      Exercise. Healthy eating.

      (I'm sure someone is bound to recommend those Monster energy drinks...I know someone who had a very bad experience with them attempting to pull an all nighter for a test. I'd recommend you stay away from them...or no more than 1 or 2 a week if you must have them...)

        Whats wrong with Monster Energy drinks. I used to drink them like water and I am not talking about the little cans neither. One of my favs was the BFC Mosters and I drank upwards of 3-4 of those a day.

        Any how my advice to the op would be to do most of your writing when you first wake up. If you have a lap top you can also simply grab that out pop on your favorite chair while watching some tv. I personally do not like to watch tv my self while working but I do it at times just so I can stay up a bit longer to get a little more work done.

        You might also try taking a hot shower right before you start doing any writing. For the hot water releases endorphins which will keep you up for at least a couple of hours afterwords.

          While Monster may give you that great jolt of energy initially, it'll set you up for an awful crash later on. It's not a question whether it'll happen, it's just a question of when it'll happen. Also, it may not be a good idea to drink more than 3 of those giant Monsters a day, because all sorts of adverse side effects can occur. I believe that it even says on the can that you should not under any circumstances drink more than 2 in a day.

          Taurine, which is found in large quantities in many energy drinks including Red Bull and Monster, can contribute to kidney failure in large quantities, and it has been shown by the medical community to have an adverse effect on people with poorly functioning kidneys. So, I'd hold off on overdosing on those large Monster cans if I were you.

          Getting back to the topic on hand, I find that audio entrainment works really well. I'm sure Brad Gosse won't mind me mentioning this, he has this excellent free audio somewhere on this forum that really helps with focus, and you'll find it much easier to tune out distractions or sleepiness with it playing. A great massive audio entrainment package for various productivity tasks (focus, creativity, rest, energy, etc.) is offered as a WSO by fellow warrior Alexandre Valois, and I use that quite often as well.

        Energy drinks are known to thicken the blood after about two hours - many strokes have been caused by this.

    A few hits of speed or a few lines of coke would probably help you out LOL J/K! Honestly, are you getting enough sleep at night or are you staying up all night? The other thing might be is that a few years back I was falling asleep all the time. I went to the doctor and it turned out I had sleep apnea. After I got my CPAP machine, I am able to stay awake during the day. You might want to go get checked out.

    Use a speech-to-text translator like Dragon or the Windows Speech Recognition.

    We love the sounds of our own voices, and you can get up from the keyboard and pace a bit while talking instead of staring at the keyboard for an hour.

    Plus Text-to-Speech is faster than typing.

      Not so sure about that, I've always felt silly while doing what's essentially talking to myself. Or at the PC. How about loading up on caffeine beforehand? If you're susceptible to it, it can make you quite jumpy and energetic, enough that you won't doze off. The content of your articles can turn out a bit incoherent, but that's what proofreading is for.

      I agree. These methods/systems are very helpful. Don't overlook the benefits of sleep and a healthy diet. Stay away from pop and junk food.

    The reality is, you would stay awake if you were really interested in your work. If you were excited about your product and IM in general you probably would not need energy drinks or anything else--you would be a dynamo. Time to re-access what you really want to do with your time?

    I know exactly how you feel! I highly recommend drinking lots of fluids (water, tea, the healthy stuff we don't usually think of). Anything caffeinated (soda, coffee) will cause you to eventually crash and be more tired than before. Most sugary juices can also keep you awake as they contain easy to absorb sugar but no caffeine.

        All kidding aside, this isn't for you. If you can't stay awake writing about
        something then you're heart isn't in it and you won't do a good job.

        Either outsource it or write about something else or find another way to drive

            Use the freewriting method. Normal writing is boring and takes too much time.

            The best explanation I found about freewriting by an English teacher :confused:. Is very important that you don't care about misspellings or bad grammar or off topic thoughts - just keep writing.

            I learned about this method by Ed Dale's Challenge. Ed reccomends "Accidental Genius" by Mark Levy for this method.

              I have taught writing for many years on the college level, in seminars and in other ways. I've never been a fan of Free Writing. People are allowed to go off-track and that's counter-productive. It's not a sustainable way of writing in real-worlds situations. Fun for students maybe, but otherwise not too practical. It is better to write to an outline because you have direction.

              I like Ed Dale's Challenge. It's a practical, useful approach to the kind of production writing most IM requires.

              The OP's problem is different. All the coffee or energy drinks in the world probably won't help. You need to be interested in your topic to stay awake. You've heard the saying, "The book was so good I couldn't put it down?" Same with writing. Wife: "Dinner is ready." Me: "I'm finishing an article, I'll eat later."

    When I'm writing for clients and having trouble staying focused, I take a break after each article. Just standing up and stretching, a bathroom break, or a trip to the kitchen for a snack or drink is enough to rejuvenate me for another 500 words.

    I don't know why some are hating on coffee. When I've got to write all night, it works well. Sure, you're incurring a debt that must be paid back sometime, but its great for emergencies.

    Besides, caffeine improves brain function (and athletic performance but that doesn't have much to do with writing).

    Get interested and excited about what you are doing.

    Don't think of it like work, or you will never get the work done.

    Instead, think about the joy of helping other people with their problems, and the words will flow unobstructed by sleep or anything else.

          That won't necessarily work. When i fall asleep at my desk I lean forward, not backward. I mean really, how many times can you wake up to see QWERTY stamped on your forehead.

            HA! Good point, I hadn't thought of that.

            Okay, how about one of those alarms you wear over the ear that detects when your head is drooping? You could set it to activate the most repulsive song you can think of (the Macerana perhaps?) so that you won't DARE to fall asleep.

            Or perhaps a noose tied to the back of your chair that chokes you as your head droops forward...

            Or maybe a stick wedged between your computer monitor and your forehead...

            The possibilities are endless. Maybe we've discovered a new niche and we should write an ebook on this. ;-)

    I'd say:
    *Make sure you understand the subject you are writing about.
    *Make sure you truly understand the words you are using (dictionaries work wonders).

    And having said that -
    *Don't believe in having sleep issues. Want an example? Nothing sends people faster into a sleep mode than a program they watch about a topic they do not fully understand (not to mention the walls-shaking yawns).
    *Stay away from refined sugars (pizza anybody?).
    *Save your life and keep any soda or pre-made flavored liquid within a mile radius (unless you need something to clean the toilet with, at which point cola would do wanders).

    Rather - Take emergenC and every so often go out and look at the skies or something far away from you (sometime I think my eyes are getting crossed from this monitor-looking process...).

    Tested and proven.

      Don't do it!!!

      Get someone else to write them that actually enjoy doing it.

      The only way you will ever be really successful is to :

      1. give the boring jobs to others
      2. give the jobs you don't have skills to do to others
      3. give any other job you can define a process for to others

      Then concentrate on what befits your business

        Writing articles is a very boring job, aside from boring its very draining. A good way to keep you awake while writing those boring stuff is refrain from sitting at your chair for a long time, take time to stand up and do some stretching and walking, this keeps you alert and you can regain a little composure to yourself

          If it's boring to write then it's a good bet that it is going to be boring to read - and if it is boring to read it's no good to anybody.

          If writing articles always sends you to sleep then you need to find another way of getting content.

          But consider your lifestyle first, if you are trying to write in the middle of the night after a busy day then perhaps you are just tired. If you're trying to write multiple articles one after another then you probably need to take a break, have a drink, walk around, find a subject that really interests you.

          But if it's all always boring, don't do it!

    Take a break between each article and get your heart rate up. Also stretch briefly to increase circulation.

    Focus on eating foods that don't lower your energy such as raw fruits and vegetables. Stick to those up until dinner. This will leave you with a lot more energy for business during the day.

      Caffeine usually helps in many cases, and coffee is definitely a much safer alternative to those amped up energy drinks. You don't get that much of crash with coffee, especially if you drink it black without any sugar or milk/cream.

    I want to assume you're writing in the evening after a full day of some other type of work? Is that correct?

    Maybe you should try writing at a different time of the day? In the morning (get up early); during your lunch break; right after work?

    Caffeine works great, otherwise, pay attention to your natural body rhythms. You are more alert and energetic during certain times of the day than others. For instance, I know that I do my best writing in the morning and afternoons.

    By 6pm, I'm not much good for article writing.

    Figure out when you are able to write at your best. Sounds like you're trying to write when your body wants to do nothing but rest.

    Maybe article writing is not for you. Just because it is an effective marketing method for some doesn't mean that it will work for all. If you are falling asleep 'trying' to be productive, then this may not be for you.

    Suggestion?

    Maybe look for something that is more appealing to you. If you enjoy what you are doing then it won't feel like work and your results will come much quicker.

    I can tell you what worked for me while writing articles at 1 AM after working a 15 hour day for the military - PUSH-UPS!!

    Everytime I got tired I would stop writing take a minute to relax and then knock out as many push-ups as I could and then take another minute to catch my breath and start writing again.

    I used that method for years and it always kept me awake and motivated to complete my writing. Additionally, I developed one heck of a physique from doing them -

    Caffiene, write early in the morning when your brain is still awake, and do something that you love.

    Seriously, I drink (and I know this is bad but it's my only "habit") 2L (or 8- 8 ounce cups) of Pepsi a day. I write first thing in the morning, or like someone else suggested when I haven't slept in days (as I have manic episodes, and these are often my most productive best writing periods). I also take at least one 30-45 minute walk a day, so that I have fresh air and am not house bound all day long. If I find I'm having problems writing or staying motivated, I get up and walk away from the computer.

    And I have never fallen asleep at the keyboard.

    Best wishes,

    Just a suggestion to consider....QUIT WRITING BORING CRAP!!

    Not trying to say your articles are badly written, but I'm going to guess I know exactly the type of article you are writing.

    You are writing search engine fodder. You are writing articles to fulfill the desire for ranking on the search engines.

    Try this....Get opinionated. Plan to upset 30% of your audience while trying to get the other 70% cheering your efforts..Tick a few people off. Get excited, take a stand. It is hard to sleep when you are writing from emotional energy instead of writing to feed Google. (Yes, you can be opinionated about almost anything...)

    Second item...rotate between writing an article and turning it into a video. Take the article you just completed, throw the content into either a slide show video with a voice over, or do a talking head video. Get animated vocally during your video, and if you are actually sitting in front of the cam get your hands moving.

    The video step allows you to be actively working on promotion while you create energy before starting on the next idea...

    If those ideas do not work then I suggest calling an escort service...

      Assuming your articles are interesting and not boring, it might be an energy issue. Get enough sleep every night (eight hours of sleep, look up melatonin) and exercise. Go for a brisk walk after work that gets your blood pumping -- iPod and dance music help -- before sitting down to write. Every time you start getting tired, get up, drink a glass of water, and do a few jumping jacks.

    If you need more energy generally, stay away from stimulants - instead, get some exercise, fresh air and follow a good, clean diet. Stay hydrated too.

    If you're becoming bored by writing the articles, you either need to find a new niche, a new marketing tactic or outsource the work - we're all supposed to be designing our dream lives here, there's no space for boredom.

      Okay, this is admittedly slightly off topic, but here's how to stay awake in seminars...

      Do you keep falling asleep in round-tables and seminars?
      What about those long and boring conferences?

      Here's a way to change all of that.

      1. Before (or during) your next meeting, seminar, or conference call, prepare yourself by drawing a square. I find that 5" x 5" is a good size. Divide the card into columns - five across and five down. That will give you 25 one-inch blocks.

      2. Write one of the following words/phrases in each of the 25 blocks (mix them up if you like)

      * synergy

      * strategic fit

      * core competencies

      * best practice

      * bottom line

      * revisit

      * expeditious

      * to tell you the truth (or "the truth is")

      * 24/7

      * out of the loop

      * benchmark

      * value-added

      * proactive

      * win-win

      * think outside the box

      * fast track

      * result-driven

      * empower (or empowerment)

      * knowledge base

      * at the end of the day

      * touch base

      * mindset

      * client focus(ed)

      * paradigm

      * game plan

      * leverage

      3. Check off the appropriate block when you hear one of those words/phrases.

      4. When you get five blocks horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, stand up and shout "BULLSH*T!"

      Testimonials from satisfied "Bullsh*t Bingo" players:

      · "I had been in the meeting for only five minutes when I won." - Adam, Atlanta

      · "My attention span at meetings has improved dramatically." - David, Florida

      · "What a gas! Meetings will never be the same for me after my first win." - Dan, New York City

      · "The atmosphere was tense in the last process meeting as 14 of us waited for the fifth box." - Ben, Denver

      · "The speaker was stunned as eight of us screamed 'BULLSH*T!' for the third time in two hours." - Paul, Cleveland

      Enjoy your seminars... But try it at your own risk.

    This is my suggestion:

    1. Write about things that interest you (of course, not always an option)
    2. Use a "resource file." Search your topic and grab/mashup lots of relevant content. Build article ideas and most importantly outlines--headlines and sub-headings
    3. Queue up several article outlines in a folder.
    4. Start writing.
    5. Write without any consideration of perfection or correction. This is a BIG deal and very hard to really do.
    6. Set a time limit. (Egg timer is a great tool).
    7. Stop. Save. Lay all the new articles aside for a day.
    8. Edit.
    9. Deliver.
    10. Use these articles as a resource file for future articles.

    Oh, and coffee really helps!

      I didn't used to like writing articles myself, but it's all about mindset.

      I know, I know, everyone says that, but it is.

      Obviously your tired and bored because of what you are writing about.

      I done an article marketing course one day, where the guy taught you
      how to get in the right mindset by changing things around...

      You had to picture yourself, as you were writing the article, dressed as
      a clown!

      Seriously, big red nose, face paints, dopey big shoes, water squirting out a flower, the whole shebang.

      This would make the experience more enjoyable apparently.

      Anyway, I never done it ha ha ha, but if you try it out let me know how
      you get on!

      Instead I try to write articles about content that interests me, and I
      never write when I dont feel that my creative juices are flowing.

    Break your article into small parts. Section it off and complete them one at a time. It's easy to get discouraged if you think of writing an article as one giant piece, but it's much easier to take in if you provide your content in numbered format (like a top list), or simply designate it into sections that represent different themes or thoughts on the same subject.

      Glad you guys bumped this, reminded me to thank Oscarte for the videos and the book recommendation.

      To me its mainly about getting into a mindset that I need to get some work done. What I need to do doesn't matter, though I do need to write a lot of content for my store.

      What motivates me is the Paypal receipts in my inbox. Knowing that I can make this work, but just needing to stop being my own enemy and doing it.

      I do have one big tip.

      When you are extra tired and feel the need to do some work, like I am right about now, make an effort to do some research and create an outline for future articles.

      When I am tired I find my creativity really plummets, so I do this as a failsafe. It allows me to get some work done, and ends up making me much more productive when it comes time to actually write the articles. I can spend an hour outlining half a dozen articles tonight, and it would probably only take about an hour to write them all tomorrow when I am refreshed.

      That simple step allows me to sleep easy at night knowing that I am doing something positive to further my business.

    I find that working early in the morning with a cup of green tea or black tea gives me a good kick to start writing and isnt as overpowering as coffee for me. Because with coffee I tend to crash about 2 hours later. Also write down the time periods that you plan to write and stick with them, everytime you want to sleep or get up just look at your time period sheet.

      I think Doug has some good ideas and it is similar to how I like to do things when I write.

      -I identity the time when my brain is most active/alert. For me it is early morning. I now go to bed earlier and get up at 5am.

      -my prime writing time is 1-3 hours when I am most alert in the morning

      -when I am not writing, I like to prep, research and outline future writing projects. Also I like to proofread, if I'm not too tired. That prepares me for the next writing shift.

      -I've found it's a good idea to set quotas/goals ahead of time. For example, I'll have 3 finished articles done by the end of my shift tomorrow.
