Are Videos Losing You Money

Most marketers are putting out videos on their sales pages and these seems a good marketing ploy BUT WHY!!! are they putting them out with no controls.

Here in the UK we have what are called Pound Shops where Yep!! You've guessed it. Everything costs £1. If I buy any dvd from there it has every control I need so why are these GURUS (and I use the term very loosely) putting out videos with no controls.

You can't even tell how long you've got to sit there and watch it.

What I think should be basic - Any more suggestions would be welcome

1 - On/Off > I can live with autoplay but I'd rather have control myself
2 - Pause > So I can go and make a coffee halfway through the hour long pitch
3 - Fast Forward > If I have to switch the video off I can pick back up where I left off
4 - Rewind > If I don't catch what the superguru said I can skip back and listen to it again
5 - Timeline > I really would like to know how long I may have to sit there

A couple of extras here are volume control although I have that on my speakers and headphones so it's not that important and full screen capability although again it's nice but not too important

Myself and quite a few of my net friends now just switch off if a video has no controls.
I got an email this morning from a very well known and respected marketer. I went to have a look to see if it was something I might be interested in >> NO CONTROLS - SWITCH OFF

Please Vote above

Just my thoughts

A video with no controls and no idea how long it is a definite hit of the back button.

Plus if the 'video' turns out to be some guy reading out slides that appear on the screen, yep I'll go straight to the back button or surf somewhere else.

I think that's the point, they don't want you to be able to control them. They want it to be you watching and them trying to sell you with their amazing sales tactics, right now! If you click off you're not the prospect they want.

Or they simply wanted to go to toilet and couldn't find a pause button or any indication of how long they were supposed to sit there.

If it comes down to a choice between sitting there and wetting myself so I can hear an hour long sales pitch, or thinking "Sod that" and just going to toilet... well you know which I'm choosing.

I know that....it smells of desperation to me - not a great way to convince potential clients IMO.

The thing that gets me is that I like videos but the very least I want to know is how long I've got to sit there.

I had another one this morning which was basically the guy talking you through the sales page that was printed underneath word for word. A good thing - Maybe for those that don't like reading but again - No Controls - SWITCH OFF

Yeah I'm with you on that one, I just hate it when I run into one with no controls and just hit the back button when I run into one.

I think videos are great for marketing strategy.

You kinda see what's inside of it...

    Mark

    And your point is????

Oops!!! It looks like Mark's post has been pulled so the statement that I posted doesn't really make any sense now.

Never mind. I think you get the gist that it wasn't really contibuting anything to the thread and ----- NO It wasn't Mark Thompson whose post is below this one.

Too many Marks on the forum LOL

I've lost count of the videos I've turned off because I had something else scheduled and didn't know how long was left.

Another thing I hate is when the marketer says, watch this short 17 minute video and it turns out to be about an hour...

Although I hate the videos myself, in all but 1 of the niches I've tested them in they've out-pulled non-autoplay videos with controls (and in most cases long form sales letters as well).

In 2011 I've decided to start adding controls to my new video sales letters, simply since I think it's the right thing to do (even if I have to sacrifice a few sales).

      Hi Ryan

In the quote above you say that they've outpulled non-autoplay with controls

It would be interesting to know if you've looked at your stats on these sites to see how many people clicked away within a short time frame (Lost Potential Customer)

        Hi Eliot,

You are not their target market and by sticking to their tested approach, they keep you out of their funnel, which is exactly what they are aiming for and why they filtered you out in the first place.

Did you make a post on a forum criticising their actions?

Put those two things together and you'll realise that they are making money, they're not 'losing' money, you're not a potential customer in their eyes and they do know exactly what they are doing.

Don't like the initial marketing? Then you wouldn't have liked the product either, or the rest of their marketing approach further down the funnel.

Did you really think all of these marketers were stupid and were throwing profits away?
