You CAN Make Your Content TOO Good LOL

Well, once again, I am my own worst enemy LOL.

I was just doing some stat checking at some of my blogs.

Traffic is great...Average time is more than 5 minutes, which means they're
at least reading one article. I've got some people spending 20 minutes at
some of my blogs. Thanks folks, you're too kind.

But nobody is clicking on any of my Adsense ads

Oh product sales are great. But Adsense? I don't think people even know
they're there.

I might as well just remove them.

So the lesson here is simple.

If you want people to come to your site just to click on your Adsense
ads, don't give them anything that's really great to read...just good enough
that they don't think it's total crap and leave in disgust.

Is this a fine line to walk?

I am finding out that it is a very fine line.

However, if you do write really killer content, make sure you have a
corresponding resource box at the end of the article with a strong call
to look at what you have to offer.

If you can do that...you most certainly can kill the Adsense.

Oh, and for what it's worth? My throwaway blogs, the ones designed just
to get Adsense (I've dumbed down my writing)...they work.

Go figure.

Hope this helps somebody.

Me? I'm getting a big laugh out of this today.

the trick is that when they are done with your site they should "leave" by clicking on something like adsense or an affiliate link to keep them making you money as they check out...

So true Steven. If the content is great there really is no reason to click on Adsense, or anything else for that matter.

Great writing will leave the reader wanting more, such as a product you are promoting.

    Hey Steven,

why mess around with adsense you could have a plugin pulling
clickbank ads to your blog instead which will make you shitloads
more even on the blogs you don't work on too much...

      Steven,

It sounds to me that if you want to get your blog to do well with AdSense then you'd better start outsourcing your article writing for that blog to those that ain't so hot on the article writing front!

You need to have mediocre content that beats around the bush (ie keywords) but never really answers the visitor's question to have success with Adsense. The content has to be good enough to pass a visual inspection by Google's Adsense team, so it can't be total nonsense but it can be something that's torturous to read. The goal is to get the visitor to keep looking for their answer and 20-30% do so through an Adsense link.

If you want to answer the visitor's question, then go for affiliate offers or your own products/services where you can lead them directly toward your target, something you can't do with Adsense.

  • Hi Steven,

It is a very fine line. I had written a thread about that very issue on the Adsense board posing the question of whether "bad" content actually does better for Adsense than "good" content. A rhetorical question - "bad" content almost always does better. Not only is there less 'distraction', it almost promotes ad clicking in order to 'get away' from lousy content.

    Steven,

Once upon a time, I thought I would get rich with adsense and niche sites. I was putting up a site on turtles (I know, don't ask) and I had just started doing it when I was interrupted by another project. I was reminded about it when I saw it was making money in adsense and outperformed some of my other sites. Here's the content:

turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles
turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles
turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles
turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles
turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles
turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles
turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles, turtles

Now, what do you think of that content? Too much keyword stuffing

      How about this one...

I'm not disappointed to see that in the pursuit of articles about turtles that you have done a crafty expansion of turtle talk. The first thing you need to do is choose your turtles and then you can sleep just fine at night. You'll slap your forehead when you figure out turtles. It is difficult to find the right red ear turtle although the basics are straight forward. Finding the right turtle is one in a million. At the end of the day every small bit count but you'll find that they like to talk about it a lot. Water turtles does not necessarily mean it was adapted to this. The chances are that you've just found a good turtle. I have discovered an amazing avenue to get turtles trained even faster than I did the old fashioned way. If you really start dedicating yourself to your pet turtles you'll start seeing some serious results. It turns out that there are uncommon practices that underlie turtle training. Is it not plain to you? This is confusing to you I know. It's very clear that sooner or later that this kind of turtle info will be banned. We have to be realistic about turtles. I've found them all to be true blue pets in my own experience. I rarely, if ever, see turtles like that.

          Great post Steven,

I've also noticed something similar happen as well.

Here's another angle to the same "quality can hurt" concept:

          Example:

If a searcher wants a SPECIFIC thing only. Let's say they want a "Healthy 7 Layer Salad Recipe"

If you have a site that provides that for them...

          Then guess what?

They go on your page. Get the info they want. Then they leave.

What does that do to your stats?

It gives you a really high bounce rate.

And most stat counters won't even register that as "time on site" so it will register as 0:00 time spent. (Due to the fact that stat software can't measure when someone hits the back button on browsers.)

          Anyhow.

If you have something perfect for what the searcher is looking for... then they have no reason to stick around.

They get what they want, and POOF they're gone.

If you give them only partial info, or make them click around, then you may get better stats. (In regards to bounce rate, pages viewed, and time on site.)

          Something to think about.

Funny how great minds run in similar tracks...

Not long ago, I read a thread that mentioned an article distribution service, so I checked it out. Learned they have a plugin for WP to load articles to the blog as drafts, and all you have to do is approve or delete them.

I put the plugin on an old Adsense blog that was barely breaking even, and started getting articles. At first, I held out for the "good stuff". Then I said to myself, "Self, screw it. Let's see what happens when we put some of the so-so stuff up..."

Page views went up, bounce rate went down and clicks started rising.

Sometimes I have to really force myself to hit that publish button, and I'm still rejecting 1/3 to 1/2 of what's submitted, but I have to agree with your conclusions.

For any article marketers out there looking for a formula to getting articles rejected, here's what works on me...

            1. Start by paying a non-English speaker a dollar or two to write a 500 word article on something they can't possibly know anything about.

            2. Only give them 1 or 2 keywords to work into the article. Ignore LSI, keyword stuffing rules!

            3. Take that article and run it through a second-rate (or worse) article spinner at least once.

            4. Finish it off with a resource box hawking diet pills or "male enhancement" products or some other totally unrelated site killer.

            5. When your article is rejected, make sure you come to the Warrior Forum and whine about how I'm being unfair for rejecting you - it'll make my day...

Tip: Can't afford an article spinner? Go to a translation site and translate your article into a foreign language, take the result and translate it back to English. Should be every bit as good...

Most of the time, once is enough. If you want to be an overachiever, though, try this...

                English to Language 1
                Language 1 to English
                Result to Language 2
                Language 2 to English

Advanced tip #1: pick 2 languages with vastly different grammatical structures, such as Russian and Chinese.

Advanced tip #2: If you're trying to produce articles in the minimum amount of time, you can go English > Language 1 > Language 2 > English.

  • I stopped doing adsense a few years ago when I realized I should be doing writing about things that had products behind them that I could sell sell sell.

Then it pays to write great content. I have a friend with a credit card review site that converts like crazy and the affiliate links are tiny and at the end of each review. No big red button.

People love great content and its the best way to make sales, just make sure you have a site about a product you can sell hehe

I noticed the other day that one of my 'throw up PLR and forget it' sites was doing better than expected, so I took a look at it to see what the attraction was (I hadn't done much in the way of reading the stuff before I put it there). I was mortified to realise that it was crap of the very highest order, and put sorting it out onto the 'when I get round to it' part of the mental to-do list.

After reading this, I'm tempted to leave it there. Or maybe just add a few turtles
