Popups during a vist or when leaving?

Has anyone tested as when is the best time to have your popup appear.

Many copywriting books tell you there should not be anything to interrupt a customer that is reading your sales page. That is where a popup appearing and few seconds after someone arrives at your site could be distracting.

Has anyone tested that given the same offer you get more opt ins when the popup appears when someone is about to leave your site?

Thanks

How about no pop-ups at all? I use pop-up blocker all the time + with one or two dhtml pop-ups, I just close them.

Yes, in my test results, Never... That's why the pop-up blocker was invented... they are annoying, people dislike them, and simply close them.

Now, the latest are the 'slide in' ads... which you can do either when someone arrives, or when they try to leave...

I'm not saying that these new slide in ads don't convert, because I wouldn't know because I don't use them... so these are just MY OPINIONS!!!

The most annoying to me are the latest ones that when trying to exit the site, they stop you, and confuse you with a yes / no alert, (which locks the browser, so you can't go anywhere or simply click the X no less...) that takes precious time just to read which to choose... yes, or no... to get the hell out of there...

    They are all bad IMO.

If you have an Opt-in form, design it into your main sites theme
... don't FORCE people... unless you're desperate... that is. Finesse is the best way to your customer's wallet...

What I meant was the slide in ones, not the older style popups.

Yes I know they can be annoying especially the ones that do lock your browser and you have to click "ok" or something before you can leave. I see many use them so perhaps they do work though.

Opinions don't really matter, its what works that matters when your in business, they are leaving and may never return to your site anyway.

But offering them something free of value may get them to opt in and you can resell to them later.

Bingo! People say they "hate" popups, yet they opt in on popups all the time. Pay attention to what they do, not what they say they like.

Glad someone here knows what they're talking about.
