Most of us go to Youtube when we want to search for any video or tutorial or any answer.

There are many video hosting sites like dailymotion, glumbert.org, blip.tv, metacafe, viddler, myspace, videojug, flicker and many others... Why do we prefer Youtube?

    1. The most videos.
    2. Habit.
    3. No ads before your chosen video starts. (HATE that)
    4. It rocks?

    • Agree about the ads thing. Definitely more videos than on other sites, good rating system, the best comments, great featured videos algorithm. Better search features.

Ya, have to disagree with number 3. If a video is really popular it has video ads before the real video starts. Been surfing youtube today and found a few like this, just to remind me it happens. I think this is one of the options they give you if you want to put ads on your popular video.

But not every video, of course.

To answer the OP, I think it's pretty obvious that youtube is the most popular and biggest video site in the world, and in the top 10 sites in the world, period, so if you want to find something, you are most likely to find it there, just for those reasons. Not always, just most likely.

You're right - YouTube Partner videos do have video ads on....I was thinking of one of the other sites, I think it's Metacafe where Metacafe puts a 30 second ad prior to EVERY video. That really p***s me off.

Most other video sites are feeding off of Youtube. A lot of sites just embed Youtube videos and thats it. Youtube is also owned by Google so you can bet when you search for something you are going to find what you want.

I hate dodgy home made site searches.

    r u serious

Other sites are fine for posting your videos to show to friends, embed in your web site, create products, etc.

When you want to find something to watch in an obscure niche (learn swahili in 3 minutes or less) you go to youtube. The most visitors, the most videos, the most traffic...

You are right. When we want to upload videos to share with friends, we don't go to Youtube.

But for business purpose, Youtube is the first choice. Of course we upload them at other sites too sometimes. But Youtube is kinda must.

Well, Google owns YouTube, and most of us go to Google when we want to search for anything else. Doesn't seem so strange to me.

  • YouTube just seems to be the most popular right now. Although I hate all the commercials they make you watch. But it is nice when YouTube videos show up in the Google search results. I guess it's just convenient.

As Caliban says, Google owns it, which probably accounts for something I heard the other day that it gets around 95% of video traffic.

That makes for a good reason to use it.
