How to NOT be a sell-out?

Hi guys. I hope this is the right place to post this. I tried to read all the rules first and this seemed like the best fit.

I am looking for advice

Our team is great at creating new products (mostly software, sometimes SAAS websites or mobile apps, lots of cool stuff). We usually write patents on the new technology we come up with too.

BUT, we are LOUSY at marketing and sales!

In the past, we've been very fortunate to have our tech acquired by other entrepreneurs or companies who then take them to market. THIS TIME - we are wanting to keep the technology and monetize it online.

We don't really know where to start.

Should we start an affiliate network? Run PPC Ads? Adsense? Article Marketing? Clickbank? WHAT?! My head is spinning with all the options.

I am dreaming of finding a partner who will monetize the tech, but let us stay on board to continue to develop/improve the technology and get a 50% revenue share.

Here's the question:
If you were just starting out, with your own product, what is the SINGLE most important marketing action you'd take to start selling it online?

    Kristen, here's a quick question that might get you started...

    When your group sold the rights to the technology you developed, what did the buyers do to monetize it?

    Next question...

    Can you do that? Or can you find an investor that can provide that?

    Ideally, you want someone with some skin in the game rather than a mercenary who is doing it for the revenue share.

    If you don't want to give up any equity, an affiliate program might be the way to go. Hard to say without knowing more, and I don't want to see you posting sensitive info on a public forum like this one.

    Affiliate programs don’t work if you don’t do anything in order to recruit affiliates. They don’t simply ‘decide’ to promote your products, unless they are best sellers.

    The best free traffic generating method for a website is article writing and marketing. You should regularly submit your articles to ezinearticles.com and post 2 links in your resource box. Visit ezinearticles’ blog because they give you article writing lessons.

    If you are not a good writer, you should purchase articles written by ghostwriters because they use the best keywords, attracting search engine traffic, and they write appealing articles for the public.

    If you don’t know how to use Google Adwords, stay far from PPC ads. You have to carefully study their system and make many calculations before spending your money with these ads. Otherwise, you might spend a lot of money without making any sales.

    Another good free traffic generating method is answering questions at Yahoo Answers and Quora.

    Everything takes time. Getting traffic is not a simple matter.
