Hot off the press: Facebook Made Changes to Your Fan Pages

Facebook has made big changes to the layout and function of Pages, making them work and look more like regular FB user profiles.

The news story goes into detail: Facebook's New Pages: A Hands-On Tour - PCWorld

My favourite thing is that you can now use Facebook AS your Page, and interact with people and other pages under the moniker of your page.

What do you think? Does this earn the coveted "Like"?

You can apply the changes to your Facebook page(s), or see a preview at http://www.facebook.com/pages/status/

Here's my take on it (taken from a post I made on my own FB page..)

    Some good things:
    - you can browse Facebook as a 'Page' not just as a person
    - a page can like other pages (these first two are significant in the way a page can now interact on Facebook.)
    - get email notifications when fans post on your wall etc (fantastic!)
    - you get notified of how many more 'likes' you have gotten since you last logged in
    - You can change the type of page (eg: from a person to a service. Good news if you made the wrong choice to start with)

    Not so good:
    - profile picture dimensions have changed from 200x600 to 180x540 (back to the drawing board again folks!!)
    - the top tabs have been moved to the left (supposedly to improve navigation) I guess this isn't so bad as it has already happened on personal profiles so at least people are used to it.
    - Info box on the left hand side has gone (arrgh!!)

Best bit for me is being able to post, like, comment etc as a Page rather than a person. Finally sorts out how to truly separate business and personal if that's what you want to do within FB.

You can preview the new layout for 4 weeks then it will go live from March 1st for everyone. You can choose to switch over sooner but won't be able to switch back.

So no more landing page? Or am I missing something?

Thanks Libby, I was wondering about those dimensions. Do you happen to know if the pixel width for the center image has changed? Has it shrunk from 520?

It feels different for some reason on two different browsers now (or is my image appearing to be cropped because I'm viewing it as admin from one vs. not from another?)

Very good point Nathan, I hadn't even thought about that but it's very likely it has changed. The right hand column seems wider so that may have been where the extra space went but could also have come from the middle.

Another thing to look at tonight!

There are still landing pages. Mine is still working fine.

It appears it has shrunk. Mine is now a little cut off down the right hand side.

Yes... the center width has changed. Right column does look wider than it was before. There is going to be alot of editing going on for everyone. Interesting change and only time will tell if the "look" of these pages will help!

Center Column changes were made...I will say a close 500px wide now.

Top Tabs Removed and are now located below top left logo image. - Looks like have a smaller image vertically will bring the menu options closer to the top where they should be. This doesn't seem like a very good change from a user navigation standpoint???

I'm not 100% sold on these changes yet....

Apparently it's just a bug. According to a Facebook Product manager the width of the page tabs is still 520px and it was a glitch that reduced the size.

Won't be the case for the profile picture though as that is documented in FB help ie: it's not 180x540 pixels max.

    I like this!

Facebook is just awesome isn't it. How do they come up with all of these new changes that keep making the site better and better? Admittedly not ALL the changes improve the site, but still.

A bit OT but I highly recommend the book 'The Facebook Effect'

When I updated my profile picture to an image of 180px wide my center column in no longer truncated anymore. Seems you need to change the profile picture to have the page correct itself...

big thing for me and would love to know if this possible

it says that you will now get a notification if anyone comments on your page does this include individual pictures within an album or simply just for the wall?

be really keen to know as we have about 20 albums and have only been giving daily love to one of them as it is to hard to track....

      any advice?

For me, being able to interact (comment, 'LIKE' etc) as a page rather than myself.

I don't really use FB for personal stuff so it was always really annoying trying to direct people to my FanPage via my personal profile.

I don't mind changes like being able to use the Page instead of my own profile to 'like' other pages, but what I don't like at all is the change of profile pic size (with no warning that I remember seeing). I also do not like the tabs going away to the left side. I much prefer the tabs to the pics across the top.
