The Illiterati Conspiracy

Sometimes I'm amazed. Others, just amused.

So, Clickbank was doing maintenance, and people couldn't log in. We had not 1, not 2, not even 3, but 4 separate threads about it on the front page, all at the same time. And then someone else started a thread telling everyone that it was working again.

We've had at least 5 threads in the past few days on the JC Penny/Google article from the NYT. All posted in main discussion, where they don't belong.

Folks, when something big is happening, the odds are good you're not the only one to notice. Yes, tell us about it. But look to see if someone else hasn't already done so, please?

And if your post is deleted when you're delivering big news, check to see if it wasn't a duplicate before you post a complaint?

Thank you for your time. We now return you to your regularly scheduled mayhem.

    Thomas,

How's your log-in for here working?

    Chris,

Adding them to a sticky probably won't make much difference. If people don't care enough about getting the right answers to post where people hang out who can actually help them, why would they mind being the 5th person to post the same thing?

Not even 1% of the members will ever see this. It doesn't take a lot of people reminding folks for it to spread, though.

    • Maybe throw a banner into the paid banner rotator with something like "yeah we know today happened XYZ. Use the search function because at least one other person started a thread about it". Though I guess the ROI wouldn't be great

We're not. I'm sort of hoping this will help keep a few people from repeating easily avoided mistakes.

Here's a tip that might be helpful. It works in at least Firefox and Internet Explorer.

If you want to find a specific string of text on a web page, hold down the Control key and tap the letter F. A search gadget will open. Type in the text you're looking for and hit return. It will take you to the first appearance of that text in the page. You can click on "Next" to find the second and succeeding places it's used.

Makes things easier than scrolling and trying to read every thread title.

        Bill,

More than 8 years, dude. Closer to 13.

The presence of some things may not change, but the frequency can. New members will always make "new guy" mistakes. If we get enough of the more experienced members politely reminding them of why some things aren't optimal, the overall incidence of such things will drop, at least as a percentage of posts.

Yes, that does happen. You just have to have a little patience and keep reminding folks until it sticks.

I have been using Google Chrome a lot more recently, and I can confirm that the search function also works the exact same way with it.

I agree that it's getting more than a little tiresome to see duplicate threads trumpeting the same headlines/news repeatedly. Let's hope people become more conscientious when deciding to post the latest news, and spare us the incessant redundancy.

Well, this might help with literacy - amazon now sells more e-books than books. Hope they lower prices. I mean think of all the money they save on paper.

That said, I post stories and they get buried to the bottom of the sea. However, then the same exact story is posted by a power user. Well, guess what the same story gets a lot of comments from viewers.

That is not always the case.

If you construct your stories the way you are supposed to construct them, they are buried quickly.

But if you utilize "creative story telling" techniques, then you can stay on top for days.

As the thread has started to slide anyway, can everybody see the irony of the little button that points out Thomas is invisible. That is hilarious!

I wondered why the little light that is normally green was red, so hovered my cursor over it. It says "Thomas Belknap is invisible". That is about as useful as a paper bag with "Umbrella" written on it! LOL

How about a duplicate content popup for recent thread titles. Doesn't Squidoo have something like this where you try to make a new lense and the popup says "Whoa there cowboy! Looks like someone might have beaten you to the punch." Then you could add "Are you sure there isn't a recent thread created on this already?"

Is there such a thing for vBulletin?

Might slow things down more than the act of cleaning up the excess copies. That's always something to consider in a site that gets this many visitors. But it'd be an interesting thing to check out.

I agree making it a sticky probably won't help. If you give people the benefit of the doubt, we could assume they are just *so* tremendously excited about some piece of news they've just read/heard they can't possibly resist posting it up... neglecting to check or search first.

I have an idea... I've heard that certain browsers... IE, Firefox, Chrome
have some little thingy where you press a couple of keys and some kind
of search widget pops up that lets you find stuff...

    Anyone know how that works?
