Hey guys,

There is a certain member of this forum that continually belittles and antaginates other Warrior Members, but I have no idea how to issue an Infraction.

Would somebody kindly inform me how to do this please?
Regards,
Rob

Just to the left of the post, in the member info block, there are three icons. The center one is yellow/red squares---click those.

Rob, You can't see the Infraction button on your own posts although under the members
name to the left of their post(near the botton)you will see this icon .

When you need to warn/give someone an Infraction you should press the icon and
then select the proper reason for doing so.

    Hope that helps,
    Have a Great Day!
    Michael

PS, If you feel the need to practice the you should do so Caleb above but not me

Ah, you must be talking about me...

The Infraction button looks like this:

You can Report a post, thread, or private message to the mods with the Report button that looks like this:

Don't be afraid to use either one. My critics aren't afraid to use theirs.

There is a certain person here who irritates me... a respected person with thousands of posts, but he is responsible for a lot of Trollish activity, IMO. But I don't hit the button, even though I have been tempted many times. I have found it better to just let it pass. I just ignore those posts when I see them.

It's my view that I have chosen the right thing to do. Behavior off the charts should be tolerated, IMO, and it needs to be reallllllly extreme before action is taken. Everyone talks about freedom of speech, and I agree with that of course. But in America, we also have a Constitutional right of "freedom of association." I choose not to associate with Trolls. Often it is just better to walk away.

I suspect that freedom of speech is not really one of our rights here on the forum.

While most of the time it is better to just walk away, sometimes it is more fun to stay around and poke em with a stick.

I have been hesitant many times of giving an infraction to someone, mainly because I would hate to have them retaliate and just give me one or ride my arse afterwards out of spite.

I think that there should be somekind of retaliation security, such as if someone gets a infraction from someone, then the one getting the infraction, cannot give back an infraction to the one who just gave them a infraction, for at least a period of time, such as at least 1 month?

That might not have ever happened here? But if it did, I could see it being a pain in the arse, having someone following you around and giving you infractions on your posts and threads....

Happens all the time. We had two bouts of "No, YOU'RE a jerk" yesterday alone. A quick warning was sufficient to stop it.

That's one reasons infractions have no power. They're already misused on occasion. We're not going to give random members that kind of authority.

Paul, thanks alot for the info, I wasn't really sure of the power/weight that an infraction carried on the forum.

Just that someone can see that you have been given one and it doesn't seem to go away, even after it expires is enough possible to ruin your credibility with some I would think?
          {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3365792].message }}
          • Profile picture of the author Paul Myers
            Steve,

They shouldn't. No-one with any sense pays attention to expired infractions. How much credibility can you give a tool that can be used by any random person who wanders in?

That said, if someone starts an infraction barrage against a member that hasn't earned it, and keeps it up as a means of harassment, we will delete the infractions. And take action against the account being used for the abuse.

That doesn't stop the random psychos, but it's an effective deterrent against people who want to continue to participate here under recognizable names.

[Edit: We used to be able to delete infractions. Doesn't appear we can any more, if they've been reversed. But then, the visitor can't read the comments that went with it anyway.]

It is a pain in the ass, when people chase you around serving infractions and getting your threads deleted. LOL

But neither will be the end of the world.

When you are willing to stand up in a crowd, you must also be willing to have people throw tomatoes at you.

More often, when people are clicking the Infraction button on my posts, they are mad only because I told them something they did not want to hear.

And anyone willing to look at my Infraction history and seek the reason for that history will soon realize that I probably entered into a contest of wits with an unarmed person, who felt their only defense was clicking the Infraction button.

Retaliation Infractions and Retaliatory Reporting are so 7th grade... I outgrew that crap more than 30 years ago...

But if someone wants to chase my coat tails and throw darts at me whenever they can, then if they are throwing darts at me, they are leaving others alone.

Personally, I honestly believe that use of the Infraction button will often tell more about the person who pushed it, than it will tell about the person who received the Infraction.

That reminds me of an incident when I was about 11 playing this game with my brother where we stood about 3 or 4 meters apart and threw darts near each others feet. If you moved your feet ie. jumped out the way, you lost. We only played the game twice and of course the inevitable happens and he threw a dart that lodged in my foot. I looked down and saw my white sock rapidly turning red.

I was so shocked that the pain didn't fully register straight away and then I looked up at my bro who was staring back in amazement and concern, wondering what I was going to do. He must have seen a crazed look in my eyes because the next moment he bolted down the stairs and out the house with me in hot pursuit and I chased him up the road wielding a club-hammer Braveheart-syle, screaming obscenities at him. Ahh, those were the days.

Using the "infraction' button doesn't really do a whole lot anyway. It just shows they pissed someone off and really that's about it as far as I know. If you report them, it is then up to the mods to decide if something should be done about whatever they did. If it makes you feel better to give an infraction, and helps you let off your steam, then by all means use the button.

        A couple of quick things...

First, as was mentioned above, no-one gets banned over infractions given to them. Those might get someone looking at the behavior, but reporting it in the normal way is more likely to get the situation looked at.

That said, don't start ongoing feuds using them. That can get you some time off. A single use for a single incident is fine, but not a flood of nonsense where everyone is screaming and no-one's saying anything useful. The PM and infraction systems are not to be used as means of abuse of other members.

As far as that other thing... Anyone who brings up the concept of freedom of speech as though it was an absolute and unrestrictable right needs to review their 8th grade civics texts.

Or, for a more concrete lesson, go into a library or police station, which are public property, and start shouting, swearing loudly, accusing people of things without proof, or generally being a jerk to the other people there.

See how far your "absolute right" holds up.

Then try it in a private place of business. If you don't stop when asked, armed officers of the law will show up and give you a lesson in your rights.

          Paul,

Here is an example I came up with once to deal with a troll who was way out of balance on my own modest forum (not Internet-marketing related). Feel free to use it later if you wish--as, judging from the comments and the effect at the time, it worked well with my public.

A forum is often like a restaurant. If a person claiming he has a right to free speech starts banging on his plate, singing loudly, insulting and goading people at neighboring tables, using a lot of profanity, being generally obnoxious in a loud voice, etc., he spoils the environment for the others.

People usually want to get their nourishment in a friendly setting. When fighting and confusion start, they will stop and look, but they will also stop eating. If it gets really bad, they will leave. If this repeats too often, the only people who will keep coming back are those who like fights, not those who like a good meal. The folks who want to eat will go elsewhere.

So it is in the owner's interest to keep the environment more appropriate for eating and not so much for obnoxious loud-mouths. He keeps the target public he has earned that way.

          Ditto for forums.

But, forum-wise, to keep the environment from becoming stifling, I have found that a degree of flexibility is a good way to go. Otherwise, the best and brightest--who get quite passionate and even lose it at times--will leave and not return.

Thus the most satisfactory principle in my view is neither free speech, nor micro-managing members, but instead balance with reasonable traffic cops. Good balance makes for a good environment. And good traffic cops make for good balance.

This seems to be what guides The Warrior forum policies. In fact, it's one of the reasons I come here to study.

On a side note, one of the creative ways I came up with to deal with good folks who have a trolling itch is to embarrass them. I made a section called "The Garbage Pile." When they start going off, I throw offending posts that have crossed the flexibility line into the Garbage Pile and there they stay with the original author's names on them.

And I restrict certain rapid fire posters--those with more contentious opinions than substance--to five posts per 24 hours. These are folks who often start by making 25-30 posts or so a day with a certain degree of snarkiness. This throws the posting levels off balance at my present traffic rates.

Within my context (philosophy), these things worked pretty well at cutting down on bad behavior without running off the sincere and/or brilliant folks. Interestingly enough, I have not had to ban hardly anyone. People who like to be bad seem to get bored and move on when they can't have center stage for someone else's audience.

I'm not sure that these measures would work here, though, since a commercial interest changes things a lot.

So I'm just sayin', not tellin'...

            Michael,

Excellent analogy. To extend it a bit... If you go to a restaurant and people sit around discussing the issues of the day, debating and disagreeing in a civil and intelligent fashion, it becomes much more interesting to the folks who enjoy that. Pretty quick, you've got a place that regularly attracts people who think clearly and respect others.

From the perspective of a restaurant owner, that wouldn't suck.

The Garbage Pile idea is one we've discussed here before, but never with such an appropriate name. I may swipe that.

I'm a new guy around these parts as one might notice by the lack of posts. I have spent a reasonable amount of time exploring all the various discussions and threads. The high school comment was interesting. As a whole, this is definitely one of the better forums I have found. (thanks to potpiegirl)

I am just getting started in the IM business and have found a wealth of information using the search feature and would like to thank folks for their help. I have certainly seen a thing or two, or forty that was less than worthy of this forum. Just sayin...

In every bag of chips there are a couple of burnt ones. Goes with the turf.

This thread has been the most interesting I've read so far. You can get a good feel for people with a bit of reading. I think I'll stay around. I reckon' I'm old enough to take a walk in the park without stepping in the doggie messes.

To be honest, I would spend more time using the 'Report Spam' button - there are still WAY too many spammers going undetected with their thin, repetitive posts, articles copied wholesale from other sources and their frantic posting rate (one every couple of minutes). They are pretty easy to spot really, yet I reported one earlier - representing a very well-known 'Adsense alternative' company - the user had posted dozens of posts over a couple of years containing nothing but pitches for their service (yep, not a SINGLE useful post). How are they going unnoticed?!

So, less infracting, more spam reporting, that's all I am saying. Seems more constructive somehow...

Well, this thread reminded me that there was another person I've been meaning to add to my ignore list (he is only the 2nd person to make the list).

I don't understand why those who are ALWAYS asinine jerks don't just get banned. They are like poison to the community. Perhaps the problem is that once you start, it would be hard to stop.

    Anyway...

If somebody always bothers you, don't give them an infraction, just set it up to ignore thier posts. Here's how...

User CP > Edit Options > Edit Ignore List > Add a member to your list > Okay

Doing this will still let you know that they made a post in a thread, but it will be collpased, and you have to click a button to view it. I have to say, it's a nice feature, and I am looking forward to not hearing anymore jackassery from the 2nd person on my ignore list.

If it's consistent enough and long enough, they do. But you have to remember that you're talking about a very subjective point there. In order to avoid becoming ridiculous about the policy, it's wise to give people more room.

LD Carter's one-note symphony is moving him closer to the line all the time. And, of course, when he finally gets banned for it, he'll scream how evil we are, and that it's proof that he was right all along. He'll never acknowledge that the problem isn't what he said, but that he so seldom said anything else.

Well, your post perfectly proves your point. He wasn't the person I added to my list.

Yes, I understand that it's subjective. If it were up to me, the two people on my list would be banned. But then I wonder who would take their place, in comparison; it could be a very slippery slope.

So, I will continue to reserve the ignore list for a select few, and also try to remember that those on the borderline may serve a purpose by making other people look even better.

    Paul,

You may want to remove that second name from your comment above, as there are a few people on here with it.

People will all identify with the person they know that has it, and assume that person has been doing something bad.

For instance, I get that you are hinting at a person in this thread (could be wrong) but I automatically think of my mate with the same second name, as he is a member here.

What a load of crap! But then, since I'm a "senior member", I probably only said that because I play favorites.

I still haven't figured out why certain people are always making comments like this but still come here. If the place sucks so bad, why not find another forum to play in?

Oh, yeah. Most just want to sell something.

      Great analogy.

Of course, if you think about it, there may be a few folks around here who are clueless about the analogy, because it is equally frivolous to slam down the cordless telephone.

Ah, I see. I misunderstood you earlier and thought perhaps I was mistaken about the rules.

I didn't mean to imply that said poster pitched inappropriately. I never saw that either. But that's not the only way to sell things here, just the most obvious.

I could be totally wrong on that in this case, too. Again was not meaning just that particular poster. It just seems like there are a few who are always railing about "favoritism" and "senior members" and other beefs they have with the forum.

I truly don't see the reason why they keep coming here if they really have that low opinion of the place. Other than getting new business somehow, I can't comprehend the motive.

I know that when I don't like a place, I just stop going there.

There are more than one, certainly. The motivation for that particular type of post is often summed up in three little letters: ego.

We've had many people who contribute(d) greatly to the forum over the years who had the same habit. For some of them it was a sincere concern. For others, gunslinger syndrome. And for others, just a play for attention.

As long as they don't push it to the point where they become too much more destructive than constructive, it's not a big deal. And they help others to see that it's okay to disagree. That is the biggest benefit of the folks who seem to have no purpose other than to gripe.

That's not something to be tossed aside lightly.

All LD is doing, though, is encouraging people to spout conspiracy theories in a boorish manner. That is NOT useful.

Infractions don't mean anything. Sometimes they are just used to let the person know they broke a rule. A lot of times the rule was broken out of ignorance.

It is much better then getting banned and it helps the mods. The mods have a difficult enough time deleting my posts.

Difficult? It's a downright pleasure, sir!

Good point about the use of infractions. I think of them as a tap on the shoulder, followed by a discreet "You probably don't want to do that."

                      Richard,

I would have mentioned it, but I've used it so little I forgot it was there.

Then why not get them to put the infraction card icon back under your name?

I didn't think you were the one who removed it. I also imagine you would get more than your fair share of nuisance infractions...so many that it could melt the WF servers.

As a teenager, my father and I would sit and plan things out, little business plans and the like, to teach me how to build and maintain a business.

I used to buy job-lots and he would advise me about my ROI and not spending all the money I made from the sales, as I would need it to reinvest. Ya know, the stuff they aught to teach you in school.

Looking back it was nothing that clever but gave me the desire to be an entrepreneur.

My brother used to sit there and repeat "It'll never work," regular as clockwork. You know what happened? In the end we made him sit in the other room while we got on with making money.

There is a lesson there I think.

The thanks wasn't for the dig at Ken, but for that endearing story of your childhood spent with your dad. I believe I will show this to my husband for him to think about with our two sons. Thank you.

          Caliban,
It isn't because what you do is bad
          Not how I see it.

There are lots of good reasons for behavior some might consider negative. There is no good reason for what LD Carter does in this forum. He is actively destructive.

I consider that bad, in every strict usage of the word.

And I thought you changed your name to Gordon Gekko because of the bad rep you earned from this sort of crap under your LD Carter name, but that doesn't appear to be the case, since you continue with the sniping comments that made you unpopular as LD Carter.

Probably, but I wouldn't really care.

There are 4 or 5 accounts without the infraction button. It appears to be a function of the assigned user group, not an individual setting.

Infractions are part of being alive. Much like scars. Don't have one, probably never tried something really stupid.

I only have one infraction, but man, when I was a kid I got a lot of scars.

Thankfully there was no internetzz in 1920.

Ken, I have an observation here.

There is a rather large and vocal culture of non-violence and non-confrontation in the world.

I am personally not part of it, but I have more or less the same opinion you do: using the infraction and report buttons is like running to the front of the class yelling "teacher, teacher, Billy did a bad thing."

I would much rather insult and berate Billy for his ignorance and weakness and doubtlessly-small penis, but there's a problem.

All those non-violent and non-confrontational people will give you infractions and report you, because they don't like the way you're handling the situation.

And in the end, YOU get banned, not Billy. So Billy continues to purvey his arsehattery all over the forum while you're stuck lurking for a week or more.

So while I agree with you in principle, and would really rather stand up and fight the moron hordes, it's counterproductive. We have a system in place for disciplining the undesirables, and the way you and I would like to handle things is itself considered undesirable. You can either use the system, or have it used on you.

    Just click the button.

    Communities develop in concentric circles.

A small number of people start out, and gather a larger number around them. More members makes the community more attractive, so another group gathers around that group. And so on. And so forth.

Over time, people close to the centre leave, and people farther on the outer rim move a little closer each time people in the center leave.

The people in the centre always have more privileges than the people on the edges.

Allen Says can do whatever he wants; it's his place. Paul Myers can damn near do whatever he wants, too, but not so much as Allen. And on it goes out to someone like Thomas Belknap who has more respect and greater privileges than I do, but at the same time I've got more respect and greater privileges than someone who just joined yesterday.

This is not an injustice. It is the way communities work. They all work this way. You do not have the privileges of senior members because you are not a senior member, and you will not become a senior member until you start acting like one AND continue to do so until you've migrated your way into the "senior member" ring of the community.

It isn't because what you do is bad, but because it is too different from the existing senior members. If you want to be one of them, you have to act like one of them. Just like getting promoted in the corporate world. You can still be yourself, and express your individuality, and be quirky or weird or even abrasive. It just has to fit within acceptable limits.

If your desired personality doesn't fit within the limits of your desired role here, then you need to either alter that personality or find another community.

This is not unfair or a conspiracy. It is simply the raw fact of how communities function. If you can't get where you're going by doing what you're doing, you have to change one or the other.

Hey! It's just like IM. In fact, it's just like pretty much everything!
