Anyone else making money with free Blogger blogs?

Hey Guys,

Wordpress tends to be very popular right now. But is anyone else making money with free Blogger blogs?

People tend to downplay it because of the fact that Blogger is free. But I have been consistently making money using them for the past 6 months.

I know it sounds crazy. But they are just so simple to create and maintain. Yes, I know that I am at the risk of having my blog disappear.

But for so many that aren't taking action because they don't know how to create a self hosted Wordpress blog, why not go the Blogger route?

I have about 15 Blogger blogs currently, and am working on several more.

Anyone else making money with Blogger blogs?

Yes. Most people tend to discount blogger blogs. I think it is a combination of everyone repeating what someone else says (I think you need a host because everyone say so...so it must be true) and affiliate marketers who are pushing hosting (You need to own your site..btw, here is link to who I host with).

The reality is that a site is a site is a site and if you are going the information route, then a blogger blog could rank just as highly as a self hosted blog. To put it frankly, google doesn't care if you spent the money or not...you still have to do the legwork regardless of what you choose.

All of my traffic is organic. Basically here is the formula I have been using:

      1. Find a market and check market share.
      2. Do keyword research...find a couple juicy keywords.
      3. Grab a blogger blog with the main keyword in the url.
      4. Write 5-10 posts and link them together (keyword snipe)
      5. Get links.
      6. Repeat.
I typically monetize with adsense and move on. It can be hit and miss. I have several blogs that are getting 500-600 uniques a day. I have others that get nothing. I have a couple blogs that are getting 1000+ a day.

The key is getting organic traffic. If you aren't getting organic traffic, you are working too hard.

        Simon,

This is very similar to what I'm doing (although I'm not getting as much traffic daily as you are).

When you say "get links", what do you mean? I tend to write and submit articles to EZA. What methods are you using to generate good backlinks?

I get a TON of traffic from Twitter - although I wouldn't necessarily use Twitter to drive traffic to a blog with affiliate products. I drive traffic to my press release site.

Other than that, try article marketing - ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com, and associatedcontent.com, are really good for driving traffic.

Hey Steve for some great traffic tips from a professional blogger (Yaro Starak) click the first link in my sig file and read his guest post on my free wordpress hosted blog. My blog is a little over a month old now and Ihave seen a dramatic increase in traffic since I started doing what he suggests.

Yup, me too... I subbed to Yaro couple years ago.
What he suggested sounded a lot like what Joe Vitale said in Hypnotic Writing: Just write (just blog) don't worry about the end product, you're not there yet... You gotta have content first.

I'm almost exclusvily using blogspot blogs, I just started using wordpress.com ones... I sell one to two ebooks daily from them.

One of my wordpress blogs got written up in the local paper (I made it for a client, my name isn't mentioned but it wasn't supposed to be, I'm the ghost writer kinda sorta)

IF a blogspot blog is so crappy, how come mine outrank conventional websites?

        Google this: Frederick Airport Transportation

        case closed

I'll move higher up the food chain with a domain names, and then hosting...

I just bartered with a seo client, he's paying for my own hosting acct.

but the original question was this: are blogger blogs ok?

        no problem on my end.

Yes, over 50 at last count.

As for getting traffic, and I'm talking about targeted organic search traffic from Google, the answer is links, links and more links.

Interesting. I came here to ask a similar question.

What I would like to know is - does anyone use self-hosted
Blogger blogs? Surely this is how you get around the danger
of losing your content since you own the host - but take
advantage of the free domain name and Google Blog
    network.

    Anyone?

Blogger blogs are free, but so are WordPress blogs, right?

For those who like Blogger, I recently saw some beautiful themes that only work in Blogger. They're probably more "girlie" than most men would be comfortable with. Actually, I thought they looked to be more appropriate for a personal blog or a business with a mostly female target audience.

The problem with free blogs is they are not yours. So, you work extremely hard to build a steady flow of traffic to someone else's site. Because, really, is this your site?

If you insist on using a free blog, you would be better suited to purchase a domain name and redirect it to the free blog. This way, when your free blog goes away, you just send the traffic to another site.

Personally, I would only use a free blog for link generation. Stick with your own hosting account and your own blog.

Whether they can figure it out and whether they THINK they can figure it out are two different things.

      Sure, it's simple enough.

      - Buy a domain name.
      - Get some hosting.
      - Upload the Wordpress theme/template (I think my hosting provider already has some).
      -Modify and you're done.

But most newbies don't realize that it can be this easy.

I do have some self hosted blogs by the way. It's just that with my current project, I need lots of blogs. So instead of purchasing domain names and hosting for each one, going the free route works for me.

        DIY,

Another option you might want to look into to track your traffic is:

StatCounter Free invisible Web tracker, Hit counter and Web stats

Oh, and it's free. You simply add a few bits of html code to your blog/site, and it keeps track of a variety of statistics like unique visitors, which pages visitors came from, which links they clicked to leave the blog/site, where they are located geographically, plus various other things that can provide you with valuable info.

Have you ever gotten warnings from Blogger that they suspect your site to be spam? Also, are all 15 sites under one email account? I heard that the maximum number of sites you should have under one email account is 5.

      Jeff,

No, I have never received any warnings from Blogger at all. And for good reason: my blogs are not spam.

Sure, I have 15 and plan to have much more, but they are not spam. They each contain unique content (either written by me or outsourced) that provides value to the reader.

Where did you hear about the 5 blog max? I haven't seen that posted anywhere in their TOS (I looked, but I may have not seen that). Do you have a link where they state that?

It's often recommended to keep the number of blogs per account under 10 to avoid attracting the attention of the anti-spam bot and triggering an automated lock-out and/or visual inspection. Of course, if your blog is squeaky clean the visual inspection is no problem except that you're offline a few days which can impact sales and search engine placement. But, if you're using dupe content (article directory or PLR articles), poor quality content (cheap outsourced or obviously spun articles), have a lot of ads and/or outbound links or if the Google engineer's free cappuccino wasn't the right temperature that morning you might lose your blog.

I appreciate your feedback. I truly do. With free Blogger blogs, there's always that possibility of having them disappear.

I will say that Blogger blogs is not the main focus of my IM activities. I have several static websites, as well as a couple of hosted blogs using the Wordpress script.

But there are times when using Blogger makes sense to me (especially when you are trying to test out the profitability of certain niches).

          Thanks again for your input.

I've been using my blogger blog for over 12 months now ... and I make money from it.

I get traffic from these methods:

    PPC
    Direct Mail
    Articles
    Organic

The problem I have is that I've wanted to move my blog to a wordpress blog and use my own domain name for sometime now, but with hundreds of regular visitors, I'm worried that I'll lose a lot of free traffic ... so I'm sticking with blogger for the foreseeable.

The Free Wordpress blog community is more restrictive
    than the Blogger one.

With Blogger you can do shameless self-promotion for
just about anything... maybe not sex and porn, but a lot
    of stuff.

With free WP blogs your blog can get wiped ou t if you
don't follow the TOS - which are more restrictive than
Blogger's - or at least morre enforced.

True. But.....sometimes its better to appear amateurish. For example:

Let's say that I want to promote a Clickbank product on Panic Attacks. If I come across as too "professional", the blog visitor might suspect that I am just a marketer trying to make a buck.

But if the blog appears to be written by your average Joe just talking about a product that actually helped, then the blog visitor is less likely to put up their sales resistance.

      That's just my take though.

Really? Don't tell that to the two Blogger sites that sit in the top 5 of Google's SERPS for "Make Money Online". They've been there quite a while too.

In fact, the 'Make Money For Beginners' blog is a great source on how to use Blogger blogs to make money with Adsense. And all his info is free.

I don't think either of these sites are hobby sites either.

There are many other examples of authority sites that are Blogger blogs. The blog platform doesn't make you a authority, what you put on the blog does.

I don't have a problem with the free blogger blogs they almost as good as your own domain.

But the bonus that having your own domain gives is the ability to brand. Anyone thats been in marketing for any length of time at all, or even just selling their own product online will probably tell you of the importance of branding for name recognition in any market place. On the internet, the biggest part of branding is your own domain name.

But the benefit that places like blogger.com or wordpress.com or any other blogger community has is pagerank. The more popular or longer existing any community is, usually the more people make it a regular haunt and start seeing the community as a whole as a reliable source of info, and do things like linking from /to other sites. Which means that these sites purely because of the popularity end up being favorites with google's searches.

In my experience its been better to have your own domain, own server, but still set up either presale or straight redirect sites in communities like blogger.com or wp.com to direct traffic back to your home base so you can dazzle them with your sales letter.

Even making a half decent page on the free sites that pre-qualifies people who are purchasing from you on your site, with the addition of ppc or maybe even affiliate links can really do nothing but add more money in your pocket when things get rolling.

I was under the impression that you normally couldn't make more than a few cents with blogger blogs. I guess I'm wrong? I only have wordpress, but I wouldn't mind trying out blogger sometimes if its worth it to see if I can get decent results.

      Hi....

Yes, you can make much more than a few cents with a Blogger blog. I have a one page Blogger blog that has been generating about $26 per month over the last few months (about $11 a month in Adsense, and another $15 a month in Clickbank commissions).

But it's not making money because its a Blogger blog. It makes money because its based around a high search/low competition keyword phrase.

It would make as much (or possibly more) if it were a Wordpress blog hosted by me. But I was initially unsure of the profitability of the keyword phrase, so I just threw together a quick, free Blogger blog to test it out.

I agreed that the right keywords bring in more traffic. Could you elaborate more on the high search/low competition keyword phrase? How do you determine it is low competition?

I have about 20 Blogger blogs and 7 Wordpress (my own domain) blogs. I make money with both.

To me it is not about the platform. The blogs that make me the most money all have the following three rules:

          1) LOTS of content
          2) ORIGINAL content
          3) FRESH UPDATED content

I have a few Blogger blogs on page 1 of Google and some that I can't even find. Same with my Wordpress blogs. The key is my CONTENT not the platform.

And I don't really worry about that 'one day' google might remove one of my blogger blogs - I've never heard of anyone that had a blog have that happen IRL. Sure spam blogs have been pulled but Google delists domains for the exact same reason. If you have a decent blog it makes no difference where it is hosted IMO.

I completely agree. As long as you are serious about creating a profitable niche site filled with unique content, you'll make money no matter which platform you use.

I have added free wordpress blogs to my own hosted domain -- but it was quite a while ago and I never kept the blog up.

I'm about to start a new blog that hopefully I will keep up.

        Questions:

If I add a free wordpress blog through my domain, does wordpress own the blog or do I?

Assuming my content is legal and moral etc., does wordpress restrict ads on blogs hosted through my domain?

If its hosted on your account, YOU own the blog. Wordpress is just a software and can't dictate what your blog is about. Only if its hosted on Wordpress can they make the rules. So blog about what you want, put ads about what you want, its fine cause you're hosting it.

How much traffic are you getting on a daily basis from them? How are you marketing them?

I just created 25 blogger blogs today after I found a niche that I think will be profitable as long as we are having layoffs and in a recession. I plan on creating 50-100 more before the week is over. I have it down to where i can create 1 blog in 5 minutes.I do this part-time but eventually I will have the time and resources to create static websites, which I already own 4. I also create blogger blogs that are obsolete after 7 days anyways, I just use them to auction off a product to certain niches that i market to.

          Dave,

You created 25 blogs in ONE day. Are you doing it manually, or do you have some software/script to automate some of the process?

Did you create all 25 blogs for that one niche? That's pretty intense, but it makes sense.

Instead of creating blogs on a variety of sub-niches in unrelated areas, you are doing it all within one niche.

I create them manually, some day I may figure out how to automate it, but again each blog takes me less than 5 minutes, so no biggie. Each blog is only about 200 words, the actual text or body of the blog is the same, the niche is the same for every blog, but my target is different, if that is understandable.

The blogs i create to auction off my product which is different from the above blogs i create, is a little more time consuming but pays more per site.

You know, for all the talk about the potential for people's blogspot blogs being shut down...how often does this really happen? I mean, for that matter, if Godaddy feels that you are violating THEIR terms of service they can take back the domain name that you registered with them. All kinds of things CAN happen online, and I am not saying that completely innocent people never get inconvenienced by this kind of thing, but I truly don't believe that the odds are really that great that it's going to happen.

When I say "completely innocent" in this context, I think that if you have a blogspot blog and it has original content on it and isn't selling pharmaceuticals or porn, I just don't see why blogspot would shut you down. I have several blogspot blogs up, and I've never had a problem. They are GREAT for instantly throwing up a blog for free, easily dropping in HTML code to create payment buttons and links...I've been very happy with them.

I totally agree with you. Blogger blogs are SO EASY to set up. I can quickly (within 30 minutes) get a decent blog started. And they make it very simple to add images, Adsense, video, etc.

If you are a newbie and want to "test the waters", a Blogger blog may be the way to go.

Right. I have never had a problem with Blogger taken down any of my blogs, nor I do I know of anyone personally who has either.

As long as you follow their TOS and don't create spam blogs, a person should feel confident that none of their blogs will disappear.

Let me also say that I don't think that Blogger blogs are the best option. If you have the funds, then getting a Wordpress blog on your own hosting account is much better (and I do this too).

But if you are like the typically newbie (ie. broke), then Blogger blogs can be a good starting point.

What are you doing to drive traffic to the blogspot blogs? If you don't have targeted, interested traffic showing up, you aren't going to make money.

I've had my best luck with article marketing, as far as driving traffic to an adsense blog.

You know Kate, I have to digress a bit from my original post in this thread, I was suffering from wordpress pride. However since I have actually created a blogspot blog and I will agree that it extremely easy to do...always a plus for us newbie's...The other thing as far as the free platform goes, it's much easier...IMO...to monetize blogspots than wordpress because wordpress won't allow javascript and therefore no adsense, kontera, amazon, etc. So I say bravo to you for starting this thread because before it I had no interest whatsoever in using blogspots.
That being said I'm going out on a limb here to ask for you and the rest who are getting results to check out my acne blogspot and give me some pointers if you don't mind. It's only about 2 weeks old and I just got approved for adsense. Any help would be much appreciated...I know the acne niche is saturated, but it is still very profitable.

I have been using blogger blogs for a while now. I know one thing that someone said was they were worried that one day they won't have their blog anymore as it's not really theirs. That is something that worries me too. I am going to be in the process of changing things over to my own hosting. Blogger is great for anyone wanting something free to start up and make money online. But for serious people at this I think getting your own hosting and domain name is better. One thing that I've read is that Wordpress has much more add-ons you can do and more freedom then Blogger. From looking at other peoples blogs I would agree. Anyone have any opinions on this?

I started out on Blogger blogs but now I only use self hosted Wordpress blogs. The funny thing is that I still do make some money from adsense on one of the first Blogger blogs I created.

Honestly though, I really don't think it matters if you rely on Blogger. I have no doubt that you could make just as much money with free Blogger blogs as you could with your own domain and host on Wordpress. The reason why I use Wordpress is because I like the feeling of owning my blogs/websites and having total control over them.
