Is it essential to use an autoresponder when all I need is to send a PDF in response to receiving an email?

It's not essential but it's a great way to carry on communication with subscribers, which can help to generate more sales or traffic to your site.

People are used to instant now. How long you going to make them wait? I use e-junkie for, what is it, 5 or 6 bucks a month, and the download is instant and I don't have to monitor my email.

Don't send me anything as attachment if I sign up to your list.
Send me to a download page. I hate getting attachments

Perhaps I didn't ask the question properly.

Do I need an autoresponder or is there an alternative method to sending a PDF upon receipt of an email request?

And I am telling you no matter it's autoresponder or other method - do NOT send it in email as an attachment. Send an email with a link in it to the download page.

If "email request" means that you tell people to send you an email to an address that you gave them... a simple "vacation reply" type of setting can provide the download link/url.
It doesn't look very professional and, most importantly, you are not building a list.

Well, you are asking the wrong question.

If you have an AR (autoresponder, like getresonse, aweber, imnicamail etc.) there is NO "email request". - Explain what is an email request and how do you receive it?

Obviously, while using the same words we think about very different things. So, it's your turn to explain what is, according to you:
        - an autoresponder
        - an email request

According to the rest of us, we have a list created at an AR service > we get the optin form for it > we put it on a squeeze/optin page > people submit the form with their data (name/email) > they arrive to a thankyou page...

from here it could go different ways, depending on single or double optin
        - single - after submitting they get the download on the thankyou page
        - double - on thankyou page you tell them to go to their Inbox and click on the confirmation link in the email - then they get to the download page

Now, tell me, where the "email request" will fit in the process above?

If you want to conduct a professional look in your business then yes when you recieve a request for information via your squeeze page or an email request have that email put into your autoreponder and have the autoresponder send out the download link. That way you will have the email in your data base or list so you can market to them again

              Thanks for that Gary.

My query with the autoresponder was whether it is essential. I'm not using if for list building.

The truth is, it is for demo purposes.

I'm writing a sales letter, the reader will supply name and email address to receive an instant PDF document.

Given that I'm not list building, I was looking for other options to deliver the PDF instantly.

Okay if you are not using your AR for list building then get a vacation responder in your email account as mentioned earlier something like "thanks for your (interest or inquirery) for the information you requested please go here"and send the person to a download page on your website to get the product.
It would save a lot of time answering emails!!!!!!

I would still use the AR to get the customer name and email then it is saved in a data base just name the campaign freeinfo or something

I've just signed up for ListWire.

It's free, so at least I can play!

WTF! He just explained everything for you in detail! I would say it was pretty helpful.

I would use an autoresponder, and in the "welcome email" you include the download link to the PDF file and then continue to send emails promoting a product.
