Ripped off by an article buyer - what to do?

Hi I'm quite new to making money online and IM.

To start off, I offered my article-writing services on another similar IM-related website.

To make the long story short, I wrote 10 articles on weight loss (spent around 14 hours on and off writing them) for this guy, who was pretty impressed with my work and promised to have more projects with me. And then he doesn't pay me.

It's been 3 days now, and he is not responding to skype or email or anything. Thing is, I saw him post in that same forum that he's selling "10 weight loss articles" for around $8.00 profit total.

What do I do with people like this?! Any suggestions? Has anyone encountered similar situations such as this? I don't have enough "posts" on the other forum to leave a negative feedback on his profile.

I don't think there's much you can do about it. If anything, you can consider it a lesson learned. Always get paid before giving your product. Atleast, you didn't lose any money. Offer some services on here and abandon the other forum.

First thing I would do is take those articles and post them on Ezine and Articlebase. That way the guy can't say it is his content. I really don't think there is too much you can do about it.

I guess you can chalk it up as a lesson learned? Next time ask for money upfront.

LOVE the suggestion from Shannon! Then you are at least getting YOUR name out there with your articles.

In future try and only accept advance payments. This can be tricky if you're starting out as you don't have a reputation yet, but it's the only way you can protect yourself.

Now, in order to try and make some profit from this, why not offer the articles as a PLR pack? Add it to your signature and you might be able to recoup some of the time investment.

Apart from that, I guess you should work on your writing speed. 14 hours for 10 articles is quite a long time unless they are exceptionally long or you charge well above average rates. There are a few posts around the forum about writing quickly.

Hope you have better luck next time!

Greg, you know better than that.

To the original poster, send the guy an email stating that until payment is received, you retain the copyright. Tell him he has 24 hours to send payment or you turn them into a PLR pack and sell them to others to recoup the monies owed.

If he doesn't pay, sell them as PLR for $5-10 a set to as many people as will buy them.

Worth giving it a try, but I don't think selling it even if it is a plr would not be easy.

@jglopez you should have used freelancer sites so that you could have made sure of being paid.

    Since you haven't been payed...

Offer the same articles for less or give them away as samples on that forum.

Post them on you're own website and then issue him and everybody who buys from him a DMCA.

Contact the admin of that website and get him banned. You do have emails between you and him and the work to be done, right?

    Be creative.

I'm a jerk so I'd probably reply to his thread where he's selling them asking politely whether those are the same 10 weight loss articles I wrote for him that he has not paid for and advise him that it might be difficult to find someone dumb enough to buy stolen articles (we all know that's not true, but still).

If the articles are as good as you say they are then them as a PLR pack or retain them for your own usage.

In the future either ask for full payment upfront or a 50% retainer upfront.

Sometimes this happens...not saying it is right because clearly it isn't but at least you can still use the articles for other income producing opportunities.

    Respectfully,

A very hard lesson to learn. It's never nice to be cheated by someone you thought you could trust.

Move on, put it down as a lesson and go and sell those to someone else. It's your product, so you can do what you like with it.

Treat it as a lesson learnt!

In future, consider going thru services like elance.com to assure of payments.
Or charge 50% first & the rest, when the articles are done & the buyer is satisfied.
If they are not satisfied, offer rewriting until they are satisfied.

First off, I would contact him through his ad and find out what is going on. Next, I would make your clients pay a non refundable 50% deposit before you ever do any work for them. I get outlandish requests all the time for 200 articles or even just a few articles and when I email them back and tell them that they have to pay half up front I never hear from them again. It also protects against those that want to order content from you, then complain about it once you write it.

You have to get a deposit because your time is valuable. I only do projects for my regular clients with no deposit because they pay me, but most of them never had an issue with giving me 50% up front.

If you use paypal you are not protected from non payment, but if they pay you up front and you don't deliver they can ask for a refund from you and create a case.

Regarding this paypal thing as a payment method, has anyone getting paid and then after finished writing your article and submit to the paying party, they suddenly create a case on you?

I also write for hire, and write about 60 - 70 articles a week. I have been burned but I limit it.

I ask for 50% up front, and do not budge. This way I can only lose half, and since doing that I have never been ripped off.

Also, feel free to ask for references from your prospective buyers. You should supply references, but asking for them as well is one thing I learned that weeds out the you-know-whats.

Personally, I would offer the 10 Health and Weight loss articlesa as a 10 pack FRESH PLR pack, limit it to 50 copies or so, and get $3 to $5 a piece for the 10 packs.

Be upfront about why you are selling them, there are people on this very forum that would gladly take 10 limited run PLR articles for $3 to $5.

Then send skype and emails to the offending party reminding him that the property is yours, and he has no rights to sell.

And I have to say, if anyone on an IM forum did that to me, you had better believe everyone that would listen would hear about it (following TOS for that forum of course).

You can also use the "search" features in forums to find out every post he has made, and "quote" a response to his posts asking why he never paid you for the articles you contracted that he is now selling.

I would also contact anyone that you see in those posts and threads that purchased from him and alert him.

In the long run, he / she will reap what they sow, so you may just want to be more particular in the future, and move on.

But as someone who works full time writing for others, I get real steamed when I see this kind of crap.

I will PM you and find someone to use your services. I turn down work all the time because I am swamped.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Truly lots of super helpful people here on warrior! I can't thank everyone enough. Knowing that all of you sympathize makes me feel better.

I will definitely contact the admins of the other forum where I met this guy. I've already posted on his threads (looking for writers and selling articles) about him not paying me.

One last question though - I'm quite new to this. I don't understand what you mean by selling the articles as PLR for 5-10$? Does this mean I can sell all the articles at this price multiple times?

Yes ... first put them either on your blog or ezinearticles. Then sell them as a PLR package, which means Private Label Rights and sell them to as many people as you can for cheap. Some will rewrite them and some will use them as they are. In either case, they will no longer be unique and it won't matter much if he sells them or not. He won't get much for them.

I agree with Tina. At this point, you have full copyrights to your material. Definitely send him an email stating this and reminding him it is illegal to sell someone else's copy.

I also think you should notify the mods on that forum. I'm sure they don't want people around who are ripping off other members.

I know some have said to just write this off as a bad experience, however, I don't agree. It won't take you more than a few minutes to contact the client and the mods. If nothing comes of it, at least you'll know you stood up for yourself.

I really feel for you....that is so frustrating!

I have clients pay up front and offer a full refund if they are not satisfied. I have never had a client have an issue with this nor have I ever had to issue a refund.

Your time is valuable. It sounds like you worked really hard on those articles and I'm sorry this happened to you.

14 hrs on 10 articles ? Thats rather long. In 14 hrs you should produce roughly 6 articles per hr. 6x14=84 articles.

That was on and off. I was switching between writing and other stuff, so I didn't really get to time exactly how long I spent on the articles. I do remember spending the first 2 hours for 4 articles. Wow! Hope I could get to that level, producing 6 per hour! That's like being an article machine!

        500 words = 1 article I assume.

Well its easy to write 500 words in 10 minutes(or 6 articles an hr).

Just browse some authority websites on whatever niche you are writing about beforehand.

I personally prefer to have my guys write them for me for $1.50 per 500 words.

Well...how good were your articles? Would you say that if you sold these ten articles for 8 dollars - would you be able to sell one copy?

If you think that these articles could sell more than one copy...why are you writing articles and then selling to people? Why don't you write ten articles on different subjects; and then sell those 10 articles on the same forum as well?

Your profile doesn't say what country you are from. If you are from the U.S. you own the copyright to the articles and do what others in this thread have suggested.

In the future, get 50% up front and deliver the articles in a locked, no copy, no print, PDF file for the buyer's review and payment. When you are paid in full, send them the source files.

3 Things to Remember when Losing Weight.

Losing weight, as you can tell by the million-dollar industry that revolves around it, is not easy. There's so much information everywhere about different ways and approaches to losing weight that those starting out their research often get confused. There are so many details, scientific terms, and other complicated things to learn about when studying how everything works when one tries to lose weight. The intention of this article is to help out the beginner, or to remind the expert, about the 3 fundamental basics (yes, that was redundant, but not exaggerated) when one is trying to lose weight:

          Eat Less

It's no secret. Everyone knows it, but it's still so hard to do! Eating less goes against the nature of most humans to eat until they are full. Food is really, really good. Stopping a delicious meal half-way through your appetite is akin to torture. How do you do this? There are two steps to doing this - eat the right food, and eat the right AMOUNT of food. Eating the right food entails eating more fruits and vegetables and avoiding fried, processed, or greasy food. A good rule of thumb for eating the right amount of food is not to let yourself reach the point where you're already full. Just make sure that you eat enough (meaning you stop feeling like you're starving), then walk away from the food.

          Exercise more

Did it come as a surprise? I didn't think so! This is also pretty obvious. Exercising burns energy in the form of calories. More energy burnt means less energy that your body can convert to fat and, combined with "eat less," some of your fat stores burnt as well, since the body can't get enough energy from what you're eating. The problem most people have with exercise is consistency. People tend to put exercise on the "I'll do it if I have time" list. Not only that, sometimes it also gets filed under "I'll do it if I feel like it." This, more often than not, results in an insufficient exercise habit or worse - no exercise habit. Some food for thought regarding exercise: An intense 30 minute exercise during the day leads to you reaching the deep, restful sleep faster at night. This means that your sleep requirements could be reduced by as much as 1 hour! The next time you think that you have no time to exercise, think twice! 30 minutes of intense exercise could actually save you 1 hour of sleeping time!

It's not easy, but do it anyway.

If losing weight were easy, then nobody would be overweight. This last step to remember is something you can apply to everything else in life. The hard things in life are actually the things that are worth doing. When things get hard, what separates winners from the rest is that they don't quit. Yes, it's hard to wake up at 6am to run 20-minutes just before work. Yes, it's hard to have just one serving of that thick, juicy, melt-in-your-mouth steak. So what? Do it anyway. Doing only the easy things will not get you anywhere new.

There you go. Used in conjunction, these three steps will guarantee that you lose weight. Step 3 is where most people have difficulty, but at the end of the day, guess who's the person losing (or not losing) weight?

Every once in a while, a newbie article writer will be burned by an unscrupulous 'buyer' anywhere online, whether it be a freelancing website, DP, and so on. It doesn't happen all the time though, so please don't take it to heart.

May I ask how much you agreed to be paid for the articles?

Also, with respect to the other people telling you that you own the copyright - they're correct of course, but there's the LAW and then there's ENFORCING THE LAW.

Also, if your work makes it overseas then enforcing copyright is a true waste of your time.

And to those folks who admonish you and say it's a "lesson" - nuts to that! I've been at this a long time and I still get hosed every once in a while, it's just the nature of the game.

I have a suggestion to set things right with you. Like I asked, let me (and the rest of this thread) know how much you were to be paid.

I will then donate a few dollars or maybe pay for all of them) and then I propose you give them all away to folks on this forum. A gift.

You'll get paid and the "thief" will have an asset with NO VALUE

Will that stop them, nope, but it's not a bad idea in my opinion - LOL

    Happy Groundhog day.

I had a similar thing happen to me a couple of years back with someone here on the WF. It turned out that he was doing the same kind of thing to a number of writers and the way you describe it it sounds like the same guy.

I managed to cause him more trouble than he would have made from the articles themselves but still didn't get paid. I learned the lesson that a few of the other writers have told you about and that's to get at least 50% upfront.

If you're a good writer, and it sounds as though you are, then you will always get good quality clients over the long term. Yes, it can be a slog but so can writing for a thieving scumbag who doesn't pay you!

      Hi,
I'm sorry to hear that you were ripped off, but you've had some excellent advice here.

Thank you for posting one of your articles, I think it's great - you have a good conversational style and I'm sure if you offer your articles as a plr pack you'll soon make the money you lost and more. I think you'd priced yourself a bit low anyway so you deserve to make more for your work.

      Good luck

      Susan

        Thanks Nigel and Susan!

Hmm, too bad I don't have the $20 yet required to post on the area where I can sell these here as a PLR pack. That's ok though, I'll just find another way!

Here's a video that I found really helpful. In this case, I'm sure you don't have a whole lot of "legal ground" to stand on, but you could easily send out the "scary e-mail" or better yet, if you can get this guy's mailing address, send out a "scary letter" via registered mail. This will probably be enough to get paid for your work. In the future, definitely get payments first.
to find the video, google search "kicking legal's ass" (it's the first site to show up) and watch it all the way through.

      Hope this helps!

I once wasted many days writing POKER articles and poker-web content. I translated them from English to German., it was a hell of a work with all those special gambling terms.

At the end the guy owed be about €700....i still dont understand how i could have been so stupid to deliver work without seeing money first. Ever since i am very paranoid and USUALLY charge in advance (or at least partially in advance). Well..at least i learned something...

Add: Be careful of DP forum etc...some of the cheapest people on there and quite some scammers too.
