Need help cracking open this piggy bank

So I have a friend who made me an offer of 33% of his net profits if I was able to help him make some sales.

Initially I was really confident that I could pull it off with ease. I used to work for an IM company under a couple of fairly successful "guru" types. My duties were mainly ghost writing, copy, support and constructing sales funnels. (as part of a team, not by myself)

So, having a hand in a few 5 figure launches and even one 6 figure launch, I felt like this shouldn't be a problem.

Basically he has access to a network of speed dating promoters that put on 2-4 speed dating events a month in over 80 major cities in the U.S.

For each lead that we send in that actually buys a ticket to the speed dating event, we receive around a $20 commission, and also have permission to sell that lead to online dating sites.

Problem: I am somewhat unfamiliar with the dating niche and not even sure how popular speed dating is. Also, the website that he has is a total disaster.

there isn't really a landing page, only a page that says choose your city (sort of like craigslist) then once you choose your city it shows you a list of upcoming events and gives you the option to purchase a ticket.

Does anyone have any ideas on a traffic process for something like this?

I have a few ideas but I want to see if anyone on here has done anything similar to this so i don't end up wasting my time trying to re-invent the lightbulb.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Why not try getting some Facebook fan pages going for speed dating in local areas ie 'Speed Dating in City X' and try and spread them through word of mouth. This way you can easily update members of your pages about the speed dating events coming up.

I had thought about that, but was trying to come up with a way to advertise without having a separate account for each city, as managing 80 of those would be a little tedious.

But it's a fantastic idea and a good place to start, especially if I focus on just a handful of the bigger cities at first.

      thanks!

I haven't tried adsense yet. I think it would be a wise move to wait until I can convince my friend to dish out the money and pay for a new (or at least reconstructed) site first. Since I'm not getting an upfront fee, I don't want to get my hands dirty by investing any of my own money in advertising just yet.

I know the first step would be to get a solid landing page up, but that part is kind of out of my hands at the moment. However, I still think (or hope, maybe) that if the right traffic were to find it's way to the page, they would actually take the time to choose a city and look at the events.

I've been thinking about trying PlentyOfFish but I hear the tracking and testing can get pretty hairy.

If you are not familiar with the dating niche as you say them leave it alone. Don't waste your time or money on it because those ppc will eat you up raw. Try something you know about instead.
