How to tell if a domain has been banned before I buy it.

I buy a lot of domains and know a few ways to check if a domain has been banned. Does anyone know a surefire way to tell if a domain has been banned?

Thanks,
Jenny

I presume you mean blacklisted by Google? I think if you do a search in Google with "site:domainname.com" and nothing is returned there is a pretty good chance that the site has been removed from their index.

It is also possible to get a site relisted, take a look here:

      Hi Aaron,
That's one of the tools I use, but you know, for every domain I've bought it always says the same thing. The problem, I guess, is that you don't know if the domain was actually used or if it was just parked somewhere and never made into a website.

Oftentimes it is difficult to tell whether a domain name is banned in the search engine or simply penalized by the search engine. Or, perhaps the domain name is neither banned, nor penalized. It could be, you just managed to screw up your site. Let's look at all of the possibilities and explore how to tell whether or not a domain name is banned.

If the domain name does not show up in the search results but there are search results then there may be an issue with that domain name. For example, if the domain name does not appear, but the domain name is highlighted or shows up in bold on other sites in the search results, there most likely is a problem with that domain name.

To investigate a domain further at Google, let's look at what Google returns when we perform a site: search at Google. For example, if you go to Google and search for "site:www.domain.com" and then "site:domain.com" and Google comes back with "Your search - site:www.domain.com - did not match any documents," the site most likely is banned at Google.

I think you can check it out first before making any deals with the owner. That is the best way for you to know if the site is banned or not.

Wow, everyone's help has been fantastic - thanks for all the links!!!
      This is what I found...

      Registrar History:
      2 registrars
      NS History:
4 changes on 4 unique name servers over 9 years.
      IP History:
9 changes on 9 unique name servers over 7 years.
      ---------------
The historic thumbnail showed only 4 pages in 2006
      Wikipedia:
      0 pages
      Domain Status:
      Deleted And Available Again
      --------------
      Everything on Blacklist.org was OK
      --------------
I did the site:domain.com search and it did come up with 'did not match any documents.

So with everything shown here, what would you say? It was 4 pages 5 years ago.

There are many black list sites that come up on a list when you imput a domain into this tool and press "go", and one of my sites which comes up quite nicely in the Google search engine is black listed on two of the many many black list sites that come up when you imput your site. So being black listed on a couple of the sites on a list that comes up apparently does not affect your site.

How good is this tool for checking a domain that a person wants to purchase?

How do you read the results you get?

Can you give me a black listed domain so I can imput it into this tool and see what a real black listed domain looks like?

Hey guys , what if you purchase an expired domain - you do the search for domain in Google and you get no results - but you type in the domain and it is live.

Is it very difficult to get a domain active again if it was ever banned by Google?

    Thanks,

This is interesting. I don't think it should affect you if the domain has expired. I thought domains started fresh after the site is no longer live. Hmmmm. I will need to do more investigating.

thanks for the helpful links. i've never purchased a domain from someone, but i guess it's good to do this with 'new' domains, bc you never know if they have previously been owned!

I've never bought a domain from someone, I always buy expired domains., but you can still get an expired domain that has been banned. I always check for domains at http://www.domaintools.com/bulk-check/. You can tell if a domain has been previously owned.

I checked a site that I JUST bought from godaddy about 9 months ago (brand new) and a site that I KNOW got a banned letter 4 months ago. and the results were flip flopped.

It told me my new site was banned and the banned site was ok. Am I missing something?

I spent many hours today trying to find a good tool that could help with this, but they are all defective.

Those tools are created for present sites, but are not made to tell you if prospective domains you are going to buy had problems.

How can I find out if the domain I am going to purchase has past history problems such as being banned or penalized etc.?
