Uh... hate to say this but in both cases that giant header has just got to go.

They're both OK. But seriously, you need a new header!!!

Version A looks a bit scary to me

I would definitely go with version B...

Header too big. Just make it smaller. The second version is easier in the eyes

The header might be working for your clients and potential clients. And the style of your site might be working too. If that is the case there is no need to change them.

Your header and your site design are on the old school side, nothing wrong with that, especially if that works for you and the type of client you are looking for.

If the choice is only those 2, then ver7 is better IMO. The white on black is kind of startling to see.

Version 2 definitely is better than 1 - the height of the header could probably be cut in half if you put the face and loyal writer on the left or right and put the text you have below loyal writer on the opposite side and still have the same effect but use up less valuable real estate.

I agree with the others about the headers being a little large.

As per your question. I found the second site to be easier on the eyes and the first
site scared me when I arrived so I say site #2 is nicer.

    Have a Great Day!

I would suggest making the header smaller (as others have). However version B definitely blends better with the rest of your site.

What you don't want is your visitors attention constantly drawn away from what you're offering, which I believe version A does (it did for me at least).

definitely reduce the header's high by half, and
maybe get rid of the face and use a graphic of
a pen and paper. that would jump out into the
mind's eye as "writing". the picture initially made
me think of uncle jesse from the duke's of hazard:p

try to go with a light green or blue header as they
are very relaxing colors. also think about getting
the text in the 4 boxes looking less jagged. just not
'pro' enough. first impressions can make or break!

        Define "nicer"...

Version B is easier on the eyes. The reversed image is a bit harsh.

Header - Reduce the size. You don't need that big 100px height picture. It doesn't add anything.

Headline - Make it more noticeable. Maybe something like: "100% SEO Quality Content For You" or "I Write 100% Quality, Unique, and SEO Killer Content For Your Website"

Buttons - Make them look more uniform so that visitors can see price differences between plans. Make them images so that they only have to click the entire area to go to that plan.

The White writing on the black is hard on the eyes and is an instant turn off. The one thats lighter in color is easier on the eyes and is more appealing, but I do agree with the general idea that the header needs modifications.
The head seems a little out of place, you could put it off the the side or replace it with a book or something more writerish.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with both Eric and Sarah here...

Sam is selling a very specialized kind of writing, and using his long experience as one of his differentiators. In this case, I think the cartoon is appropriate.

In my mind as a prospect, a generic pen-and-paper or book image doesn't say 'SEO specialist', it says 'literary' and generic 'writer'. But that's just me...

Rearranging and shrinking the header would put more of the real content above the fold, though.

    I'd say version 2...

But I'd also ask these questions first:

    1. What is the main objective of the page?

    2. Have you run a split test to see which version accomplishes that objective?

Sometimes these things can be very tricky...only a test can reveal the truth.

    All the best,

Ok Guys, I see that most of you think that the header is too big. Basically I agree with that. What would you think about this version: http://loyalwriter.com/ver8 ?

      Better.

In the interest of symmetry, though, I'd move the title/tagline up so that it's more centered horizontally.

Which would let you shrink the header even more without losing the effect of white space (gray, in this case).

I agree with John, the new version is better than the 2nd but moving the title/tagline higher in the header will improve it and also not have so much blank gray space.

Much better indeed - I also agree with John, centering the title/tagline up a bit may make thing appear a tad nicer.

On a slightly related note, and this may just be me, but the font used for "Plan A, Plan B, etc.." bellow the header is a bit jarring. When I look directly at them it gives me a bit of an unfocused sensation of strain in my eyes. Once again, could just be me, but a smoother font may help .

Header is just way too large. I would re-size the header. It will certainly be more effective once you resize it.

I would also change the header - too big and the amount of actual imagery within it doesn't look right with the size.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the grey colouring to the site, just looks a little drab to me. That's just my opinion though!
