Word Press and Host Gator

15 replies
Hello,

Total rookie at this, so please excuse the basic question.

I want to set up a Word Press site on Host Gator or wherever.....

Actually, I want to create several niche websites. Do I need a separate WP installs with the host or am I renting space on a server to install however many WP installs I want.

I'm not sure if that makes sense....

Basically, if I want to create several niche websites, do I use the same server space?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

  • Yes, you can use the same server space. I love Hostgator 12 sites hosted on one account. You'll need to be sure you have an account with hostgator that allows you to host more than one domain. I have unlimited domains that can be hosted for about $10 a month.

      Use Hostgator and with the CPanel there's fantastico where you can install Wordpress immediately (sometimes it might not be the latest version but its easy to do an automatic update as soon as its installed).

      If you intend to have many self-hosted blogs, look at the financial feasibility of a re-seller account rather than lots of individual accounts.

    You need a hosting package that will let you to host not one but many domains... I guess by "several sites" you meant different domains, like
    example.com
    example1.com
    example2.com etc.

    So, buy the domain names from a registrar, like namecheap.com;
    you buy the hosting package - go with HG if you are familiar with it;
    you edit the DNS info for your domains at the registrar to pint them to your host;

    You install WP on each and every domain... where you want a site.

    I think the answer to your question is simple. Yes you can. with any host actually not only Hostogator. Just make sure to buy the right account that have either about 20 or more or unlimited domains hosted.

    And then next you simply buy the various domain names and install WD on each domain name but all hosted on the same hosting account.

    Hope that helps.

      The great thing about Hostgator is for $10, you can have unlimited sites and databases. Of course if you start getting a lot of traffic you'll need to upgrade, but in the meantime you can really go crazy, create hundreds of sites.

      Hostgator is definitely one of the best hosts for creating crazy amounts of autoblogs.

    Go for the baby plan at hostgator, its about 10$ a month and you can install unlimited sites. That's the one I use. If things get too cluttered and you have build enough sites to afford another hosting account you can buy another one and have it for backlinks with a different IP

      I also recommend you to go with Hostgator... I've been hosting all of my sites with them for years, never gad a single problem and best of all you can get the first month for just 1 cent using one of the many coupons available online.

    Thanks to all that have chimed in! So first I will purchase domain names (as soon as I do proper research on niche markets and keywords), sign up for Host Gator Baby account (which sounds like it's exactly what I need) and use Fantasico to install WP (the upgrade WP). What about email accounts? Is that a different deal will I have a different domain email address for each domain purchased.

    Cheers,

    Dave

      After you have used fantastico to install WP on all your domains, you should be able to see a section in your cpanel that says email accounts or something similar. If you go in there, then you will see the place to create the email accounts for each of your separate domains.

    You only need to create one hostgator account. I would go for the $10/month one if I were you. Once you have your account set up, you need to log into your cpanel and you should find a section for add-on domains. You should add all the domains that you want to in there. Be sure to update your nameservers at your domain registrar.

    In the site administration interface (most commonly used is one called cPanel) you have tools and options to set up zillion email addresses for each domain.

    Thanks for all the direction....in looking at the Host Gator options, I can get a dedicated IP, but what are the advantages of this?

    Cheers,

    As a self-proclaimed "rookie"... please, don't fall for every upsell. Everybody's trying to sell more to all the potential clients.

    If you don't know about it (i.e. wasn't mentioned in the advice above), just don't buy it because most likely you don't need it.
    If down the road you'll learn you need some additonal features/gizmos... you can always add them later, when you know why are you buying them!

    EDIT. In case you are in a spending mood... AND you really plan to have many, many sites - I'd rather consider spending on a reseller hosting package. But that's just me.

    I suggest you get the Baby plan at HostGator and actually look at the cPanel. What you want to do is easy, and I think you'll catch on quickly once you are able to see all your options. The cPanel screen is nicely organized and fairly intuitive.
