If I was going to build a website about cooking recipes as an example, how would I add a "find a recipe search box", "find a recipe by letter, with all the letters of the alphabet displayed", and have categories for each type of recipe on the left side bar. I also would like to have a most popular section. How would I do all of these things and what platform should I use?

Also, how could I get income from a website like this other than adsense?

Optimizing for keywords would also be hard, other than the particular recipes, would it be through the use of meta keywords on my site?

A Wordpress self hosted blog is probably the easiest to set up to cover your requirements. There's a lot of free information on Wordpress and setting up a blog available on Google etc.

      Does the theme really matter?

IMO, maybe not an expert because I only have a few recipe sites, but I am not sure people are going to look for a recipe by letter so much as they are going to look by ingredients or category.

There are pluigns you can get for WP that will set some posts as featured posts or most recent. I do not use those on my sites, but you can probably find them by googling featured post plugin or popular posts plugin.

If you have pages on your site about cookware, or stoves or utensils or kitchen design you could probably monetize from those. You can also add banners in your sidebars for diet products or additonal cookbooks on Clickbank or Amazon.

If you add the AllInOne SEO plugin, you can set the title and description and tags for each post in an SEO friendly way. Its a bit of work, but its also qite a bit of fun.

Here is a recipe/cooking wordpress theme I just found for you. Seems to have everything you were looking for. Even if you change some of the colors if you don't like them it will be a nice and cheap way to get started.

WordPress - Time for Food for Wordpress - ThemeForest

You can see a live preview of the theme in action here:

When starting off a free theme is just fine when you start to get big a custom theme is recommended.
