What is the paypal sandbox?

and how can it be used to marketers advantage?

is it the same as the google sandbox?:confused:

    The paypal sandbox is real, and it is for programmers to test payment software, before running real transactions.

    Sandbox IS a real technical term that refers to some sort of test area or safe area.

    As I recall, for paypal, it is SEPARATE, meaning you have to apply for the sandbox area. So NO, actually, NO paypal account has a sandbox. They are assigned to people, not accounts. Think of the paypal account as a duplicate server that isn't really hooked up to credit cards. And its ONLY value is to TEST!

      Hi entry,

      Paypal Sandbox is not a marketing tool per say.

      It's a useful tool when it comes to testing software/script functionality before going live.
      Although it was created for developers, anyone can register to test the functionality of Paypal payment scripts before going live.

      What your sandbox account does is provide you with a virtual full-functioning Paypal account as a seller, that allows the use of a virtual working credit card system (you simply use virtual numbers, not a real credit card) as if you were a buyer/an end-user during your testings.

      So you are able to test your script/software to see exactly how it works starting from your webpage and you will see from inside your account the email that Paypal sends to the end user/buyer and to you/the seller, if the purchase was successful.

      For this to work, you will need to use for your sandbox account the same Paypal email address as in your Paypal form on the webpage so that sandbox can detect the email once you click on the Buy Now button.
      Also you will need to use the sandbox link: https://www.sandbox.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr (note that this is only possible if the software/script you are using allows you to temporarily modify this link).

      As a non-developer you can use it to test any script that allows Paypal payments and check things like IPN return links on thank you pages, etc..

      Basically, for marketers, this is useful for testing new Paypal scripts and if things work well both for you and your customers.

    So the sandbox can't be use to test PayPal buttons on our site? If not, what is the way to test new payment buttons installed on site. Seems like PayPal would have an easy method set-up for this.

      No, the sandbox can be used to test your site.

      My testing is in 3 phases:

      1) Run tests with buttons wired to PayPal sandbox until it is working reliably

      2) Run test with buttons wired to real PayPal but with product price set to $0.50

      3) Run final test with buttons wired to real PayPal with correct prices

      Each test should involves the whole sales lifecycle: signup form, sale, order receipt, welcome email, membership site login, delivery notification, confirmed optin, follow-up sequence, cancellation, refund, etc basically all the customer contact points. This approach cuts down refunds and support calls.

      The reason do to this in the sandbox is to avoid creating lots of noise in your live PayPal account. It is not good to generate lots of refunds on your products just because you are testing
