Mailing List Question - Previous Customers To New List

5 replies
Hi everyone. A couple of friends suggested that I ask for suggestions from the pros, so here I am. Here is my situation and question.

I am a VA. Currently I'm working with a client who has several thousand customers who have purchased items from her in the past. These customers were never added to a mailing list but the owner has access to the their contact information through PayPal.

My client has a new product coming out soon and would like to notify the previous customers of the new product launch. We are allowed to add the customers to the mailing list; however, new additions get a double opt-in before they can receive messages from the mailing list.

I know we don't really need to mass email them directly because we don't want our email address to be reported as spam. Does anyone know of an ethical way in which the older customers can be contacted without them having to go through the opt-in process?

Thanks in Advance,
Kit

    Your going to have to have them opt-in for it to be legally. Otherwise you are bound to get reported as spam a couple of times.

      To the best of my knowledge it is LEGAL to e-mail your previous customers without any opt-in whatsoever. You just have to include an opt-out message at the bottom along with the other CAN-SPAM requirements.

      I would send some type of announcement stating that they will be receiving future product updates and support. If they don't want to be included they can opt-out at the bottom of the e-mail. This will prepare customers for upcoming promotional e-mails.

      There's probably other ways to approach this.

        There are a few solutions for you.

        Self hosted email scripts:

        * ARP3
        * phplist
        * Infinite Responder (I used a custom version of this)

        I can speak to the last one...even the basic version has a place you can manually add people to a list, with my customized version I can bulk add from a csv file.

        I believe ARP3 also has a nice way to import leads, I own a license but haven't used it recently...phplist wasn't as flexible as I wanted.

        For a windows based solution you can use GroupMail (pro/business version recommended).

        Hope this helps.
