Not sure where to start with promoting my blog

Hi all, hopefully I can get some tips from you as to where to start.

I have an autoblog with the aim of earning money via commission junction as a web host affiliate and I assume at this stage I need to improve traffic. From what I have read so far this seems to be done by creating backlinks and article submissions etc There are a lot of posts in the special offers forum and hiring section of this site but the more I read the more confusing it becomes; almost information overload.

Does anyone have any basic tips to get me going in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi radhika, do you mean advertising with a search engine or attempting to get high on a search engine?

Well I guess more good quality traffic the better regarding earnings? I currently receive around 500 unique visits a day; about 6 clicks a day. Where should I start to increase these numbers and hopefully sales?

Start by first pick a keyword do some research "google keyword tool" pick a keyword with at least 2000 search a month and up. Do a search for your keyword pick a keyword with 100K and down realvent seaches, then use it in every article. Then post articles ezine and others, blogs and forums drive that taffic back to your site and build that keyword at the same time. hope that helps.

    Hi Pezerinno

500 unique visits per day is pretty good traffic! Where are these coming from at the moment?

Slightly off your original topic here but are you building a list from your visitors? I'm not sure if that fits in with your business model but once a visitor is on your list you can start marketing to them on a regular basis and making sales that way.

Even at 10% opt in rate you could have a list of over 1,500 in a month. You can then drive your subscribers back to specific blog posts and ask them to use Facebook, twitter to start sharing your posts which in turn will drive even more traffic to your site.

Seems an easier way to go to me seeing as you already have enough traffic to start your own viral traffic explosion.

Post articles on article directories like ezinearticles, and also social media bookmarking sites like hubpages and squidoo. These articles should have the keywords you are targeting, and link back to the articles on your site.

    Thanks for your replies everyone.

LibbyC, I'm not sure where they're coming from actually, sorry I'm so new to this. Most visitors are from the states. When I check awstats it seems to be from blogs or rather random websites. I'm not building 'lists' as I'm not sure how one goes about doing so. I wasn't aware that visitors left enough information for me to do that.

      Hi Pezerinno

500 visitors a day just seems like an awful lot of visitors to be getting with no idea of where they are coming from.

You can see they come from random blogs, but the question is why? Are people linking to a particularly good piece of content perhaps?

If you can see that one particular source of traffic eg: one blog is working well then you can focus your efforts on boosting that as much as possible to get additional visitors.

Re building a list from your visitors, your visitors won't leave enough information to build a list without you asking them to leave it.

You do this by signing up for a list building service like Aweber or GetResponse then adding the forms they give you to your site.

      Here's my take:

Either you do get 500 unique visitors a day in which case you've now got way enough traffic to work on:
      • building a list & converting that list to sales (if that's what you want to do)
      • or converting visitors to clicks/sales
There is no point putting more work into generating traffic if your visitors are all leaking out from your page.

What exactly are your visitors clicking on? 6 clicks from 500 visitors may be an amazing click through rate or a really bad one depending on the offer.

OR your stats aren't accurate and you're only getting a fraction of the traffic - in which case yes, you do a traffic strategy.

I'm leaning towards the second one as most peeps who say they are 'new to this' would be struggling to get 5 unique visitors to their site per day, let alone 500

But hey if you're right then you're the traffic whiz kid here, so we should be asking you for your secrets

One more question (lots of questions!) ... what exactly is an 'autoblog'?
When I first read your post I thought you meant a blog about cars (girls huh?!) but now I suspect it's something else.

I prob should have asked this in the beginning because if an autoblog is some kind of low quality scraped content deal then it's a different ball game as you'll probably need a huge amount of traffic to convert.

      Anyway, hope that helps...
      Libby

PS: Poor you, you ask for traffic strategies and you get this rave from me!! LOL

        Hi Libby,

Thanks for your reply and sorry to the delay in mine. I'm not sure how accurate awstats are but that it what they're telling me. Within this months CJ stats it shows 50 impressions with 29 clicks. I'm interested in increasing clicks to visitors but how do I best go about doing so? It is an automatic blog about web hosting; I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a link here.

awstats is not very accurate, if you use certain back link building tools you will get 100's of unique visitors that are just bots.

What would be a more accurate monitoring tool? Also can someone clarify what an impression is? I assumed it was when someone viewed an advert but there is a substantial disparity between my impression count (within cj) and my unique visitor count (assuming accurate).

            Thanks.

I have installed google analytics to see what that has to say and whether it tallies with awstats.

If you have articles on your site post the links on social sites such as twitter, digg, and so forth. If you have them posted on submission sites do some social backlinking to that article page on the submission site to get a backlink web going.

As far as stats, if your blog is on Wordpress you should be able to check actual hits and other stats right there in your admin center.

Thanks for your advice. It is a wordpress site; where exactly are the stats located in the admin area?

Ok so it looks like awstats was way off as Google Analytics states I received 3 unique visitors yesterday I'm still unclear why the impression count within Commission Junction is much higher than Google Analytics?
