Hi --

Recently have a forum that is starting to get popular, and looking for a pluging or tweak that can prevent users from arbritarily signing up to spam (to boost their rankings). Been getting more & more bogus users from xrumer, etc.

Thanks.

Use the 'Q&A' option in the 'Spambot countermeasures' section in the general tab, in the admin. Configure the plugin from captcha to Q&A. Stops most of the bots in thier tracks.

There are lots of mods and hacks for phpBB (what they call plugins) to combat spam.

Here is a page with 30 to choose from: https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/m...s/anti-spam-9/

    Otherwise Google 'phpBB mods'

I had the same problem the BEST (and only REALLY working) I installed was 'stopforumspam'. Just find a plugin who incorporates their service and you are golden..

Reduced my spam to almost zero!

Paid forum scripts are in a much better position since they are rarer and because of this not targeted that much. And still, this forum here had to implement a registering fee just to get rid of spam registrations. Probably the only effective way...

Paid forum platforms are getting slammed just as much, if not more. For instance, Warriror Forums uses a modified VB setup. Spammers are working specially hard on attacking high volume forums where they can get access to several thousand eyeballs at a time and potential back links.

Unfortunately, the only things I see really working are forums that are heavily moderated and limit access in someway.

You may also want to try restricting registered users by country.
