My WordPress Blog Crashed After Latest Upgrade

I just installed a new WordPress blog on one of my sites.

My host, HostGator, has fantastico set to install 3.0.3. When I did the installation the admin bar said, "Update To 3.0.5". Since it is a new blog with nothing on it I went ahead and clicked for the upgrade.

After the upgrade unzipped and installed it said everything went fine. I clicked on the admin link in the left hand column resulted in a error in line 22. It looked like some kind of database error.

I uninstalled and re-installed 3.0.3 and didn't do the upgrade. Now everything works fine. Except the fact 3.0.3 has some security flaw and I need to upgrade to at least 3.0.4.

Happened to me, might not happen to you.

    what is your error message?

    If it is
Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.
then you have to delete the .maintainence file in root folder

Honestly, I've noticed that since WP 3.x Fantastico installtions have been really flakey. There's a hundred reasons not to use it but with the speed factor I'd used it regardless until now.

There's all kinds of issues with plugin installations, site and plugin updates and so on through Fantastico installed sites so I'd recommend a manual install from here on.

It takes a little longer but the resulting more stable sites are well worth it.

    Dennis, hi,

I've never used Fantastico but I believe some of these 1-click installations install a few plugins at the same time.

If that's the case deactivate all your plugins before doing the upgrade and reactivate them one by one after the upgrade. That way you'll be able to find the one causing the problem and remove it.

If it's not a plugin it's probably a theme, so activate the default WordPress theme (Twenyten) before doing the upgrade too.

    Cheers,

    Martin.
