Can I use sub-domain?

I am a newbie in IM. I have a domain registered and hosted. Now if I am going to promote affiliate products,

1. can I use subdomains? my site is IANA — Example domains and test.example.com as my subdomain..
2. If I choose the low competitive KW, can I still rank well using sub-domain? (ofcourse SEO /content etc.. plays a major role). I want to know if there are any major drawbacks using a subdomain.

  • It is best to have a fresh domain, but with extra work you can use a subdomain, but for the sakes of $8, it is probably worth spending the extra $8.
  • subdomains get treated like separate entities from the main domain, so you'd end up having to do double of the necessary seo. Better put these products into subfolders than subdomains, that way the domain authority transfers to your inner pages more easily as well.

      So when we go with the subdomain, SEO should be done for both the domains? what if the main domain is not related to the niche that I took..

  • although subdomain sites treated as a standalone site, for marketing reasons its best to have the site on a main domain.
  • The degree to which you can use subdomains is dependent on your owning the domain above it, the host, your ability and/or the domain configuration software(such as cpanel). Most hosts allow this automatically, some charge for it, and some don't allow it.

  • Look at amazon.com! They have thousands of keywords and they still use 1 domain, but why? It is not because a huge site "weighs" more - it is because it does not really pay off to have more domains than 1, provided the theme of keywords is the same. If you have a sub-domain you would think because you would have the domain name like [keyword].[domain].com it would rank better but it does not because the SEs see that as a completely different domain and they check if they have the same IP address! To overcome this you would have to register with different hosting companies (you would then get different IPs). This is a lot of work and more cost and it just does not balance out if you just go the easy way of having a sub directory (which has your keywords enclosed). I would go for [www].[my domain with main keywords].com/[my category]/[my product or keyword]. If you want to have this pages ranked at the top of Google you need to provide link juice with keyword rich links to it (high PR). That works best.
