Quick Request: What In Your Opinion Makes A Website "Sticky"?

Hi,

I hope you can brainstorm with me

I have an offline prospect who needs as many ideas as possible for making their site "sticky"...and by sticky, I mean...what features and functions of their website will get their visitors returning again and again...?

I have my own ideas, but I'd really appreciate your input.

Please be as conservative and/or whacky as you wish. No rules.

Thanks in advance.

Your friend,
Steve

  • Giving stuff away free always works, as well as enabling visitor interaction of some sort, contests, coupons, great content...

those all work, but I'm sure these were on your list too, Steve?

    • Providing information on whatever the niche is, that both entertains them and educates them at the same time.

Nothing better than learning about something you like and enjoying it at the same time.

    • Coupons.

There you go. I hadn't thought of that, Karen!

      A million thanks

      Best wishes,
      Steve

  • Damn you, Rinnert. I mean it. Go get a job or something and leave some of the snappy comebacks to those of us who can't just hang around the forum at all hours waiting to pounce on easy ones like this. I'm really considering sending a squadron of my finest flying monkeys your way. This is your only warning.

    • Site subject area content that is useful to the person returning. Enough of it that you can't go through it all in one sitting.

A consumable product or a portion that is consumable.

Authentic interaction on a relatively real time basis with the site owner. Honest human interaction where the returning visitor can see that action has been taken.

    • Easy?

      I'm not easy fella.

How's it going, Jon? Good I trust.

      Kind regards,
      Steve

  • Daily specials. Throw one deal up as their facebook status daily with a link to the site for the whole list of daily specials.

If the prospect runs TV ads, once they are shot put them on the website to let customers vote for their favorite. Only put the winners on TV. This has been really popular for us, and has built in market research.

The only sites I revisit are ones with exceptional content or exceptional tools/services.
  • 1. Discussion - social - user content
    2. Games
    3. regularly updated interesting content
    4. Tools
    5. If it makes them money to use it
  • Hey Steve,

You've already got some great replies and although I can't top Suzanne's comment above, I think having a community in the form of a Forum or Blog commenting or even Ning like interface will help if applicable to your client's website.

Also, daily specials or coupons that have been mentioned above is a good idea.

But then again, add what suzanne has said above and you wouldn't need a whole lot of replies here.

    • Honestly, for your own website, I think your personality in your writing is what makes it sticky. You can be informative yet still be you. That's why bloggers get commenters. That's why people get fans and their content re-tweeted.

I think part of the reason why Google has decided to pull out the hunchback to re-crank their algorithm is because people are tired of seeing the same robotic sounding junk online.

      It's boring.

There's really nothing new under the sun. The information is all the same, but how you say it is what resonates with your readers. On your blog, your website...that's your business. Literally.

  • This is kind of "sticky" ... Contests are always good... it doesn't have to be anything to do with the company's actual product. It could be something like an ipod giveaway featuring the company's logo: Custom iPods | MP3 and MP4 Players | Branded iPods | Click Now!

  • Generally speaking: unique and engaging content. Specifically in my niche: a personal touch - giving visitors friendly feedback, showing empathy and most of all showing that you are human and not a computerized algorithm.
  • *Social discussions
*Free stuffs like blogs list or any other
    *Gaming and movies discussion
will definetly bring the visitors again and again.

    • Hi Steven,

since it's an offline client, I assume you either have a narrow region or are targeting a very specific market.

Any resources along those lines that people would want to look up more than once:

      - calender of local events
      - directory of useful addresses/web sites (related to content, if possible)
      - current discounts in local shops
      - special offers in the region
      - a list of lunch menu specials of local restaurants/bars (updated daily)

Think stuff that people look up regularly (entertainment, food, medical care, important phone numbers, events, ...).

      Cheers,

      Regine
  • Just be sure they are entertained. Do some giveaways. Articles should be written to entertain them.
  • Regular supply of needed, timely and fresh content makes a site sticky!
  • Creating RSS feeds and putting up compelling offers to sign-up ie discounts and then updating it with high quality (and entertaining if possible) content. for their customers and prospects.

adding a login with some useful software will also help if it's applicable to the market.
  • Hi, what about some link to great free softwares? I found exceptional softwares in the web, like for videos or for managing ftp uploading. What about a free gift you wrote or music. What about subliminal messages, on the screen and a link to the software, and I guess not too much information, there's an overload of info i can't get over it. Anyway, also look at the colors, nice and relaxing. Pink is great and also proven to convert....you don't believe me? read a book called flipnosis.
Bye for now, I hope to be helpful to someone

  • In a word... FUN.

  • bare nekkid wimen covered in honey?

    moving on...

Depends on what the site is about to some degree.

People need a reason to come to the site in the first place:
    information
    entertainment
    save money
    advice
Try and find new ways to give them more of the same. New helpful articles, more coupons, fun contests, forums, Q & A, videos.

Sometimes tying posts into current events or upcoming holidays draws people back.
  • Naked women, guys getting kicked in the nuts, fat people dancing... That's your bread and butter right there.
  • Good content with an opportunity to subscribe to your feed. Posting often because people will find it boring or think it's dead. Reply to comments. All of these things will make your blog sticky.

    • People always LOVE giveaways...and we all know as marketers that this is true...
