Wordpress - Search engines

I installed WordPress to some site's recently but when i login, in the top left of the screen it says "Search engines blocked".

Why is this? When i hover the mouse button over it says you are asking search engines not to index the content. I never set it to this. It doesn't make sense that this is the default setting.

Not sure why that would have been on by default, but it's easily turned off by going to Settings > Privacy, and choosing to allow search engines.

It is a feature that is on by default in the latest update of WordPress.
I can only suppose that it's on by default to allow testing of page layouts or whatever on new sites and not have them picked up by the search engines.

It's easy to forget to turn it off, however!

I had a couple of sites that I puit up and did not realize that this was a default setting in WP. One of them took me almost 6 weeks before I realized what was happening.

But now I look every time in the privacy settings to make sure I have make visible checked.

It's for the whole site. Click on the text, it's actually a link. It'll bring you to a page that will let you unblock them.

Johnny is right. That is a default setting that you can easily turn off.

It's actually a good thing to have this setting as a default for new blogs. The reason is that when you first setup you typically have nothing but a "Hello World" post and a mostly blank "About" page. Then as you start posting content you'll be sending out pings and potentially calling attention to your site before it's ready.

You don't want the SE bots to show up before your site is properly optimized and ready to give a warm welcome. So even if your default is to allow spiders at the beginning, you should switch it off until you are fully ready with permalinks, sitemaps, meta data and so on optimized.

Is this function selectable for separate pages or just the whole site or nothing?
