After years of no success, finally came up with a decent idea. What do you all think?

As you can tell by my join date, I've been on the warriorforum for years now. Mostly lurking and reading, never really putting in much input, because I really didn't have much.

Ever since I started IM, I dabbled in niches and markets that seemed like the easiest way to make a buck - nothing substantial, and I never made squat.

A year back I was working on a fitness niche and needed fb fans and this guy on another forum was willing to trade himself inviting his 5000 friends and posting my link on his fitness fan fb pages for my wordpress theme. I quickly obliged and saw my fb fanpage soar...

So I thought, why not use a portal for people to trade in social media? I went around googling it, searching for it everywhere to no avail, so then I thought, why not create my own?

So here we are. I recently just launched it. It's basically a portal to swap ANYTHING social media related... everything from contest votes to facebook fan pages.

Social Media Swap - Home Page

I've always listened to the warriors input, so what do you all think?

And I'm having a hard time thinking about ways to build some serious traffic for this site. I dont think SEO would work really well with the engine I'm using to run the site and I don't think spamming links around blogs would do it either. Any advice?

You can always try free Traffic Exchanges to get traffic and kick things off and later do SEO for even more traffic. PM me if you need more info on how to utilise this free traffic generation method which would take too long to explain here.

First lets just all get this out and in the open traffic exchanges only bring in traffic they do not bring in nothing else. So why you spend hours clicking and clicking anc clicking away on others sites you might be lucky to see one in ever 5000 convert. So this is really not a viable traffic building method.

Seo can work if done correctly. What you need to do is start focusing on one keyword that relates to your product/site. Once you can get your page to the top for that keyword then you can branch off and target another.

Why not build a couple of videos showing what your site has to offer. Give them a run down of its features then you should be able to bring in a few prospects pretty wuick. You can then have those prospects promote the site for you.

Offer them some sort of commissions for bringing in buyers of this service. This to me is probably your best bet. Bringing traffic to your site is not limited just because there is no real current market or because some one else has not already thought of it.

Just promote it as a social media site for starters. Promote it as if you where an affiliate to onlywire promoting their product/service.

      Hi Alfred M,

I think there are possibly elements of genius in your idea as long as you keep brainstorming for ingenious ways to get this off the ground.

I can imagine the story in this thread as it is, but with an addition on the end saying 'this is the crazy way that I came up with my million dollar idea' or something like that, with the title changed to reflect that, written at some point in the future if this idea really took off.

It would be poetic (in my opinion) if you got this site off the ground in precisely the same way that the idea was born - if you take the social media based assets that you have and swapped them with others in order to promote your site.

Find someone like the guy with the fan page and give them whatever they want in order for them to share their fans with you. Why not go back to the original person, tell them the story of how they were involved in the creation of the idea, give them something else they want and get their fans to your new site?

It would be fitting proof that your idea is valid if you used your idea to promote itself.

First of all you have a really nice site there, you should be pleased with yourself. I would first join some forums and start engaging in the social media sections of them, you need to first work on letting people know who you are.

You could also do some paid advertising on Facebook, without spamming people you could also contact people on Twitter that would be interested in your service.

It's hit and miss but you could always contact TechCrunch and see if they'll write a report on you, they're always after new start-ups to blog and the spin off from getting an article publish on there can be massive.

    Good Luck,

    Chris

I just had a look at your site and it is very new. You need a few posts to make it look as if it is being used and working, so you might have to conjure up a few posts to begin with.

As others will suggest you can get people with large facebook lists to promote for you. You could look on Fiverr.com for people to promote to their list.

I am sure there will be others saying promote via Twitter and not forgetting article marketing. Write a related article and post to all the major article directories and link back to your site and offer a free report to get people to sign up.

It's a great idea and there are bound to be people jumping onto this idea so you will have to act fast.

Interesting idea. Try contacting some of the "Social Media Experts" that float around WaFo and Facebook. Maybe they will like the idea and help you.

Doesn't Twitter work with the same idea where you reach other peoples followers if they are following you?

    Good luck.

I sincerely would like to thank you all for the input. I'll definitely try the Youtube video and Social Media route.

To go deeper into the business, I don't plan on ever charging for it. I hope it'll be a free portal where I can monetize through PPC ads or affiliate marketing ads.

You should contact either Ryan Deiss (he has an idea incubator thing he's doing now) or Kate Buck - she is one of the most connected facebooker's right now and could broker a lot of the deals for you probably... You can find them both on FB.

Hi Alfred - I love the site and the idea.

It's a critical mass thing. Once you have a few hundred users, word should get around. The challenge is to get that active community going.

One way would be to create a dozen accounts you control, and a few dozen social media accounts, then always be available to swap when someone requests. Then they will think "hey this is an active site, i'll come back"

In addition get your friends to swap using the site to get some activity. A free WSO could help with promotion. Perhaps the WSO is that you will thoroughly bookmark their website in return for joining.

It'll take a lot of work to get this one off the ground, but once it is popular it should grow itself and then you just need to be the moderator.

    Good luck!

If your budget allows it, try PPC. Fastest way to get targeted visitors

I don't know if that'll be a worthy investment though. I'm not neccessarily pushing any sales at all and PPC is expensive.

Ideas are only ideas unless there is a market willing to buy or use what you have to offer.

Ideas are nothing unless someone does something with it.

Ideas need a leader. Someone who can make something out of nothing.

Where are you at the moment with your idea?

General statement not only to you but for all those who have those 'moments' where they think their idea can really be that one to make them 'rich' or a 'millionaire' but the goal is to research your idea, find out if there is a market, and take action on the idea.

    Interesting post, interesting replies.

First, you rock for doing what 99% of people don't have the guts to do: take an idea from your head to life.

Shipping is first, refinement is later. Any worth while endeavor should be accompanied by on the job calibration. So great job, and like other people said, great look.

However, like a couple of other people mentioned, this isn't really "targeted" traffic. BUT, who are we to make ourselves adept in the area of predicting the future? You can negotiate reality any way you like, if you're willing to put up with the inevitable discomfort.

Ultimately, I think it's a great idea, great approach, great initiative, and you're great for launching. Will it work? Who knows, that's your job friend! Make it the best you can. If it fails miserably after 6 months or a year, I'm sure you will have learned a Sh** - TON of information. If it does great, let us all know! Hopefully my response catalyzes another brilliant approach in your mind.

You'll probably keep struggling until you get past the idea of making an easy buck and focus on genuinely providing real value to people.

Also to make real money online requires taking serious committed action.

Ideas are a dime a dozen.

To make a real fortune only takes ONE okay idea well executed (read this as taking huge action over an extended time period).

Once you get serious about delivering real value and really putting in the effort you'll find a way to make the money almost regardless of what ideas you come up with.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh
