How long did it take you to build a list of 50k?

I'm aware that this question won't apply to 90% of people reading it, but if you've built a list of 50k or more online (in any market), would you mind sharing how long it took you to get there?

Appreciate your insights

Regards,

Nick

My lists are considerably beyond that, but the fastest ways I found to build up lists quickly in any niche is to buy targeted leads, send solo ads to ezines, or submit articles to relevant ezine publishers.

Does this method require submitting an article to a list? or Ezine publishers means an online ezine site, like eza?

Does submitting articles to ezine publishers mean to their autoresponder so their list gets it?

does ezine also mean to a list in that niche? or just an eza type site, where people submit articles in that niche ?

and myob, are you on safe-swaps.com ? do you do many swaps there?

There are many other methods for building a list.

But what I do is have my writers submit articles directly to targeted ezine publishers and sometimes to EZA. Ezine publishers send our articles out to their subscribers as part of their newsletter or online publication.

We do not submit articles to any "lists" or any other article directories besides EZA.

We have many different marketing channels, but just for quickly building a list, those methods I mentioned are very effective, powerful and fast.

We do not do any ad swaps.

The first list I built to 50K took me about 3-4 years. That one was tough cause it was a niche for a physical product. I added people to the list rapidly, but I always had a hard time keeping people on the list. It was kind of a one and done product and not really something that people care to hear about on a regular basis.

so you don't do solo ads? as that is what a solo ad is?

EZA is not "an online ezine site".

It's called "Ezine Articles" because it's a content depository of articles for ezines. It isn't itself an ezine.

Journalists write "newspaper articles"; online marketers write "ezine articles". It's actually no more complicated than that.

So for those with lists of about 50,000 subscribers, do you then earn anywhere near $50K per month from those lists: assuming the common guru touted $1 per subscriber per month?

I think you need to take into account the quality of your list vs the quantity (readiness to buy) of subscribers.

The questions aint that much off topic, they are related to increasing the list size, making it upto 50k.

I'm just about to 50,000 subscribers.

It took 1 and 1/2 years (sort of).

I started my blog back in June 2007 and then built it up to roughly 4,000-6,000 visitors per day by June 2009.

I wrote my first report in summer of 2009 and offered it for free on my blog (for the opt-in)

It got roughly 3,000 subscribers in 3-4 months. I wasn't exactly thrilled with the response rate...so I went back to the drawing board and created a much more compelling ecourse.

My second ecourse took off and I built a list of 10,000+ in 3 months.

So it took me 2 times to get it right.

Do I make $1 per month per subscriber?

No...I simply don't like monetizing my list aggressively. I do make a nice full-time income, but not half a million per year from this list. If the list of 50,000 was a buyers list, then you could probably expect to make closer to that number. If it is from a free opt-in, then not so much.

        Hope that helps,

        -Rusty

Just my two cents - the back and forth on subscriber profitability - it depends on your niche and your skill set - I actually earn about $2500 - $4500 daily from an active list of only about 19,495 people

If you are in the IM niche and can launch a good product you can build a list of 50k in a matter of hours.

In the IM Niche it seems as if you don't even need good products 1/2 of the time.

So many promote good sales pages and good commissions -vs- solid products in the IM niche.

This will hopefully slow down at some point.

Buy targeted leads, send solo ads through targeted ezines, or submit articles to relevant ezine publishers. I've been building niche lists of well over 50k every single month by just using these three methods alone.

It took me a little over a year to get to 50k, (47,000 to be exact)

Let me tell you one thing mate. It's not easy at all. It's harsh. I put all my life in to my list and I have a buyers list and some are freebee seekers.

I currently make a fantastic income on 5 figures.
It's not easy, you have to work if you don't have the money, but just keep working.

So ad space on ezine sites to send traffic to an opt-in works? Also, I'm assuming that there are sites where you can purchase leads?

        Ezines are not "sites".

An ezine is circulated by email.

I'm not certain what confused you here, CA. I'm wondering whether perhaps you meant "article directories", when you said "ezine sites"? It may possibly help you to read post #7 above?

I don't build lists anymore because I've found a much better way of generating sales than that paint by numbers method that doesn't work anymore..

Then again, I have physical product, not some sham e-book for sale.

Therein lies the secret to wealth. Physical product versus e-book.

Ezine articles are defintely worth using for getting started. I would also say solo ads are a great way to started, when I first started out I used the directory of ezines and has some really helpful on there and doesnt just cover Ezines.

I have added over 70k+ people to my various IM lists over time, starting back in 2009 ... but for a long while it was actually not growing more than a few people per day ...
So let's say, since I started accelerated list building could have passed about 2 years now.

Out of those 70k+ many are overlapping on different segments, other emails become dead or they are simply added numbers (were bouncing from the beginning) so, all-in-all, I have now a bit over 17k+ active unique emails on my lists

They show an average 2%-3% open rate when I send more general emails to all of them, or up to 10%-20% when I send highly targeted emails to certain smaller segments.

While the overall subscriber value accross ALL my lists is $0.14/month, many segments have much more value, up to even $3-$5 for certain software focused segments.

This is not a game, guys ... you can't just ask about numbers out there and expect it to be the same for your own efforts.

This is a business, needs to be built, nurtured - money need to be spent and time as well, to make it work.

On the other hand, last but not least ... two lists of the same size, would have different responses to different marketers, based on their relationships, BUT also ...

The very same list (say my OWN list for example) would respond differently based on certain factors like:
      • time of broadcast
      • email subject line
      • email copy
      • call-to-action
      etc...
So it is always SMART to (at least) split test your campaigns to try to improve on all levels:
      • increase opens
      • increase readership
      • increase clickthroughs
... in order to get the most of your list.

The combined ART & SCIENCE of email marketing is something that CAN be learned!

But don't take 'gurus' by their words ($1/month) - run your own numbers instead.
Start from there and work on improving the results...
