How I Increased Revenue In Under 30 Seconds...

Sounds ridiculous doesn't it...but it's true. One change I made recently to my marketing strategy created a big boost in revenue (without having to increase traffic) and actually cut down on my costs.

I am a big email marketer. It's such a powerful business model. I've always prided myself at having a high conversion rate through my sales funnel. In the past, I've tried to perfect every step of the customer process. For my business, this goes something like this:

Articles --> Squeeze Page --> Email Opens --> Click Email Link --> Sales Page

I attempted to make every step convert at it's highest. I offered free products for email addresses, catchy headlines for email opens, and elaborate stories with good link placement for email clicks. All of these things increased the amount of people that saw my sales page.

The thing I realized lately is that I didn't need to perfect every step. One step could have a much larger impact than any other. The step that could really make a difference was the sales page conversion.

Where a sales page of mine might of seen 100 viewers per day and converted at 2%...I wanted it to convert at 5%. I had no desire to generate more people per day...that was getting tiresome. I would rather see a higher conversion and have to do less.

For me to accomplish this, I thought I must get more targeted with my viewers. I shouldn't go for the highest conversion rate, but go for the most targeted viewer base ever.

To do this, I made one simple change that completely baffled me with great results. Instead of enticing viewers to give you their email for free gifts, ask the reader to give you their email to receive your updates.

This simple change made my subscribers much more targeted. 100% of them were readers that actually wanted to hear what I had to say. There were no freebie seekers. I gave each subscriber gifts for signing up...but they were not promoted on the squeeze page.

This change caused the conversion rate of the squeeze page to decrease...but my daily revenue was much higher. My conversion rate on the sales page had sky rocketed due to targeting my viewers even more than I was before.

For one list, I was able to generate $12,000 revenue from 135 subscribers. The reason for such success was due to me selling a high ticket item at $2,000 a pop, but you could do the same quite easily in any market. HINT: Teach a class for a month

Test this out in your market. You could see a big boost in your conversions which could mean a big boost in your cash flow. It's worked for me quite well in a few markets lately.

Hi Pete, by updates, do you mean newsletters?

Because this is just the squeeze page, right? The prospects
haven't bought any of your product yet.

So I'm guessing that in addition to discouraging freebie seekers, you are also encouraging people who wouldn't opt in for the freebie but would opt in for updates?

Because it can't just be that you're weeding out the freeloaders, so to speak, because that would decrease sign ups but not affect conversions. So by making this change, you must be getting people who aren't interested in the freebie, but are interested in content.

      Do I have that right?

Right on...it's not only freebie seekers I weed out. Only those who want more will sign up. Which in turn is going to cause conversions to be much higher.

Yes, I mean your actual newsletter...or emails you would send them.

Interesting result. Kind of the opposite of what most of us do.

I do that on my download page giving me a buyers list. These convert very highly. Since they bought from me before they do it again, and again, and again. They know what to expect from me.

So the buyers list is really the one that will convert the best. But your list of non freebie seekers is bound to get better results than those that are just looking for free stuff.

    Nice work!

I do this as well on the buyer's pages, but those are going to convert highly no matter what because they just purchased a product.

My next move is to eliminate freebies all together for email addresses. I can sell a small product for $1-$7 instead. This will more than likely increase conversions even more. The freebies will still be on my website but offered more as pillar articles and downloads for nothing in exchange.

The key is keeping the right balance of traffic to conversion rate. If I have a conversion rate of 100%, but only get 1 subscriber a month that's not going to work either. I will increase conversion rate as much as possible until the lower traffic numbers start producing lower revenue...

NEWBIE HINT: ...or I will just bump up the cost of the product to make up for the lower amount of sales.

Preach it, brother! CONVERSIONS CONVERSIONS CONVERSIONS needs to replace TRAFFIC TRAFFIC TRAFFIC as the common mantra.

Get the conversions up and THEN concentrate on the traffic. Most of us do it backwards and end up wasting most of that traffic. It's a shame.

    Great OP, Travis!

The power of a highly targeted list is truly wonderful! This surely shows how better quality is than quantity. You have done a pretty nice job with your technique.

Travis, Sorry, I'm being really dense this morning. (Maybe not enough caffeine yet.)

You are asking readers to submit their email in exchange for updates. Updates to what?

If it is not a "free" something, what is being updated? Do you tell a story or give a tactic on the squeeze page, and offer updates to that?

I clicked on the link in your sig and the squeeze page promises a free book. How would you change that page to one that offered updates instead of the free ebook?

    Thanks,

    :-Don

      Hey Don,

Thanks for your question. Updates was a poor word choice. I ask them for their email in exchange for joining the newsletter and to receive weekly emails from me. This is instead of asking for their email in exchange for a freebie.

From clicking in my sig, you will come to a squeeze page offering a freebie. This does contradict what I'm talking about in this post, but this is 100% because of the traffic source...the Warrior Forum.

I have many many sales funnels out there. The squeeze page and particular sales funnel the reader comes to depends solely on the traffic source. Like I mentioned above, I create the best possible balance between traffic numbers and conversions for highest revenue.

Since I write about many different topics in the internet marketing niche on this forum, I can't target my traffic as highly as I would like. This makes me offer a freebie so that the balance of conversions and viewers is at it's best. The list readers go through from this forum covers many different aspects of internet marketing and is more general than the sales funnels I'm speaking about.

Now, if I wrote a guest post on a blog devoted to traffic generation, I would send the viewers to a squeeze page solely targeted towards traffic generation. This would allow me to ask for their email addresses in exchange for my weekly emails with a higher conversion rate.

This is yet another thing that you should test in your sales funnel. I'm sure it wouldn't have the same effect if I used it in every squeeze page and I every market I have. It did give me great results recently though.
