GoogleAdWords: Any problems buying 5 cent keywords?

Hi Warriors,

I did some keyword research and found a hefty list of keywords in one of the niches I work in with a decent number of searches and very little competition. I also saw that all of these keywords word be in first, second or third position for a bid of 5 cents.

I'm an AdWords rookie, so I'm wondering if there's anything to be cautious of with 5 cent keywords. When I checked out my major keywords, the price was over $2.00 per click and there was a lot of competition.

Thanks for the help.

Paul

    Yup, something is definitely wrong.

It's likely those keywords don't convert at all, that's why there's no competition.

In Adwords, when you see no competitors, you've stepped on a "graveyard", guaranteed.

If it's Yahoo or MSN, when you see no competitors, it could STILL possibly be an undiscovered "goldmine"

No offense, but that is really bad advice.

Paul, how about you test the keywords out? At 5 cents... its hardly a risk. The thing that causes high CPC's are when there are alot of competitors competing against each other, so that is why it must be so low.

No competition? Could be for a reason.

      Test it out.

I have to agree with Johnson Tay, if the words are all available they are probably non converting. I would try more specific keywords. Even if they cost more, they probably convert better. I would do that or the content network. I know being a newbie on adwords is hard, so make sure you do a lot of reading and research before you put your daily spend too high.

We need a LOT more information. I think getting some decent converting keywords in the SEARCH network for 5 cents will be VERY tough especially for a rookie. The content network that is much more realistic, however, you will need a very good ad that will pull people off whatever page they are looking at. You should start with perry marshals book and depending on your budget look into the wholesale traffic system. Wait im not even sure its out anymore. Have to check

Non profitable for them! I personaly would run with those keywords and start converting them.

If you run every time there's no competition you'll never hit the goldmine.

I'm with Garret, at that price you can test things out the wazoo...and honestly that's the only way to know what the keywords are really worth.

    Paul,

Go for it. Nothing wrong with 5 cent adwords. It would certainly be easier on your wallet when you test. Wish I was more educated when I started using Adwords. I got taken to the cleaners by Google (I still believe I was the one who pushed their stock over $700/share at the time..hahahaha!) because I went straight to the big time keywords instead of testing the small ones.

This is an issue with quality score, not the keywords themselves. In AdWords you need to click "customize columns" and add quality score. That way you can see what's going on with your quality score for each keyword.

In most cases, if you are forced to pay $1 for a 5 cent keyword, it's because your landing page is totally irrelevant to that keyword. What you need to do is build specific landing pages that are rich for those particular keywords; direct those keywords to those landing pages and Google will love you and you'll have your 5 cent clicks!

And you'll have a MUCH higher opt-in rate because those landing pages will be far more relevant to what the user is looking for

I haven't got 5c keywords in the past couple of years now. The adwords tool provides kinda outdated traffic - it's good to get an idea of the search volume though.

There are tons and tons of 5 cent keywords in my campaigns and I do VERY well with them. The idea that "nobody wants them" is ridiculous. Trust me, as an AdWords "guru" I can tell you that the rest of the world is way behind IM when it comes to using AdWords. Personally I even think most IMers are way behind with AdWords.

It does not mean that 5 cents keyword does not convert..

You need to test and see how well the keyword does. And I agree with Frank, quality score is also very important. Your keyword must be tightly related to your ads and also related to your landing page. When you do that, Google will lower your cost per click..

I am for testing the keywords before you write them off. As the conversions depend very much on the quality of the sales letter, make sure that you test them on a sales letter that is proven to work. Depending on your budget, you can go for 100 visitors for each keyword. Who knows you may have hit a goldmine!

Nothing wrong with 5 cent keywords but beware you may not get a lot of traffic from those and thus one reason it's cheap.

I would just like to put in my 2 cents on this topic.

Adwords are based on keyword popularity and search results. Just because the keywords are .05 CPC doesn't mean it's worthless...As a matter of fact, you should take advantage of that...

Example: Marketing..<<<------6.50 PC..<<<------3.5 Million Per Month
Example: Marketing Today Online..<<<----.05 PC..<<<-----150K Per Month

The above is just an example of what I want to point out. You still have a good market on the .05 PC.

Just because a keyword is .05 PC doesn't mean it's not a good one, it's based on popularity and search results. As a smart IMer, I've learned to stay away from the flooded market...

      So let's see:

I pay .05 PC keywords and covert them well
      Or
I pay 6.50 PC and covert it as the same rate

      Which one is more profitable??

      Example:

      .05 X 100 clicks = $5.00 at a conversion rate of 1%, my product is $30.00 I profit $25.00

      6.50 X 100 clicks= 650.00 at a conversion rate of 1%, my product is $30.00 I lost $620.00

Do your research and be smart, set up your campaign correctly.

    Hi Mike,

I posted a question about AdWords on the Adsense/PPC/SEO Discusion Forum and got only two replies. When I posted an AdWords question here, I got 18 replies. Gotta go where the response is!
