.

This is a very common tactic used by savvy direct mailers. Not sure why you are calling them spammers though. However, dude should of put some kind of photo in there to stay congruent with the writing on the envelope.

It was a a tongue in cheek statement. From now on, nobody can reply to my posts until they have taken the five day course on understanding EBR's humor.

Is that an opt-in course, or can I just download it?

The question is, what would you DO with what was inside? Yes, getting an open rate is important, but would you feel let down and lied to like so many emails now???

e.g. - "You Just Made a Sale!", "Payment Received", etc.

BTW, I have video of your last Vegas trip. Send the usual amount to my offshore account or I'll release it as a WSO with PLR.

Pretty sad really, lol. But you know what's really funny? Despite his objection, calling junk mailers "paper spammers" is actually fairly accurate.

From a marketing standpoint, I love hearing about new ideas.

Can I ask what type of envelope it was? Was it a regular business envelope? A photo mailer?

Yes. The first key to direct mail is to get them to open it.

Actually, that is the second key. The first is to get them to NOT throw it away.

I have to say that's a very clever tactic - I've nearly forgotten about snail mail all together over the last couple years, everything is digital now!

Might have to go dust off my mailbox and see if I have any goodies from our local "spammers" .

Makes me wonder just what you did on your trip to Vegas.

Having passed his course, I'm actually wondering what he didn't do in Vegas.

And Brian ... you can't get blackmailed for what you do in Vegas anymore. It's against their tourism policy. :-)

It would be very interesting to see the response rate vs the open rate for that "subject line."

How many people would just look at it as another way to get people to open the envelope?

How many of these same people dislike misleading email subject lines ?

I had similar experience sometime ago and mine wasn't direct mail. It came straight to my cell phone with a number I could hardly reach. So I waved it off..

Am sure is just an experiment

I used that technique for some 20 years in the photo business. My mailing pieces included a printed-on-Kodak photo in a style I would be advertising in the mailer. On the outside was stamped, Photo Enclosed - Do Not Bend.

This seems so normal to me that it had not occurred to me other marketers would not know it.

I also would sometimes add other "stuff" to make it true lumpy mail. The success rate was phenomenal. I would often get a 20:1 sales to total mailing cost ratio on these mailings.

That's standard practice for savvy direct mailers - it should ensure pretty high open rates. It also goes to show that direct mail is far from dead, no matter how beleaguered the USPS might seem to us.

    Funny Post Brian,

Just like an email campaign. The object is first to get someone to open it. Interesting tip I think sometimes we get away from.
